I’ve only recently discovered demisexuality and immediately felt like i belonged under that description. As soon as I read the first descriptions on google, I started sweating and my heart was racing over the fact that I had finally put a word on that feeling I had been shrugging off for years. Needless to say it was a relief. 

I’ve told my three best friends and my boyfriend as of now. This post is about the reaction of one those best friends (whom I don’t consider a best friend as much as used to).

I’d already told one of my best friends and my boyfriend when I got to her about it. I didn’t feel like dragging the subject out of thin air so whenever I felt like the subject was relevant to the conversation with any of those I’ve told, I’ve used that opportunity to come out. This friend (let’s call her Lizzy) was talking about the guy she was seeing at that moment and, as she does each time, she showed me a picture of him companied with the usual “Ok, now don’t tell me he’s not sexy as fuck!” or something like that. I used this to explain to her that I couldn’t grasp this because I was demi. I explained a little more about what that is, but before I could elaborate, she shrugged it off  and said something like “Ok I get it” and gone back to talking about that guy. Now, I didn’t mind talking about the guy she was dating, but she had been rambling on about him for what seemed like a fucking decade without me being about to place a goddamn word. I understood she didn’t quite grasped the importance of this “coming out” in my life, but I guess I expected a bit more interest from someone I called a best friend into what I was saying, especially about something as important as sexual orientation. 

So I guess this is to anyone who has this kind of relationship with someone. I’m sure this person doesn’t intend to make you feel this way, but this behaviour is demeaning and unhealthy for you. What I’ve chosen to do is to distance myself from that person and I encourage you to do the same. Completely cutting someone off from your life can be hard, but some times necessary. In this case, I didn’t feel it necessary, but I still feel it is important to realize that this kind of behaviour is undeniably unacceptable in a healthy friendship. Don’t be blind to it and don’t let yourself forget about your feelings for someone who couldn’t care less. 

And to someone who’s behaviour is like ‘Lizzy’. Please come to realize that this is very hurtful to those around you and try to be more careful. This kind of behaviour is obviously hard to change, but being conscious of it is the first step. I am convinced it is not your intention to hurt people like, especially those you love, but it doesn’t change the harm. Please find the courage to apologize first and foremost. 

And to those who are going to say demisexuality doesn’t exist, just fuck off and go ramble somewhere else. I do not care for your judgements and your invalidations thank you.

What does hetero and demi mean? And where are you from cause i feel like youre a french can am i right

hetero and demi are about sexuality so i’m heterosexual but also demisexual which is when, to feel sexual attraction, one-self has to form an emotional bond before hand.. if you want more info on that you can visit the page i made on my blog about it (http://spaeknow.tumblr.com/demi) where many google links are stated as well !

Re sex confused anon: If orgasming is something you've never experienced how would you find out what they are? Also as someone w anxiety I can understand where she's coming from. Before doing a thing I'd want to know what's involved and what's expected of me. And saying "just do what comes naturally :)" unfortunately makes that anxiety worse. Having example of appropriate reactions would help immensely. I agree porn sucks as far as that but its better than nothing. For me anyway. Hypothetically.

Here’s the thing: your natural reactions ARE the most appropriate.

It’s not “better than nothing” actually nothing is  better than anything because the problem is your own internalized misogyny which causes you to feel anxious about looking perfect and performing for a man.

Porn is the problem, not the solution.
