“I would’ve gotten rid of you if I’d stayed back in Boston. Besides, the only reason I’m still around and friends with you is out of pity.” Nova taunted playfully, poking out her tongue at her best friend for a moment. When Nate told her what he wanted to eat, the brunette turned her attention back to the window and ordered him the food along with a burrito with extra cheese for herself and some nachos that came with beef and cheese as well. “Our first real meal in the big city.” she commented as she made her way over to the first window where she paid for their food, then proceeding to the second one to retrieve it. Once finished, Nova handed the food over to Nate while she navigated them to the nearest motel so they could eat. It didn’t take long for the two to check in and Nova flopped herself down on the bed after she entered their room, eager to start their meal. “You mind sleeping in the same bed again until we have our own apartments?”

The smell of some sort of real food caused Nathan to smile. “Ha. Who says I wasn’t friends with you for the same reason?” He taunted back, laughing easily in her presence. Holding onto the brown bag, he peeked inside, mouth watering at the scent. “Definitely a good choice of first meal.” Once they arrived at the motel and checked in, Nathan followed Nova, entering the room and shutting the door behind himself. Shuffling over to the bed, he plopped down next to the brunette, setting the bag on the bed between their forms. “I don’t mind at all. It’s kind of nice.” He admitted, having gotten used to sleeping next to Nova on the trip to Los Angeles. The mutant grasped up his burrito, unfolding the wrapper around the warm food. Smiling widely, he gave his best friend an affectionate gaze. “To our first meal,” He then bit into the burrito hungrily, devouring a big bite within moments. Nate could only hope that they’d find everything they were hoping for in the big city. Despite leaving everything behind, he wanted to find a silver lining behind everything, give the new place a chance to be called home.

“Tomorrow.” the brunette nodded, already searching for any signs that would point them to a motel so that they could go there after grabbing some food. She took the next exit when she spotted a junk food drive through, deciding that’d be the easiest and fastest way to get something to eat for now. “Well, it’s obviously nothing like Boston. It looks more lively and troublesome, kinda like me.” Nova couldn’t help but smirk once more as she pulled up at the drive through, looking over at Nate as she did so. “So I’m sure I’ll get along fine with it. And I have a feeling Los Angeles is way bigger than Boston, which means I won’t have to live near your scrawny ass and hang out with you as much.” she teased, a devious glimmer shining in her hazel eyes before her expression turned a little bit more serious now that they were at the window and up for placing an order. “What do you wanna eat?” 

Tomorrow sounded like a good idea. He wanted to get settled into the city as quickly as he possibly could. Nathan just wanted to find a new place to call home, a new foundation to start a new life. He chuckled as both brows quirked in her direction, “You think you can get rid of me that easily?” Pressing his lips together thinly, Nate shook his head. “Even though it seems bigger, I’m still gonna be around all the time. You can’t shake me loose that easily.” The mutant warned. Glancing over the menu out the window, “A burrito sounds great,” Nathan informed her. “Make that with extra cheese? And a Dr. Pepper.” It was going to feel great to eat some real food for once. He had grown a little tired of the Pringles and Doritos.

“What, did you think I’d let you wander the world all by yourself? Someone’s gotta keep an eye on you and make sure you don’t end up lost or with the wrong people.” Nova spoke, though the smirk on her lips proved that she was just teasing him about it. Still, she didn’t want to think about what would have happened if she’d stayed in Boston and Nate had left because she’d be afraid that she’d never see him again. They’d already been inseparable before, but the brunette felt like this whole thing only brought the two of them closer together. Of course, she had no idea what Los Angeles was like, but she wasn’t scared to use her cryokinetic abilities if she needed to, if that was what would keep her and her best friend safe. “So we should stay at a motel for now, until we find apartments of our own. You want to grab some food first?” 

At Nova’s smirk, Nathan mirrored it with a happy grin of his own. It wasn’t like they would’ve separated, because if Nova had really walked out that door back in Boston, Nathan would’ve followed her. “Sounds like a plan. Maybe we can go apartment hunting tomorrow.” He suggested, nodding his head. “I think some real food would be a nice change of pace.” The fiery mutant couldn’t recall the last time they’d ate an actual meal and not munched on Doritos or snacks. “What do you think Los Angeles will have in store for us? Any predictions?” He was curious as to what she was thinking, curious as to what she hoped the outcome for living in the big city would be like for herself. Nathan figured he’d pick up another job as a bartender somewhere new, maybe pick up surfing or some other new hobby that would be fun. “I’m thinking life on the beach will be pretty sweet.”

Once they were all finished up at the store, Nova began to drive the car again and eventually arrived in Los Angeles with Nate. Los Angeles wasn’t anything like Boston and the female mutant noticed that right away when they came into the city. It was hard not to stare around at everything since it all felt so glamorous and not so quiet like Boston used to, but since Nova was pretty loud and bold by nature, this might just be the right city for her. Maybe they could get used to this place, make it their home and start a new life together - as friends, of course. She didn’t think Nate would ever want to be anything more with her anyway, so why bring it up, right? He wasn’t anything like her and she’d never be as intelligent as him, meaning that all she’d do as his girlfriend was hold him back and slow him down. And if it was anything that Nathaniel King deserved, it was to blossom and shine, which he could do just fine without her.

It seemed like forever until they reached Los Angeles. But, once they arrived there, it was like a different world all its own. The scenery, the bustling streets, the clutter of vehicles in traffic was vastly different than how things were in Boston. A ray of hope seemed to shine within Nathan, even on his face as he peered out the window at the endless sea of buildings and streets. “I can’t believe we made it,” He breathed out, turning his face to meet Nova’s. Emerald eyes shone with excitement, because even though he left everything he ever knew behind, maybe a fresh start somewhere new was just what they both needed. “Thank you, Nova. For doing this with me.” He felt as if he should thank her because back in Boston she could have walked right out that door and continued to fight for what she believed was right. Instead, she took a leap of faith, took a chance on him and Los Angeles. The city limits were sealed off by large concrete walls and he wondered if that was to keep mutants that were going viral out.

“You know that never works on me, right? I know you way too well. Maybe even better than I know myself.” Nova found that easier because her own personality was so complex that it sometimes confused her. But Nate was more simple, it didn’t take a whole lot for her to figure him out, but maybe that was also because she wasn’t him. Lowering her hand from his shoulder after another moment, the brunette pushed some hair behind her ear while listening to what he said. “You can’t constantly worry about the what ifs, Nate. You said we had to leave, so we did. Whatever comes next, we’ll just have to face it, one way or another. No matter what. I mean, what other choice do we have? We can’t spend our whole lives being on the run, going from one place to another and never making anything our home. I won’t do that.” she commented softly, a small breath passing through her lips as she paused for a moment. “I left Boston for you, I left my entire life behind for you. You know I’d do anything for you, that I’d follow you to the end of the world if I had to. I need you to do this with me, so don’t back out on me now.”

While Nova spoke, Nathan knew she had a point. There was no way they could always run from the problems they may face in the future, no matter what the problem itself was. As great as it sounded to run, at some point, they’d need to stand and fight for what they wanted, fight to live. His lips pressed thinly, edges curving into a small frown when she mentioned that she left Boston for him, left her entire life behind for him. “I’m not backing out. I’m not.” Shaking his head slightly, his eyes remained linked to Nova’s. “You’ve got me. We’re in this together, right? Like we’ve been through everything else. We’re gonna take this on together. I’m not about to abandon you.” And with one last longing look in her hazel hues, Nathan paced down the next aisle, grasping a bag of cheddar popcorn, tossing it into the cart. “I don’t want to run forever either. I want us to enjoy our lives, like we used to.” Even if worry did consume him, he wasn’t about to let it ruin his life forever. There had to be something better out there in Los Angeles than Boston, right?

“Just stuff that’s convenient and easy.” Nova responded, picking up on the look on Nate’s face as she dropped three bags of Doritos in the cart along with the Pringles and chocolate milk. “What’s up?” the brunette questioned, slowly laying a hand on her best friend’s shoulder, hoping that would be of some comfort to him. Sure, she was known to be distant when it came to mushiness and those kinds of emotions, but she wasn’t void of them and actually did care - especially about Nathan. The expression on his face was worrying her at the moment and she didn’t always want him to be the one who comforted her. She wanted to give back as much as she got too since her best friend deserved it. “You look worried. You have a something’s up face.”

“I do not.” Nathan tried, shaking his head while his hand remained on the back of his neck. There was no fooling Nova though, he knew he couldn’t lie his way out of anything when it came to her. She read him like an open book. “I’m just worried that we might run into trouble on the way to Los Angeles. I want to make sure we stock up on everything we need, so we don’t have to make too many pit stops.” Explaining himself, he allowed his hand to fall limply at his side. “I mean, what if there are other cities like Boston? Overwhelmed by mutants?” His voice got quiet so that nobody passing by would hear the conversation, in fear that they’d be terrified if they knew Nova and Nathan were mutants themselves. Sometimes in a new place, it was hard to gauge how humans reacted to mutants.

“I was planning on it. I mean, as much as I’m used to wearing your clothes, I kinda just want my own stuff now that I’ve had to leave what I had behind.” she commented, a couple of more outfits following and eventually, Nova had a decent amount of clothes. The brunette decided to keep wearing the last outfit so that she wasn’t walking around in Nate’s clothes all day, making her way over to the supermarket once she was all set. The mutant roamed around the store, starting to fill up the shopping cart with things that were convenient and easy to have on the road, not wanting them to go hungry anytime soon. “We should stock up on as much food as we can. I’ll get some beef jerky and Doritos. You like Pringles too, right? Chocolate milk?”

After making his own purchases, he carried the heavy bag out of the store, then proceeding to the next with Nova. As they strolled through the market, he grasped a few bags of Cheetos, piling them into the cart. “Pringles, yes. Especially the sour cream ones.” Nathan answered, nodding his head. “Definitely chocolate milk.” Although, they’d have to buy a small portion of it or the milk would spoil in the car. As they rounded a corner towards the fresh deli, he grabbed a couple of sandwiches that were just made, placing them into the cart as well. “What else do you think we’re gonna need?” He wondered, curious as to what her response was. He leaned against the cart for a moment, running a hand over the back of his neck. “Besides water, obviously. We gotta stock up on that.” Luckily, the supermarket hadn’t been ransacked for supplies yet since the surrounding city was in no immediate danger. He was certain there’d be other parts of the country falling apart though and some supplies would probably be harder to get in those parts; water being one of them.

Luckily, there was a mall already in sight, so Nova didn’t have to search for places to shop at for food and clothes. Once she reached the parking lot and found a spot to park in, the brunette killed the engine and climbed out of the car after unbuckling her seat belt. “Come on, sweat pants stud, we’re going shopping.” Nova teased, locking the car back up and heading towards the mall where she searched for a clothing store that actually looked appealing to her. Shopping actually distracted her and took her mind off of the terrible things that had happened in such a short amount of time, collecting pieces that she liked before moving towards the changing room and pulling a black tank top over her head along with a denim jacket that came with matching jeans. Chocolate colored strands were flipped over the collar as the mutant smoothed the fabric out and looked herself over in the mirror, then presented herself to her best friend. Despite her outfit being simple and casual, she really liked it. “What do you think?” 

As the mall came into view, Nathan prepared himself for the shopping spree they were about to go on. He laughed heartily when she called him a sweat pants stud. “I think you’re the only person who’d ever call me that.” And after undoing his seat belt, he rose from the vehicle, shutting the door behind himself. The male followed his best friend around the mall until they came upon a suitable store that fit her style. When she exited the changing room, presenting herself to him, Nathan felt almost speechless. The way her chocolate tresses spilled over her shoulders and the way the outfit complimented her curves hadn’t gone unnoticed to Nate. He stammered a moment, clearing his throat quickly. “You look gorgeous, Nova.” The guy had been picking up some clothes off the racks to try and find something suitable for himself but his best friend’s appearance caused a slight flush of his face. “I think you should definitely go for that one.”

Nova wasn’t normally called wonderful or hilarious - usually just bold and even bitchy most of the time. She smiled softly at those words though, which was a rare kind of smile. One that the brunette didn’t show many people, only those who she trusted and felt comfortable enough to do so with and Nate was definitely ranking number one there. When she woke up this morning and felt his arm around her, that only became more evident than it already had been before. “Well, you’re the only one saying that.” she mumbled quietly, though she meant every single word. Her smile had vanished at that point and she let a couple of moments pass by before her hazel hues fell in line with Nate’s once more, another genuine smile crossing her lips. “But that’s all that matters to me anyway.” Nova spoke, eyes moving back towards the road ahead as they were about to pass by another big city and she figured they could make a stop. “We should take the next exit to buy me some clothes and stock up on food.”

“I’d gladly always be the only one saying those things.” Nathan responded, allowing himself to sink into the seat a little further. He didn’t want to remain uptight or horrified by the events happening around the country. The guy just wanted to live his life as best to his ability as he could. The male smiled to himself when Nova mentioned that it mattered to her, that it was all that mattered. It was nice to feel like they were on the same page, that their friendship was deeply rooted in loyalty and perhaps even love for one another. “Sounds like a plan. I don’t want to be wearing sweat pants the entire time.” He joked lightly, knowing he hadn’t really packed anything else to wear. And stocking up on food would’ve been important for the long journey ahead. Especially water, that was a definite necessity. Once a new city came into sight and they had gotten off the highway, Nathan felt a wave of relief wash over himself. It was almost as if the rest of the world had melted away.

“No, but you know I love hearing you giving me compliments.” Nova smirked, keeping her hands firmly on the wheel as her eyes remained on the road ahead. Nate seemed a little scared when he mentioned them having been through worse - she knew him well enough to know that he was afraid of this whole situation, of what would happen to them now that they were basically runaways. “My family’s never gonna want me.” the brunette mumbled, hazel hues still on the road and attempting to show no emotion as she spoke the words or even thought about them. She’d accepted the fact that her family didn’t want her a long time ago, so this was nothing new to her anyway. And because of her family not wanting her, the mutant automatically assumed that nobody did or ever would. She was alone in life, but that was fine with her because caring about and loving someone only made things difficult - this was easier.

“I know you do.” Nathan bantered back, feeling more at ease in the seat than he had the previous night. Despite leaving everyone and everything behind, there was a sense of peace as the car pressed onward, since no crazy mutants were attacking this part of the state yet. It was weird how strange it felt to know that Boston was chaotic and the rest of the state was still peaceful. “Trust me, Nova, they’ve missed out on someone who’s as wonderful as she is hilarious.” Pausing, he stared at her while she drove, eyes lingering on the other mutant a while longer than he’d realized. “You’re easily one of the best people I’ve ever known. And I’m not just saying that.” While he was being mushy again, he just wanted her to understand how much her friendship meant to him, how much she meant to him. Nathan would’ve given his life for Nova if he had to. There was no doubt in the back of his mind.

Once they were checked out of the motel, Nova headed right to the car and started the engine once she was seated and had buckled her seat belt. A small breath passed through her lips as she pulled out of the parking lot of the motel, the sound of the radio soon filling the moving vehicle. “We’ll make it. If Los Angeles is a sanctuary for mutants like you say it is, we’ll sure as hell get there.” Nova commented, her voice dripping with nothing but determination and that was exactly how she was feeling right now. If her eyes could be set ablaze with it, then that was what they’d be doing in this moment. The brunette wanted to make it to the city because it was bad enough she’d been chased out of another just yesterday and there was no way that she’d  travel endlessly because there was no place for her. If she had a chance at finding a new home, then she’d surely take it and maybe Los Angeles wasn’t all that bad. It would in no way be anything like Boston, she knew that, but maybe a change was good for them. 

The determination behind Nova’s eyes, behind her words, hadn’t gone lost on Nathan. He was also just as determined, despite almost feeling spent from exhaustion. Yeah, he’d slept decently but his mind was still reeling. Relaxing against the seat in the car, he waited for them to pull away before he spoke. “Did I mention that I’m glad you’re my best friend? That I’m thankful you’re here with me?” He knew he couldn’t do any of this without Nova at his side. There was no way in hell he’d ever survive on his own, let alone without the woman. Being as inseparable as they had been, they’d gotten through rougher times together. At least, that’s what Nate wanted to believe. “We’ve been through worse, right?” He asked suddenly, eyes spilling over to meet hers briefly. “I mean, neither of our families want us around. That was pretty rough.” Nathan added after a brief pause.

The brunette listened to his every word, knowing that it was a lot of news in only a couple of seconds that she had to process. Nova had never minded the fact that she was different, that she was someone with powers. But she knew that not all mutants were good and that humans often treated all of them differently, bad or not. That was what made most mutants feel like freaks in this world, because people who had no powers treated them like they were from another planet, like they didn’t belong anywhere. But if Los Angeles was a sanctuary, then that was where she wanted to go with Nate because Boston sure as hell wasn’t an option anymore at this point. “Let’s go.” she was more than ready to leave the motel and head down to Los Angeles since she’d never been there, but it was a place that Nova had always wanted to go. “I’m in the mood for pancakes and waffles, so we’ll eat once we pass by a diner on the road.”

At her prompt, Nathan zipped his bag once the clothes returned to its pocket. Exiting the motel room, he swung open the door and held it for Nova, allowing her to follow. “Pancakes and waffles sounds amazing right about now.” There was a small ache in his heart, knowing he’d miss Bobby’s and the breakfast they offered at that little diner. Strolling to the office of the motel, he returned the key to the room to the receptionist and then made his way to Nova’s car. It was painful, knowing that just the other night he was serving drinks to the regulars as a bartender, sharing drinks with humans and mutants alike. And now? It felt like a completely different world, creating such a great divide between both parties. Climbing into the passenger’s seat, Nate shoved the duffel bag on the floor near his feet. “I’m just hoping we get there safely. It’s a long road from here to Los Angeles.”

After Nova had finished her shower, she gathered Nate’s clothes that she’d been wearing and couldn’t help but pick up on his scent that lingered against the fabric. It seemed like no matter how much or how long she wore his clothes, his scent would always be glued to them, but that was a thing she actually liked about it. The sound that came from the other room came from the television and it only took a moment for the mutant to notice the terrified expression on her best friend’s face, which in turn prompted her to give him a bewildered look as her eyebrows came together too. She didn’t know what he’d just watched, but Nova had a gut feeling and it wasn’t often that she saw Nate like this - which worried her. “Nate, what is it?” 

“It’s happening in other places,” He explained, promptly shutting off the television with a click of the remote. “Other mutants... they’re just... attacking people.” None of it made sense still, and he figured it probably never would. Running a hand down his face, he heaved out a large breath. “But, there’s hope, Nova.” He let his best friend in on the good news. “They’re saying that Los Angeles is safe. It’s safe for people like us.” It sparked some form of happiness in Nate, knowing that there were other mutants who weren’t causing mayhem, that there was a safe haven for them. “I think maybe we should go there. It might be our best bet.” He concluded, eyes looking to Nova with hope gleaming behind them. As much as it pained him to leave everything he knew behind, maybe this was a good thing. Maybe there was a silver lining and something better would be awaiting the both of them once they reached Los Angeles.

Upon hearing his voice, Nova’s eyes opened up and connected with Nate’s. She didn’t want to move just yet and she also wished that they weren’t on the run, that their lives hadn’t been turned upside down and completely crazy. As much as that was wishful thinking, it wasn’t reality and the brunette knew that they had to get moving soon again - despite them not even knowing where they were headed. “Yeah.” she nodded before pushing herself up and off the bed, heading to the bathroom door. Nova knew fully well that they were just winging this whole situation, but truth be told, the two of them weren’t handling it all that horribly. “I’m gonna go take a shower and then we can and head out. We can grab some breakfast on the road.” 

It was hard not to get lost in her eyes for a moment and he swallowed a small lump down his throat. Nodding his head, he watched as Nova rose from where she laid and off the bed. “Sounds good to me. I’ll see what’s on the news.” Nathan stated, pushing himself up into a sitting position on the bed. Reaching for the remote, he turned on the small television in the room, allowing the volume to climb so he could hear it better over the shower. Standing from the mattress, he paced over to his bag, grasped up some clothes and while she was busy bathing, he changed his own clothes, needing something fresh. As he pulled his new shirt over his head, emerald eyes remained glued to the screen, the news showing that in other parts of the country there were other outbreaks, mutants attacking humans and problems just like that in Boston were arising. He watched in horror as some of the clips or pictures on the screen caused him to shudder. Before he was about to turn it off, there was a woman speaking to a reporter, telling mutants that were fleeing these places to try to make it to Los Angeles, as it was secured off and safe. Nathan pondered a moment, considering that might be the best place for them to go.
