people say folks with adhd struggle with "delayed rewards" aka long term goals and as such we tend to focus more on short term rewards. what they don't talk about is that at when we Do accomplish long term goals we don't actually feel anything proportionate to the amount of work we did to achieve it. In my head I suffered for a while and then money spontaneously appeared in my bank account.

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is more about how The Trojan War was the end of an age of enlightenment and good will between peoples. This is honestly something that cuts deep right now seeing how our own age of free and safe trade, travel, and negotiation is ending. It doesn't have to be historically accurate or even accurate to the legend.

*spoilers ahead!*

A lot of people here on Tumblr are hyper fixated on some very silly things about Christopher Nolan's adaptation of The Odyssey. Especially things like Odysseus not telling Polyphemus he was "Nobody" or how Menelaus made a crude comment to Hellen when he's meant to be "a wife guy". I find these criticisms very hollow given the actual themes of the film and the legend itself.

This films is meant to be about Odysseus regrets for his Trojan horse and the horrors he saw as a result. This is actually an important part of the legend. The crimes done to the people of Troy. How warriors on either side are not innocent, and must accept what they've done if they are to make amends.

This theme carries through the film. Circe turns Odysseus's men into pigs in part because she feared what a group of armed men might do to her, and Odysseus letting her live because he understands that. The constant mentions of Zeus' law of hospitality and The Sea People who do not respect it are also a part of that. These themes clearly parallel the way the modern West (The US and Europe) has refused to respect our own international laws.

The legends of ancient Greece (really everywhere) were told and retold to reflect the issues and values of the people telling them at the time. We will never even know the original oral tradition as it is almost certainly vastly different from the one we have written down. This one tells of our own coming dark age well. We (that is the US) broke Zeus' law of hospitality and so the world will likely pay for our mistake. However, we don't have to lose hope going into a darker world. We can still light a fire and honor those we could not bury.

MYTHS ARE MEANT TO BE ADAPTED

Ancient myths were told by travelling bard. They were sung to please an audience. To praise a king, to teach children lessons, to entertain the people of the time.

The ancient versions were not written for us. They do not match up to our societal expectations. They do not teach lessons that we consider useful. They tell tall tales rather than histories.

Which is why adaptations very much can and should change things.

It's not a book from a few years ago that they're remaking into a new medium. It's an ancient and well-known story that they're recrafting for a new audience.

Medusa is the perfect example. The original story is a warning of the dangers of messing with gods (The even earlier original has her born a monster with no backstory at all). Today we switch the perspective of the narrative, and she is a victim of higher powers treating her as an object, as many women are today.

It is for the same reason that while in the original Odyssey Odysseus spends a year with Circe and has 2 children with her, in almost any modern adaptation he refuses her advances. Because Odysseus and Penelope's loyalty to each other is a consistent theme of the story, so we adapt it to fit our definition of loyalty.

These myths are meant to be passed down, shared and changed for a new audience to enjoy and learn from.

So while Percy Jackson, Epic the Musical, The Odyssey (2026), even Troy (2004), are not perfectly accurate to the original stories, they are adaptations. They are valid as what they are - new versions of old tales. Repeated time and time again, different but the same. Teaching the same core, human lessons while not losing sight of the audience they are aimed at.

What's killing me about the discourse around Nolan's Odyssey as an adaptation of Homer's work is. That yes it's an adaptation but the movie's goal is not to-- Retell the most researched well documented most accurate version of Homer's Odyssey with all greek actors and all the right kind of- NO It's a movie against war first. It is a beautiful, meaningful movie about the horrors of war, about living in a crisis. This movie is about the world we are living in now, it's using this story told for millennia using it to show us that we are still in this. How can you not see that? how can you nitpick this movie on what it's NOT about? When it's such a powerful statement? When the world feels like it's falling apart in front of our eyes and this movie comes out, and it's about everything we're suffering through, about veterans about the people in Gaza about this ideal of Zeus's law and instead of seeing that it's being criticized for what?? Tom Holland??

I actually really like your fanfictions some of the best in the Maze Runnr fandom but it’s so frustrating having to wait so long between updates. I can understand a wait few days but it’s a month or two in every update that’s just too much and that’s sad how you lose loyal readers and fans like me.

I'm sorry you feel that way. I understand that long waits between chapters can be frustrating.

That said, I'm a writer, not a content creator. I write nearly every day—far more than I ever post—but I write because I love the craft. I love language, I love storytelling, and I love these characters. I only share a chapter when I feel it's ready and worthy of being shared.

Of course I'm grateful when people enjoy my work. I love feedback, discussions, and seeing readers connect with my stories. But those things aren't my primary motivation for writing. I write because I want to tell these stories well, not because I want to maintain a posting schedule.

I'm not asking anyone to wait if that's not something they want to do. If the update pace means my stories aren't for you, I genuinely understand, and I wish you all the best. If you'd rather read completed works, ao3 also lets you filter for finished fics...
