Street Fighter

At the game store with my Korean wife. She sees street fighter and tells me this story of how as a little girl she would sit outside of the store on a little stool and play as chun-li. “Choon-li!” she said, excitedly.

I don’t even like... really play Street Fighter, but I said “sure that’s fine, let’s get it.”

An hour later after I win exactly one match out of like 15 she starts screaming in a rage “THIS IS BULLSHIT WHAT THE HELL YOU SHOULDNT HAVE BLOCKED THAT FUCK THIS GAME FUCK YOU”

HISTORY TUMBLR, PLEASE HELP.

I am writing a novel, set in present day England, (I’m English, I do not need britpickers), and there is going to be a fair amount of old OLD English, old Gaelic etc in it.

The help I need is language resources and possibly minds to pick!

I currently use an online dictionary (the Old English Dictionary) but as it goes, I don’t trust everything on the internet and so I need to know if I’m using it right. I also need to know I’m not butchering things badly enough for anyone who knows even the smallest amount about it to laugh my novel out of publication.

Extra help and resources for things like architecture and church buildings in particular from the 13th to 15th century would also be HIGHLY APPRECIATED.

If you can’t help in particular, could you point me in the right direction to research myself, or to anyone who could possibly help?

Which is: ever noticed how all art about “the evils of the modern world” focuses on smartphones and fat people?

I’d be the first to speak up and say there are plenty of things wrong with modern industrialized society. Like, oh, I don’t know, climate change. Cops murdering with impunity. Species going extinct. The way the US government has practically been taken hostage by corporate interests. An emphasis on throwing away and replacing rather than repairing. Schools teaching to the test and crushing creative thinking. Mass unemployment and poverty. Fox “News”.

I can think of ten dozen more, and smartphones and fat people aren’t even close to making the list. If we lived in a world where our biggest “problems” were people being fat and people having computers in their pockets, we’d be in damn near utopia.

So why do so-called “cutting-edge”, “countercultural” artists insist on repeating those two images over and over again?
