IN STUDIO - TASK 05

First proposition photomontage. This proposes the experience of the non-human, through the idea of isolation. By foregrounding the non-humans of my proposal I was able to communicate effectively the feelings and experience of the dock as well as how isolation may be comprehended as a non-human. “Revealing the invisible” was achieved via the smoke. The concept that what we see is the same as that of non-humans is a myth. Proven by many biological and environmental scientists. Thus the smoke is a way of perceiving what may be there but not seen. The main focus going forward, will be on the concept of what isolation is. The sight of the dock and the human influence (the hooks) needs a bit more work to understand their role in this proposition, this will be worked on in future work.

....hmmmm, the smoke is a very interesting idea (especially the way you are describing it here) - but does it literally have to be ‘smoke’?.....what are the QUALITIES of smoke you can use in architectural sense? fine dispersed material, floating in a bigger space / camoflaging & dynamic / always disappearing.......MANY intriguing ways to interpret this.......

really good to see how your thinking is developing with & in response to the model making......remember you can also zoom in to create quick models to test out a detail - like how would the ‘scrunchy’ bit actually work at a bigger scale?

Attempt #1 at sections.

While doing these sections it brought up a lot of questions that I hadn’t already thought of. What materials would work for this idea? How can I design it so the cormorant’s nests stay still and protected while the rest of the structure moves and changes at certain times? What are these certain times? What determines/controls when and how the shape changes? Where do all the clients fit in and how do they share the space? Is it a long time or a split second in which they do share it? How do I ensure this floating object stays in the dock? It primarily had to clean up the oil from the corners of the dock, where wind and rain pushes it, so does it need to be attached to the dock or have some sort of barrier stopping it from disturbing the workings of the dock?

These are all things I need to analyse and figure out in order for my design to work. As suggested, a diagrammatic storyboard is the next stage in exploring these questions, and atmospheric photomontages.

these are all excellent questions, and while confronting at first they will help you transform your design process as you attempt to resolve each one of them....every time you get one element working, you will realise this affects another one, and so the complexity of your system & its interactions will increase....this means you’re making progress!

what’s interesting about this as well is how the water line becomes the base condition - as opposed to how we normally build ON GROUND, this is using the WATER SURFACE itself as the starting point.....lots here for many of you to think about.....what happens if we flip the world to start at the water surface???

Came across bio-semiotician Jakob von Uexküll and his interesting concept of ‘Umwelt’ - the surrounding world of a subject, as perceived through its own senses. These images show how a sea urchin’s umwelt might look to itself and how a bumble bee’s might. 

Fleshing out this pretty bio-philosophical idea to more than just visual and physical sense-based perception and interpretation, my world around me would be different to yours, and different to a cat’s, and different to a tree’s etc. even if we all lived in the same place and experienced the same physical conditions. Are we essentially all living in separate worlds which just overlap here and there? Emotional and intellectual perception and translation would have just as much bearing on what each being’s umwelt is as physical characteristics. 

Now to try to imagine my lobster pot’s umwelt and what it would like to change in it, with this non-human architecture…

More helpful insight into the psychological and social implications of interactive architecture.

It explains how there is a dialogue, language, and communication held between this interactive arch and the user. This communication must be simple enough for someone or something to learn to use. On the other hand, in contrast to this voluntary control, users may be coerced into participating and interacting with the architecture/other users.

This heightened communication and relationship leads to increased attachment to the space. It can determine/change how an animal feels, behaves and reacts.

Why are sea otters so important?

Sea otters are what’s known as a keystone species: their foraging and feeding behaviors have a major effect on the health of their ecosystem. 

In Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, sea otters often spend their time in kelp forests, where they feed on invertebrates like sea urchins. Without the sea otters, sea urchin populations can get out of control – and since sea urchins eat kelp, that can spell trouble for the kelp forest ecosystem.

Off the coast of Washington state, sea otters were hunted to local extinction by the early 1900s. But in 1969 and 1970, a few dozen were reintroduced.

Since then, the sea otter population on the outer coast of Washington has grown to approximately 1,600 animals! 

Researchers in Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary and NOAA Fisheries’ Northwest Fisheries Science Center are now working to assess how this adorable species’ recovery has affected the nearshore ecosystem.

CLEANER WRASSE CAN RECOGNIZE ITSELF IN A MIRROR, BUT IS THIS ENOUGH? 

The cleaner wrasse (Labroides dimidiatus) is a small fish, averaging 10 cm long, and has become the first fish ever to pass the mirror test, a behavioural technique to determine whether a non-human animal possesses the ability of visual self-recognition.

Until now, only charismatic mammals and birds have passed the test, also in 2016, two captive manta rays were filmed checking out their reflections in a mirror, suggesting self recognition in fishes.  

The mirror test is bassically a mirror with a dot or a mark, researchers can observe if the animal investigates or interacts with the mark on its own body. Passing the mirror test suggests an animal understands of that the marked reflection is a representation of its own marked body, and not just another member of its species. But, is the mirror test enough to find self-awareness in this small fish?

Self-awareness involves having a working knowledge of your own mental states, like thoughts and emotions, along with an understanding of how you physically appear; self-recognition, in contrast, is limited to knowing the latter. It’s unclear how much self-recognition implies self-awareness and more studies are needed in order to find more prove of cognitive abilities in animals.
