Am I the only person who thought this was really fucking funny
A lot of the really funny moments in Lord of the Rings come from Tolkien playing with language like this, where we have relatively formal, archaic, âhighâ language responded to with informal, modern, âlowâ language.Â

I absolutely love love love the horror of late stage beleriand
Like at this point Morgoth has taken over literally everywhere except the haven of Sirion and the isle of Balar
The fruit is poisoned, rotten, or full of viscera
Animals are unnaturally aggressive and sauron''s wolves prowl through the land
Small ponds through beleriand are clear enough and look safe, even if you boil it you will die if you drink from these ponds
The land itself has been corrupted by Morgoth's evil, maybe beleriand itself is a thrall
Held captive and used against the very people it used to shelter
Nargothrond which was once a home for elves and dwarves now lies under a dragon's curse
Doriath that was safe in Melian's veil and the last place free of Morgoth's evil is now populated by fell spirits, Menegroth's once beautiful halls are now empty except for invasive plants and the glowing eyes of wraiths
Gondolin the secret city that hid away from war and bloodshed is burned
Himring which defended the frozen north is used as a fortress for the Enemy
The pools of ivrin once protected by ulmo now lie defiled by glaurung
The plants once foraged for healing now cause painful deaths and sickness
Beleriand itself is captured and controlled

As you said, I feel like late stage Beleriand was a literal horror show. The Valar managed to cleanse the worst of it but much more than they realised just. Clung on.
Fast forward to the end of the Third Age and we get to a really really weird mixture of things.
The remnants from Beleriand have sunk their teeth in various patches here and there. Thereâs a mix of magic and power from Morgoth, the Valar, Maiar, the ancient Elves and Men who built artefacts and sprawling cities and enchanted realms, all digging deep into the Earth.
They clash and merge to create rivers that wipe your memory and streams that feel disturbingly alive. Trees that hear but do not speak, some who shade you, some who grow piercing barbs overnight, spearing you where you sleep. Disturbing old graves to bring forth furious wraiths and laughing spirits, neither of whom can be trusted.
They say to be wary of the old ruins because some will ensnare you, leave you sobbing until thereâs nothing left. Make you see ancient cities in all their glory, a shade of what once was that digs claws into your mind so thereâs no escape. You forget to eat and sleep and one day collapse, and the ruins take you as they took so many before them.
Some places are just lonely. These are the most dangerous of all.
Thereâs a reason Rangers train so many years, ensure they have a network of contacts and friends across the land before heading out on their own.
See, Beleriand was wild because it was untouched by any save the creators of the place.
Middle Earth is wild because itâs oversaturated with millennia of powerful forces actively clashing against each other. And the memory of those battles is not so easily forgotten by the land.

Ruins taking people is such a good idea, i honestly love it so much! And lonely places!! I'm thinking so much about places that aren't malicious but are alive and lonely and just want you to stay with them...
Cultures and peoples from Beleriand survive and make it middle earth and the horror follows them!! (Though different)
Oh how absolutely terrifying it must be to be a traveler in middle earth, some places are violent, angry, and cruel; They hold the power of the Enemy
Some places hate you; Some love you, both are very dangerous for the traveler
Some trees are friends, they care for you (Their roots tangle around you; You cannot leave. It is dangerous outside. You will be safe with them)
Rivers that don't understand that you cannot breathe water; They just want you to stay with them (They will hold your bones; you will never be properly buried)
Trails that want you to stay just a little longer (A journey that should have taken hours takes days, weeks, months, years)
You try to move away from your small home in a forest; the trees will not let you, every path leads straight back (Why would you want to leave? The forest loves you, it keeps you safe! Do want more? It can give you more)
The forest sees the huntsman taking his kills home, to feed his family; The man is happy! (Dead animals pile up outside the huntsman's house, it starts small, rabbits, squirrels, cats, dogs, deer, wolves, a man... The forest wants to make him happy again!)
And then the places that hate...
Mountains shift the trail you are supposed to follow, they lead you to the peak, you fall; They want to see the terror in your eyes, as you know this was intentional
A marsh that remembers the Enemy's evil, that serves him (It grabs you, it drowns you, it sheds you body and uses it as a scarecrow; It holds onto your spirit and torments you till lady Galadriel comes through)
Wights that miss the first age; That want to test Angband's torture on new victims
I'm so normal about this (Lie)
The best part about things like this is if youâve spent your whole life, generations growing up in such a volatile land, that is your normal.
Travellers are used to this. The concept of a world where the land isnât alive, where it doesnât embrace, love, hate, miss, is almost unthinkable.
Many Eldar remember a time where the land made sense, there is a constant fear and wariness of this new land. They donât like travelling unless they have to. Stick to their cities and lands where they can mould the ground around them.
But menâs memories are short. Their experiences vivid and their souls adaptable. This is their life. Theyâd have it no other way.
The elves who remain see this truly in Aragornâs reign, a man who doesnât try to turn back time, but embraces this aching, lonely world and helps it heal. The land remains as active as ever, but perhaps the lonely places brighten as people come back, and those places of hate find themselves absorbing new life and strange moods as people whoâve lived their life in shadow and threat accept itâs pain and stay there anyway.
This is EXCELLENT. Resonates with me in a way I hadn't experienced in a while. But at the same time inspires me to think about the Second Age, as the age of transformation.
The Legends of the First Age are personally mostly dead (with only a few exceptions; Elrond keeps those memories alive, but only in Rivendell, so with limited reach).
I imagine NĂșmenorean exceptionalism partly tore the memories apart; like the native Enedwaithians knew about the residualy magical waters, about the wraiths in the burial mounds, and the nĂșmenoreans, in a few generations (1k years or so), simply forgot. Original inhabitants of Lond Angren knew the woods do live, and they forgot after gradually accepting nĂșmenorean culture.
The Second Age lasted for ~3k years, with the Eldar concentrated in only limited areas. Too much time and space for the Men inhabiting the rest of Middle-Earth to forget: which brings me specifically to how the Rohirrim considered Galadriel as a witch. Because she knew.
Third Age continues, but with the memory interrupted. Like, Bilbo knew the stories, but lacked the continuity. Hobbits of Buckland knew of Old Man Willow, but where the hell he came from?
Third Age is especially keen on legends, because thats when history
BECAME LEGEND.

Fun fact about TĂșrin's tomb engraving ('TĂșrin Turambar Dagnir Glaurunga'): if 'dagnir' was an actual Czech word, the entire statement, as it is written, would be grammatically correct in the mentioned language.
When first reading the Silmarillion, I pronounced it [dagĆir] and was quite perplexed. What does this word even mean in Czech? I was 13 or something, so my explanation was that I am not educated enough in my own language, rather than considering it's Sindarin. đ
All because of that "a" on the end of "Glaurunga"!

Absolutely beautiful, the facial expression is so very... right. I mean, considering the tone and atmosphere of Children of HĂșrin.
I should tell yâall about my guitar-Beleg AU thing or whatever.
So at a Czech TolkienCon they did a stageplay of Children of HĂșrin, and as I was watching it on YouTube the first time I was like âAwwww :-Câ after Beleg died because I thought he wouldnât be back until curtain call and so I was kinda bracing myself to not see him for a while.
Well, I was wrong. LikeâŠone or two scenes later, he appeared in the background with a guitar, and I just started laughing because I got this really blursed mental image of ghost-Beleg following TĂșrin around for the rest of his life, musically narrating everything he did, and TĂșrin couldnât hear him but Beleg didnât realize that and just thought that TĂșrin was intentionally ignoring him. It absolutely wrecked the mood of the scene, I wasnât even mad though.
Can you imagine him having to watch the whole Niënor thing unfold though?
Alternatively, what if he didnât know who NĂniel was any more than TĂșrin did and they found out at the same timeâŠ
