Badass Ladies You Should Know: Illustrator Simini Blocker

If you’ve spent any time on Tumblr or in the YA world, you’ve seen the work of Simini Blocker. She’s done commissions for great titles like Jessica Spotswood’s A Tyranny of Petticoats, Julie Murphy’s Dumplin’, and Alison Cherry’s Red. Her illustrations of Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor and Park were included in a special edition of the book, and she’s done magazine illustrations, her own comics, artistic interpretations of literary quotes for Goodreads newsletters, and even adorable family portraits.

Simini’s style is easily recognizable, but I wanted to find out more about the badass lady behind it, and now I’m happy to share her badassery with you.

Welcome to 52*ish

True Confession: As of May 8th, 2016, I’m 8 books behind to make my initial January 1 goal.. because(!) I have a wedding in less than 40 days, sooo… it’s allowed (?).

The news isn’t all bad, however, being said 8 books behind has inspired me to create this real, accountable and actionable, aspect to my reading list to help me make the most of this ultra-important undertaking: completing 52*ish* books in the next 52 weeks.

A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay, 2015

TL; DR: When a young girl’s 14-year-old sister Marjorie becomes plagued by a quick and mysterious mental illness it will be up to Merry and her family to uncover, and survive, the nature of a horrifying and haunting beast.

Conflict: Man vs. Man, Man vs. Nature, Man vs. Himself

Music: Creep— Radiohead

Entertainment: 3.5 (out of 4)

The story is the best fun-kind-of-scary. I had to be careful about how late I was reading it because I was having wicked vivid dreams about similar happenings of the book.

Intrigue: 4

HFOG is a page turner; I consistently found my internal dialogue bemoaning just a few more pages.

Readability: 4

I finished HFOG in less than a work week; just about one day for each of the 3 parts, it was both gripping and easy to get through.

Fierce Female Status: 3

Eight-year-old Merry, both in her backstory and current-day portrayal, were considerably admirable to her strength and courageousness; Marjorie’s sickness is met mostly with sensitivity, but the theme of exploitation of her fragility is a major touchstone of the book. Tremblay handled the juxtaposition of a 'crazy vs. mentally ill’ stigma within the confines of the questions the book solicits satisfactorily through out.

Editor’s Notes: There are definitely some allusions and nuances that I missed that I want to get back to, particularly the themes of rain, umbrellas, wetness, etc. As a possession story, the clear answer would be reconciliation and rebirth, but there’s definitely more to it.

Ultimate Reco Score: 3.5 out of 4.
