best case scenario Digital Circus gets remembered in a similar way as Steven Universe: a show that was Really Fucking Good and had nuanced characters and interesting things to say, but the audience wasn't quite ready for it and it imploded into a discourse ball. four years from now I expect to see lesbians drawing Jax like she's a renaissance muse the same way people still draw Pearl or Lapis

#i do feel cheated out of a proper redemption arc but yeah #otherwise a good fuckin show #not quite steven universe levels of good #su is much more interested in its own lore i think #i can't really think of any SU plotholes or lore gaps in its 5/6 seasons & movie? tadc has quite a few in its 1 #so yes i do think su is the better show but i hope tadc is remembered fondly and revisited often #i would be so stoked to get a season 2 where the cast seeks to help the abstractions #especially if the real life versions of them got involved #i have a whole plot in mind and written out maybe I'll share that here at some point

observation: a lot of people talk about jax's view of her womanhood like she's repressed it or that she had some sort of big Discovery moment, and that is juuuuust not accurate. "repression" by definition implies that she is not aware of the fact that she's a woman or that her life would be better if she could just be a woman.

she's kind of, like, UNDENIABLY aware of this? it is a fact that she came out to her mom before she ended up in the circus. it's true that she tries not to think about it, but she definitely knows she is a woman in every single scene we see her in. like...her egg line is self-aware. her egg is already cracked and she knows it. she just can't get out of the shell because she is THAT afraid of the consequences of being a trans woman.

her whole arc is that of someone who was forced into the closet by fear (fear with a very legitimate source). it's not ignorance of her own womanhood. she is extremely self-aware about THAT, at the very least. and i'm being pedantic about the word choice, but repression just means something different and also frames her differently. call it suppression. she knows who she is and has even accepted that it's an unchangeable and inescapable part of her. she's just staying in the closet because she's too afraid to leave it.

the writing choice to stick a closeted trans woman in digital hell where she's forced to look like a looney tunes guy for eternity and her greatest fear is being laughed at and treated like a caricature For Being A Trans Woman is like...maybe the most diabolical and incisive cultural critique i have ever seen. imagine being a closeted and homeless and recently traumatized trans woman suddenly popping up in the digital circus and this one woman is just raggedy ann and some other guy's just a chesspiece and you're a Joke Rabbit from the Man In A Dress Tricking People Cartoons. because an ai trained on family-friendly american media looked into a scan of your entire brain and decided that's the body that best fits you.
