you are NOT immune to cunty little detective. at some point in your life your brain will be taken over by a fictional detective and there’s nothing you can do about it. it WILL happen to you. you might even end up transgender about it
for the last few years I've been keeping a spreadsheet of all the audio dramas I've listened to and why I liked them because my brain is a colander and I forget everything. this is how I know that I've now listened to the whole of (or up to the current point of) 205 podcasts. I'm housebound with a severe energy limiting chronic illness and have to rest in bed for 6-8 hours per day just to keep on an even keel so it is in no way an exaggeration to say that audio dramas are a large contributer to the fact that I haven't quite gone insane from sheer boredom (one of the things people don't tell you about chronic illness: oh my god it's so fucking boring)
one page in my spreadsheet is just a list of all the audio drama podcasts I have yet to listen to and think I might enjoy. there are currently 265 of them and I'm constantly adding new ones (it's been somewhere between 250 and 300 for about two years now)
whenever I finish a pod and need a new one to replace it with, I ask my friends to choose a number between 1 and 265 and whichever friend gets there first, I start listening to the podcast that has that number in my trusty spreadsheet. for some reason my friends are always delighted to get to choose my next podcast (which is great because I'm actually terrible at making any kind of decision)
also there's a lot of relistening (see above re forgetting everything)
anyway huge thanks to all the amazing audio drama creators out there! you keep me sane, which is no mean feat!
actually my best performing tumblr post is not the most reblogged one but is in fact the one about a very niche audio drama, which successfully reached the entirety of my target audience: the three other people who know what this podcast is
Potentially controversial but how does Bright Sessions have so many quotes from an antisemitic book series but also drop in random z!oni$t propaganda.
THIS
it drove me insane that they chose "to fix it from the inside" and so many other moments where they chose to preserve the status quo/the system also the slightly off treatment of poc in the og show ahhhhh I'm going to finish the college tapes mostly because I'm sure these are takes of the time
Idk much about the creators but good to know they've grown
THE AM ARCHIVES FAAAAAAKKKKKK

RIGHT the random hp mentions always freak me out when I relisten to tbs, still one of my favourite podcasts though
fr! im up to the college tapes and I swear I almost dropped the show so many times getting here but I love how character and their interpersonal relationships are written in this show too much 🫠

Fawx & Stallion S3 kickstarter go check them out!! It a comedy detective fiction podcast about the best detectives (some say second best Sherlock & John who?) in london.

to my audio drama mutuals: does anyone have a recommendation of a short audio drama that someone could listen to in a day or so? I really want to get back into audio drama but all of my favourite shows are quite long and with a lot of them I kind of need to relisten to parts before I catch up and I think this is making me procrastinate getting back into them. I think if there was something that I could listen to quickly I’d get reinvested in the form and feel more motivated to catch up on my favourite shows if that makes sense. Really any genre is fine just as long as it’s shortish and it’s something you really like.
Short stuff that quickly hooked me
Horror
Deviser (by Harlan Guthrie very gory very cool)
Swashbuckling Musical
Ballad of Anne and Mary
Ridiculous comedy -
True Tales of the Illuminati
Starship Q Star
Private Detective Randy Randy
Detective/Mystery/Sci-fi
Badlands Cola
Episodic
Superhuman Public Radio
The One Stars
Welcome to Nightvale (not short but can listen randomly)
Community Cat News
also now that i've been here for a few hours i have gotten a few recs through following the #audio dramas tag but if i like gravity falls, found family, and queer people, what would you recommend?
i have found @twigsandhearts, @theholmwoodfoundation, and @kingmakerpod.. what else is out there? excited to know!
mostly light but plotty sci-fi queer found family types:
Juno Steel + Second Citadel (Two stories of the Penumbra Podcast)
Strange Case of Starship Iris
EOS10
We Fix Space Junk
Starship Q Star
potentially Ballad of Anne and Mary? It's more swashbuckling pirating tho but it's a fav.
Also more episodic and very chill but also meets what youre looking for imo:
Absolutely no Adventures
Welcome to Nightvale
(Edited for clarity)
This has probably been done before but I'm emotional over them again
The Arthur Lester Fandom page is so funny. There's a chart of all of his injuries and istg there's like 10 in a row that just say "fall". Remember falling in holes, Arthur?
My favorite genre of historical fiction is “we don’t care about historical accuracy, we just wanna have fun”
With such great hits as
Our Flag Means Death
Fawx & Stallion
Im sure there’s more and I will edit this if I remember more in the morning
The Ballad of Anne and Mary!
Audiodrama recs??
I don't mean at all to sound like a hater or anything, but like everytime I ask for podcast recommendations it's always the same 3 shows and none of them are really my kinda vibe. I don't like anthology. I don't like horror spooky creepy eerie whatever type podcasts. And I'm kinda on the fence about sci-fi. (I'm also not a big fan of a lot of narration, but only once have I been recommended one of those).
One of my favorite podcasts ever was The Bright Sessions. I loved the vibe of it, the character interactions, the creative use of abilities to explore character problems, and the way the primary conflicts and drama were all rooted in their interpersonal relationships. It felt dynamic, fresh, young, fun. Nothing has really lived up since.
Please tell me someone has something in the same vein.
For some very character- and relationship-driven audio dramas, I’d recommend:
Inn Between
Fawx & Stallion
The Kingmaker Histories
Stories From Ylelmore
Hello From the Hallowoods (it comes across as an anthology for the first few episodes, but the characters and storylines start weaving together pretty quickly)
Arden
Back Again, Back Again
Badlands Cola
The Ballad of Anne & Mary
Brimstone Valley Mall
Camlann
Desperado
Eeler’s Choice
The Far Meridian
Greater Boston
The Harbingers
Hearthbound
The Holmwood Foundation
In Strange Woods
InCo
Levian
Life With LEO(h)
Me and AU
Second Star to the Left
Seen and Not Heard
Small Victories
Starfall
The Tower
Unwell
Wooden Overcoats
That’s a fairly broad net, so hopefully something in there can catch your eye!
time is fake
i hate what podcast has become synonymous with because please i’m not listening to alpha male gym bros deny climate change i’m listening to my gay blorbos go through the horrors there’s a big difference
