The thing about Shion fans is that we truly understand the freak that he is. He's always been kind of unstable and held together only by strong bonds built with a select few people. Without those bonds or worse, with those he holds dear in danger he will always be the most dangerous person in the room because the darkness lurking beneath his nice facade is a level of apathy and anger that seeped into him from living in an unjust society and being smart enough to notice it but until he helped take things down with Nezumi unable to address it. We saw glimpses of that unbridled anger and resentment towards a system that threatened take everything, that DID take something precious from him (his best friend Safu who he loved but never in the way she wanted). And not to mention that despite this darkness he feels a profound guilt and responsibility for it not just because Nezumi gave him the "assignment" as an emotionally repressed teenager, bitter and angry at the world but also because he recognizes what happens if you don't stay and help rebuild and shape things from there. He feels like he needs to be punished for being alive and that Nezumi leaving was a punishment in of itself for not being good enough and not making things good enough for him. He's running himself in the ground because he thinks he deserves to be in the ground to a degree and the only thing that makes him push past that is having Nezumi there but also he's so toxic for that and he knows that so if Nezumi really told him fuck off no he would but then I also think that he would be a husk of himself until he eventually took himself out from being careless about himself.

Also he's really horny and a freak that for sure would chill out a bit if he had freaky nasty sex with Nezumi and was super possessive about it but that's only part of it.

Both shion and nezumi grew up in highly individualist societies but that is a trait nezumi kept with him and shion dropped which is why shion works himself into the ground for the sake of everyone else and nezumi focuses not on the wellbeing of No 6 and its citizens but JUST shion shion is his priority shion is the individual on his mind which is why he thinks the correct choice is to take Shion away from the city if you even careeeeee

I've been reading the BL/horror manga The Summer Hikaru Died/Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu, and I was really happy to come across this unexpected reference to Gon and Killua's relationship! The fact that this is a BL series and the larger context of this mention make it an especially nice reference IMHO.

The manga itself is super interesting--I definitely recommend it!

(This was in Chapter 16. However, I don't recommend trying to find this scene if you're interested at all in reading it, it's a pretty spoilery scene...)

I wanted to add that I had the honor of meeting Mokumokuren (the creator of The Summer Hikaru Died) this weekend at Anime Expo twice, getting autographs. The second time, I said that it made me happy they referenced Hunter x Hunter with Master + Master because I love HxH (and I showed them my Gon/Killua itabag), and they said they also love HxH. Nice to have it confirmed personally even though the reference is obvious.
