Sora had taken the keyblade once before. It had been mostly as a joke, as he snatched it and waved it about experimentally. But when the blade shook and yanked right out of her grip, Kairi was stunned speechless, before she voiced her confusion. The wooden toy clattered against the wet cobblestone, and the girl took a step back, as though it were going to burn her. She was already gifted with lovely large eyes, but this time they were wide in shock as she peered back up to her best friend. She had told him once, that we was on the wrong side. Almost begged him to come back. That he was stupid for trusting the darkness, and that he would cause trouble and get hurt.
So he was supposed to be the hero all along. The sound of footsteps shook her out of her stupor, and she cast her confusion on the companions flanking her side. Or, were leaving her side. "Donald?" She reached out pleadingly, before she stopped herself. "Goofy?"
The Dog and Duck paused their trek to peer back to the girl. The guilt was clearly animated on their faces, though Donald looked away abruptly, and Goofy bowed his head. "Sorry Kairi. But we're supposed'ta follow the key."
She might have gasped, but no sound emerged. The time back in Traverse town came belatedly, and only then did she remember the deal she had struck with the pair. She had forgotten, because somewhere between that fateful moment they had brought their hands together, there had been arguments, and laughter, and despair, and hope, creating memories of companionship had brought them closer than a single goal or mission.
Or at least, she had thought. "...Oh." she murmured listlessly, and lowered her hand. She bowed her head to hide the light fading from her eyes. "Right."
The dog watched her, the worry pinching his brow. He lifted his hand, almost mimicking-
"Goofy," Donald quacked. "We gotta go!"
The knight winced and dropped his hand before turning back. And so they left. The childhood friend that had her heart, and the friends that she had come to call her own. And watching Sora swagger away, keyblade resting on his shoulder with the two companions flanking his side, Kairi could not help but feel it fit him. He was the perfect image of the hero. Not her.
And when he was finally gone, she looked at the wood sword. The toy of summer days, and childhood fights, and play and fun.
She collapsed to her knees, feeling her heart break in two.
Come on, Kairi. Giving up already?
For a moment, she thought a certain boy was standing clear before her. But she shut her eyes, shaking off the vision. She knew it wasn't real. Whatever strange dream kept coming back to haunt her was just digging in the cruelty of reality. If Riku were in her place, she would bet anything he'd beat some sense into Sora. He could probably stand up to him. Not her.
Kairi had almost forgotten about the one she had saved. The once silent beast heaved his weary, heavy, self past her. He trudged up the cobblestone and Kairi's bout of self pity fizzled out at the sight. Was he really planning on trying to make it on his own?
"Wait-" She called out worriedly.
As though it had reminded him, he collapsed, and Kairi shoved herself up to run to him. She put a cautious hand on his shoulder. "You're still hurt. You shouldn't push yourself like this."
"I have.. to find Belle." the beast panted. "I came... to find her." He didn't even look at her as he pushed himself to stand. "And I won't leave without her. Even if I'm on my own."
A strange sort of awe came over her, as she looked at the hideous beast that was willing to sacrifice so much, to find someone so important to him. She looked back at the sword. Though her heart still ached, a part of her resolution returned, and she reached out to take it. "You're right. I'm not giving up either." She pushed herself up to her feet, and pointed the sword skyward. A flash of healing green light encompassed the beast, and he instantly straightened, looking back to her with surprised blue eyes. She released the breath she had been holding in relief as the familiar magic coursed through her. At least that hadn't left with the keyblade. That part was hers, and hers alone. She smiled at him. "I came to find someone important to me too. So let's find them. Together."
In the maze of waterfalls, and dungeons and magic, Kairi had become very fond of the beast. Though he seemed rough and crude on the surface, he was valiant, and loyal. Though she still had her magic, the battles were still difficult without the magical weapon she had come to rely on. He saved her on more than one occasion.
When they finally emerged into the entrance room of Hallow Bastion's castle, both fighters could feel the unusual amount of darkness surrounding them.
"Be on your guard," the beast growled. "They're close. I can feel them. Are you ready for them?"
She nodded once, and took the first steps forward. Until the heartless played their cruel trick, and baited the beast with his rage right out of the room. "Beast!" But the doors slammed shut with finality. She whirled in anger, eyes instantly landing on the one she knew was responsible. "Sora!"
