I think that Harry and Ginny's make out scene in HBP is really significant because it was Harry who initiated it and he didn't even think about it. Harry's pretty reserved. There are way more times when other people hug him than when he hugs someone else. So it really shows just how strongly he feels about Ginny (9 months of UST) because he started it. Also, this is why I was annoyed the movie had Ginny take him to a secret room to make out, because it ruined the whole dynamic and chemistry.
Honey, I just…you do not understand my rage about that.
LEMME EXPLAIN MY FEELINGS THO
Consider every time Hermione threw her arms around Harry and hugged him in the books prior to HBP…his reaction was usually that he was suffocating or whatever and it is not just that he never initiated a hug with her but that he never really responded to her hugging him in the first place. Hermione was very affectionate with him (she even kisses him on the cheek in GoF because she is adorbs tbh) but he never responds to her affection. He just kind of…lets her do it and he’s like “…Ok that is v. nice. Thank.” Which is understandable because they have a very typical brother/sister relationship. Hermione is the protective older sister that is all “Omfg ur the sweetest baby brother everrr” and Harry is like “Ugh jfc people are looking”
Compare that to the way Harry behaves with Cho. On his date with her in OotP, Harry is nervous about even holding her hand. He feels like he has to just because every couple around them is doing it so he debates whether he should or not but before he can decide she moves her hand and the opportunity is gone. Then when it comes time for their kiss, she is the one who kisses him because he feels awkward about the fact that she is crying and he doesn’t know what to do. So with Hermione he is unresponsive and with Cho he is just a bundle of nerves.
But with Ginny?! omfg. Harry willingly hugs her after a Quidditch match without even thinking about it. Which is a big fucking deal that I think people overlook because Harry isn’t affectionate with others, and it most likely stems from the fact that he was abused and neglected as a child and he isn’t used to being shown affection so why would he feel comfortable showing it? But with Ginny he DOES feel comfortable. When is he like that with anyone else for no real reason? “Lemme just hug you because why not tbh” WHEN IS HARRY LIKE THAT WITH SOMEONE ELSE? PLEASE TELL ME! Then later on when Ginny runs up to him and embraces him he kisses her without even thinking about it. Everything about them as a couple is just very natural because Harry just feels comfortable around her. He doesn’t worry about how Ginny will react or whether or not he will make a fool of himself because he knows Ginny. He knows that she doesn’t take things too seriously and that they understand each other and that even if he acts like a dork they will both just laugh it off and it won’t be a big deal. Which is why I cannot stand their portrayal in the movies where every scene with Harry and Ginny is like a cringe-fest. Why the fuck are they so awkward? WHY? It is fucking canon that they are NOT. AWKWARD. AT. ALL. It is fucking canon that Harry is NOT intimidated by Ginny.
Harry and Ginny don’t worry about anything. They don’t think about kissing. They don’t ask the other to hold their hand. They just DO it. They are very attuned to each other. They can read each others minds. They have the same sense of humor. They aren’t nervous around each other. They are fucking soulmates. THEY JUST GET EACH OTHER FFS. IT IS SO CLEAR IN THE BOOKS. SO WHY THE FUCK DID THEY RUIN THAT IN THE MOVIES? LIKE WHY?!!!!!!! THEY GOT IT ALL WRONG AND I DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW OR WHY!!!!!!!
I mean ffs in HBP, Harry wasn’t even nervous about asking Ginny out! He was only nervous about Ron’s reaction to him asking Ginny out. With Cho, Harry nearly has a heart attack deciding whether or not he should hold her hand or ask her out on a date or ask her out to the ball but with Ginny he is like “Okay I gotta get her alone so I can ask her but asdfghjkl; goddammit Ron is always up my ass >.<” He doesn’t worry about whether Ginny will blow him off or if he will make a fool of himself when he asks her, which is exactly what he worried about with Cho. With Ginny, he is confident and he can take initiative because he trusts her. He knows she won’t make fun of him or think he’s stupid. He doesn’t worry about impressing Ginny like he worried about impressing Cho. Like they are just equals in that book like how else can I even express it asdfghjkl; He has complete trust in her and he knows that she has complete trust in him.
THEN by the last book, Harry’s feelings for her are so strong that he isn’t even ashamed to be affectionate with her in front of her family like he wanted to “hug or; hold on to her, he didn’t even care much that Mrs. Weasley was there” and he was totally about to until they were all interrupted and even though they had broken up, the two of them still hold hands. HARRY IS NORMALLY VERY SELF-CONSCIOUS BUT WITH GINNY HIS HEART JUST TAKES OVER. LIKE HE LOVES HER SO MUCH HE DOESN’T EVEN CARE ABOUT ONLOOKERS. HARRY JUST WANTS TO BE WITH HIS BOO OK. YOU CAN JUST DEAL.
AND THEN after his birthday kiss when Ron turns up out of the blue uninvited, Harry thinks Ginny might have even started crying but he says he couldn’t even comfort her because Ron was there looking like an angry psycho. Like Harry WANTED to comfort her, but he couldn’t. With Cho he was like “…*pats back*… *__* ” But with Ginny he is like “OMG MY BOO :(((((” AND HE WANTS TO HELP HER BUT HE COULDN’T.
THE MOVIES GOT IT SO FUCKING WRONG. CRYING FOREVER.
MY BEAUTIFUL FLAWLESS SHIP. THEY ARE SOULMATES WITH A PASSIONATE CONNECTION. THEY ARE REMARKABLE TOGETHER. THEY ARE TOTAL EQUALS. THEY ARE WORTHY OF EACH OTHER. THEY HAVE AMAZING SEX. THEY ARE FUCKING MEANT TO BE. ISN’T IT OBVIOUS?!!! BUT MOVIE-ONLY WATCHERS WILL NEVER EVER UNDERSTAND ANY OF IT BECAUSE OF THE TRASH THAT WAS IN THOSE FILMS.
