thejordana:
between school work and doing research, jordana isn’t sure she’s seen much of anything apart from books and the inside of the library. sometimes she wished she could go back to the first year where she could lock herself in her dorm room and get on with her work, but being part of the scooby gang pushed her to want to contribute so she was trying to split her time. the one good thing was there always seemed to be someone offering coffee and that was all she needed to get on with things.
pulling out a chair to sit down, her eyebrows furrow together when it cracks and comes apart, leaving her to look down in confusion. she noticed it had been happening a lot, she’d even broke her locker the other day. forgetting she wasn’t alone, she jumped slightly as finley’s voice broke through her thoughts and she turned to look at her. she could feel tears pricking the corners of her eyes but she blinked them away because she refused to cry when she couldn’t explain anything. “yeah, said shit about my leather jacket so it got what it deserved,” she murmured with a forced smile, pulling it to the side so it was out of the way. “if anyone asks, someone else broke it before me and i was just the unlucky one to pick it up.”
walking over, finn kicks at the chair softly. it collapses pathetically onto the ground with a dull thud. she then kicks it again without much damage. “well, fuck that chair then. it shouldn’t talk shit about your jacket. it’s a nice jacket.” she lifts a hand to brush off jordana’s shoulder before fixing her collar. “you alright? you look like you’ve seen a ghost or something. i doubt it’s that though since you don’t believe in all that.” she tilts a head to look up at her. “alright, i can run with that. any reason you don’t want the group to know you broke an old, shitty library chair? do you have chair rage issues?” she leans in to whisper. “do you need to go back to meetings?” finn does her best to put jordana at ease. maybe joking about it will help ease the tension building on her shoulders.
betaxbe-were:
Dylan would have waved back, but his arms were so full that he did an awkward sort of shoulder wave, grinning at his friend. “I’m pretty much in the same boat. I think there’s something there, but I can’t seem to make any connections in my head. We’ll get there, I’m sure. Or … I hope.” Adding on as an afterthought, he asked, “Have you come across any fun town tidbits that you didn’t already know? I’d be interested.” Grinning, he realized that he had intercepted her, as she had seemed to be walking with purpose. “Where are you headed? I can walk you, if you want.”
holding out her hand, finn moves to help dylan with all the bags in his arms. she bumps her shoulder with him softly. “hey, if anyone can figure it out, you can. i know your team is in the right hands. maybe all of us are picking up the pieces to the final puzzle. maybe it’s not supposed to make sense yet. i have to believe that. anything you wanna share?” she sighs loudly as her shoulders sag. they continue to walk and she glances around before leaning in again. “local legend says in 1843, there was a large sex party in the woods that were broken up by some sort of loud bellowing howl echoing all around them. i had never seen that before. as the validity... not entirely sure.” she pauses in her step. “oh, um. i wanted to get something to eat. but i can walk with you. did i interrupt?”
kendalldecker:
kendall is silently appreciative of how touchy finley can be. she closed herself off from things like this for so long. she was even a big skeptical to hit on finn all those weeks ago while she was at the library, watching the other from afar. but there was something deep inside of her, maybe her own subconscious or the voice of her mother telling her to go after whatever it is her heart desired. and whatever it was lead her right to finn, and kendall doesn’t recall a time she was happier, and just so grateful to have someone who cares for her despite all her scars. there’s a few moments that linger where she’s watching the other before the documents are plucked from her grip and kiss is placed against her lips. the action causes a small smile to form to her features before her thumb grazes gently over the apple of finn’s cheek.
“i’m sure we can find call records somewhere…” there’s a cautionary glance around the room, searching for anything that may be labeled as such. they’ve already procured a decent amount of evidence, but kendall doesn’t plan on repeating their actions tonight as long as she cal help it. her demeanor is calm and cool but the absolute explosion her father would have if he’d known about any of this is still very present in her mind. “you don’t think they’d be on the computer, do you?” she’s pressing a hand to finn’s waist to scoot behind her and into her father’s desk chair, looking at the drawers in his desk that could possibly contain what they’re looking for. she tries to pull a few out only to realize they’re all locked. “of course the man with the same password for everything wants to believe in security now…” it’s mostly said under her breath, and is paired with an eyeroll. she’s back to fiddling with keys, finally landing on one small enough for the locks on either side of her. once they’re open, she’s rummaging through practically nothing. the first two top drawers are basically junk drawers, filled with a handful of chargers for his cell phone, a few notes with his familiar chicken scratch handwriting and nothing of much value.
“we could try online if you think it’s worth a shot.”
busy looking through the files to make sure she’s not missing anything, finn almost misses kenny speaking to her. her head pops up to see her slipping into the computer chair. she slips the files into kendall’s bag before nodding. nowhere else to sit, she climbs onto her lap. taking a moment, she nuzzles into her and kisses the tip of her nose. “hi. you okay? i know we’re breaking and entering a bunch of other crimes, but you alright?” she pauses to look over kendall’s face to make sure she doesn’t miss a tell. she kisses each cheek before turning in her lap.
not wanting to risk getting caught, finn turns and begins to tap perimeters into the computer. she’s not even sure anyone even made this OS anymore. it baffles her how the entire town of bridgemead counted on this police department hanging by a thread. “do you have an idea of where he might organize those old reports?”

endless hours of research aren’t doing much for the tightness in finn’s shoulders. she’s not sure she’s seen the inside of her apartment in the last few days. every time she thinks she’s exhausted an avenue of interest, something new pops into her mind. she’s unsure where everyone else is. some drift in out between classes and work. she thinks someone slipped out to pick up snacks and coffee. her stomach grumbles at the thought. she wonders if there’s still sunlight above ground.
rubbing at her eyes, she turns when she hears the cracking of wood behind her. it’s startling. she rounds quickly and sees jordana holding the crumpled remains of a chair. her jaw drops a little as she stands there watching. finn’s fairly certain her friend is a werewolf, but she hasn’t wanted to bring it up. but all signs point to that conclusion. clearing her throat, she offers a sheepish smile. “those things were probably rotting anyway. you okay? did it say something out of pocket? the chairs are from a different time.”
kendalldecker:
“that’s us deckers. creatures of habit,” she responds when finley mentions her father’s password was her birthday. it always had been some kind of arrangement, either her birthday, audrey’s, or he and her mother’s wedding anniversary. her father had always been just that - predictable. and she’s glad that despite many a talking to where kendall made him aware of the ever changing digital age they were in, and how easily he could get hacked into should someone other than his own daughter ever notice a pattern. she’ll still be on his ass about it, but at least in this moment, it came in handy. once finn says she’s taken care of the cameras, she’s motioning the other toward her father’s office. “aj said she wanted stuff about the cemetery, and anywhere else that might have a connection, right?” she flashes the light over toward two large filing cabinets. “let’s get to looking then.”
heading toward the second one, she opened the cabinet labeled U-Z. anything about the william’s family and the cemetery was her goal to find, and after sifting through what seemed like hundreds of records, she’s able to pluck out a handful of documents that may look promising. she’s careful closing the cabinet, shuffling the documents together and tucking them under her arm. “there’s got to be upwards of ten different documents here about the cemetery. about renovations, destruction of property, and a few notable obituaries. anything else you think we should be looking for?” she gets in close to finn, keeping her voice low. “you’re the criminal mastermind, after all.”
slipping out of the chair, finn tucks it back in the way it was. not one thing out of place. she makes her way through the department until she slips inside the chief’s office. her eyes immediately look over every inch. it’s like something out of a sitcom -- all the framed photos. she reaches out and trails across the younger faces of kendall and audrey. her heart clenches at everything kendall’s lost. she walks up behind her and wraps her arms around her waist pressing a soft kiss to her shoulder, or as far up as she can reach. even in the middle of crimes, finley reasons there’s always time for affection. “correct. it’s what the boss wants. there could be some sort of old connection that we’re not even thinking about. it definitely wouldn’t be digital and so far, no real luck in the archives.”
she releases kenny and trails after her to the cabinet. she begins to search through trying to remember any last name that may be associated with the cemetery or surrounding area. it takes them some time to sift through everything, but eventually they locate a few promising files. quickly, finn lifts up and pop kisses kendall before plucking the documents from her fingers. “you’re lucky i happen to be fond of you. is there any way to look for old disturbances or calls in that area? would your dad have anything like that? i mean dating back... probably before his time as chief.”
kendalldecker:
kenny takes a few steps to the front doors of the station, fiddling with the keys until one finally slipped into the lock before turning it to release the door. “really? you strike me as someone who uses their alleged innocence to their advantage. hell, you can’t even reach most shelves let alone break into the town’s police station. which is why i think you’d be the perfect person to do it. i’m onto you, parker,” and just like that, they’re in the lobby of the station. there are chairs lined up against heavily-postered walls, each section separated by little side tables that had various stacks of outdated magazines and newspapers from dates before kendall was born. she remembers days of running around this very lobby with an older audrey on days the girls were off and wanted to pay a visit to their father’s work. kendall didn’t care much for the hero aspect of her father’s job, usually using this time to raid the drawer of stickers her father’s receptionist kept for times the decker daughters would pop in.
“you can access the security system at the front desk.” she motions in the direction of the computer in question, swinging around the desk to pull out the chair for finley. “if i remember correct, his passwords are typically the same few phrases. try, uh… 42101.” she slips a small utility flashlight out from her jacket pocket, flashing it toward the door to her father’s office. she starts going through the process with the keys once more before finding the correct one, popping the lock open as quietly as possible before offering the other a glance in her direction. all she can see are finn’s features lit up by the dim glow of the computer screen, the sight a bit hard to tear her gaze from before she’s peering into her father’s office. she doesn’t dare proceed without finley, though, as she’s more than positive that finn was the brains of this operation. whether or not this makes kendall the brawn isn’t clear - all she did was grab a set of keys off of a hook in her kitchen. “jeez, old man, talk about vintage,” she mutters to herself upon realization that her father’s office hadn’t changed since the day she’s first ever seen it. there are still certificates and awards lining the walls, but something that catches her eyes immediately are the homemade picture frames that sat proudly on his desk, various school photos of she and audrey growing up, as well as family photos from vacations and holidays. “baby,” she urges the other silently, “did you get in?”
finley can’t remember the last time she was in this building. maybe when she was younger. she has faint memories of her father dragging her, but she’s unsure. nothing about this place called to her. she didn’t trust the department as much as she liked chief decker. her eyes looked around the place quickly counting the cameras she saw. nothing state of the art. she was surprised these models still even ran. but she wasn’t about to offer advice to her girlfriend’s father about upping his security. sinking down into the chair, she glances up at kendall with a soft smile. “your birthday, huh? that’s cute. as for being innocent and using it to my advantage, i simply refuse to comment.” her fingers are already off to the races. she types in the numbers and the screen easily flashes to light. she makes a note to wipe any trace of her unlocking the computer at this time. better safe than sorry.
she pauses briefly once the program opens to look at kenny. this place was an extension of home. she can see the edges where family wins out here. not just for her dad, but everyone else under his command. finn wonders what it’s like to have a family that cares. she’s sure her father doesn’t carry a picture of her in his wallet. her school pictures certainly never lined the walls of the trailer. she shakes her head and returns to the screen. she runs through the last few days of footage looking for anything out of the ordinary, but finds nothing. she works on overwriting the footage to look like they were never here and to cover when they leave. she then deletes traces of ever being on the computer. at the sound of kenny’s voice, she lifts her head, smile immediately finding her lips. “yeah, not a problem. i’m done here. they really need to think about upgrading. this is run by two hamsters in a wheel. you need help?”
kendalldecker:
it’d be a lie to say kendall wasn’t at least a bit nervous about she and finley’s plans for tonight. but growing up with her father as the sheriff of bridgemead did come with some perks. namely, she had his routine down to a science. he was always the one who stayed late, unable to keep his guys away from their families any longer than they had to be. he’d either raid the break room fridge for something edible, or kendall would place a pick up order at the diner down the road and join him in a late dinner while x-files reruns played on the television in the lobby. given their work schedules, the two were like passing ships in the night. now that it was just them two, moments like these were few and far between, so she cherished them even if on this particular night, she was going to wind back up at the station, sans her father or his knowledge of it.
she watched as the other adjusted the beanie on her head, the sight of her own clothing engulfing finley’s already small frame proving amusing to the brunette. “you’re…” she pauses momentarily before slipping a set of keys out from her jacket pocket. “adorable.” the jingle of the keys is the only thing that could be heard other than their hushed tones. “but i mean, if one of them is the wrong key… or if like, the lock sticks, i’m sure that’ll come in handy.” she teases before placing her hand on the back of finley’s neck, using the leverage to press a kiss against her forehead. she keeps her hand in the position for a few beats, fingers subconsciously combing through finn’s hair. “you look incredibly stealthy. are you sure you haven’t done this before?” brows raise at the comment before her gaze shifts to the front doors of the station.
“let’s get this show on the road, shall we?”
the smile grows on her face before she pulls it back. she pokes kenny’s shoulder while attempting to roll her eyes. “i’m not adorable. i’m a criminal in training. i guess if i’m going to start my offline life of crime then i might as well go big.” her expression draws serious. “wait, i actually am a criminal. hacking is heavily frowned upon. does that do it for you?” she tilts her head and lifts an eyebrow as she looks up. her expression drops when kenny pulls out the keys. she drops the bobby pin back into her pocket. “i should have known you’d have keys.” the kiss to her forehead causes her eyes to slam shut. her arms encircle her waist as she tugs kendall into her tightly.
lifting up, she places a soft kiss to her chin before pulling away. “i have never broken into the actual police department before, no.” pulling the sleeves of kenny’s flannel over her hand, she nods somberly. “let’s go. out life of crime awaits us. hopefully less tragic and abusive than bonnie and clyde.” she takes a step back and swings her arms a little wildly to allow kendall to go first. she trails after her closely, eyes swinging around to make sure no one is watching them. “there’s cameras right? i can overwrite the footage when we get inside.”

Dylan had been haunted by the list of client names since he laid eyes on them, and was starting to think he was seeing the names in his sleep. It was a little frustrating, not to be able to draw connections between the information that he’d been given. Between starting a new semester and trying to solve the mystery, he knew he was going to need to load up on snacks. And so, he left the grocery store, arms laden with bags full of all of his favourite snacks to keep him going. Walking deeper into the town square, he was happy to see the familiar face of one of his friends, and he called out, “Hey stranger!” Once closer to them, he lowered his voice a little, “How’s your search for info going?”
after work, all finn wanted was a large plate of waffles with too much syrup. and a large cup of coffee to feed her caffeine addiction. anything to get through the next few hours. just because her official work day was over, didn’t mean she wasn’t about to pile back into the basement for more research. the voice draws her attention as she filters through her thoughts. she smiles when she sees dylan and lifts a hand to wiggle her fingers at him. “long time no see.” she takes a step closer to him and offers a little shrug with a grimace. “about as well as can be expected. there’s a lot of information to go through. what about you? anything successful?”

pulling the beanie down tighter over her ears, finn looks around before her eyes land back on kenny. she lifts her eyebrows a few times hoping she can see her in the dark. tonight calls for stealth. this isn’t the usual romp in the library with hours and hours of research (and the occasional stolen kiss). no, this was something else. she was a little fatigued from all the research. her new notebook was already filled with scribbles and possible leads. but nothing that jumped out as immediate evidence. so tonight, they broke into the bridgemead police department. apparently the chief didn’t have everything digital and looking through the hardcopy files might yield something they missed or ava didn’t know about.
leaning in close, finley lifts up on her tiptoes to whisper. she can’t even reach, but it’s close enough. she pulls a bobby pin from her pocket and holds it up. “i watched a few youtube videos on how to pick locks. i’m fairly certain i can do it. i practiced a few times on my apartment door, but they building is old and shitty. but same mechanics right? how well can the police department be locked?” she wiggles the pin in front of kenny’s face. “also, do you think i look stealthy enough? not like a full blown criminal, but i could possibly be going through another emo phase or up to no good.”
thejordana:
“sounds like a plan to me and exactly why i figured yoga mats would be a good idea. you don’t always want to work up a sweat with a punch bag so a bit of stretching will help get your circulation going. who knows, might even re-energise you and you’ll find something you might have missed before,” she explains, a small smile pulling at the corners of her lips. “exploring the town will probably be high on the list now i’m part of this, gives me a chance to see more of it.” the mention of waffles makes her stomach grumble and she has started to note that she’s been eating more than usual. “okay okay, i’m trusting you on this.”
she is still not 100% sure why she is part of the group or what she has to offer when it compares to the others in the group. “i hope i can read and take notes with what i’m doing for my major,” she chuckles, running her fingers through her hair. “no i get that and you don’t have to keep apologising, just keep doing what you need to do,” she hums, shooting her an encouraging smile. “okay you’re on. maybe if i read and take some notes, we can get to those waffles a little quicker.”
“you’re a genius. if anyone tells you anything different, they’re full of shit.” finley readjusts the strap of her bag before glancing around at the rest of the group. everyone seems to be enthralled in their own thing. she turns back to jordana. “there’s a lot of cool things this town has to offer. plus history. and if you like mystery, there’s no shortage of that. people like to give flimsy excuses before they get the hell out. but that’s not always the truth.” lifting a hand, she points a finger at her. “then you’re perfect for this assignment. and not to be bias, but i think this is probably way more interesting than what you’re forced to read and study at school.” tilting her head, finn gives her another smile. “thanks. you’re right. if we all work together, the quicker we can go get some waffles. it’s been like three days since i had my last waffle. i’m jonesing.”
investigatingaj:
there’s so much danger in idealising what they have, but aj can’t help herself and apparently so can’t a significant portion of their members, considering the name they sport. still, she’s willing to take on the risk. she turns her head, gaze lifting from the falling fist to finley’s kind face. “you’re right. i won’t.” she goes from exuding confidence to snorting at her amusement and shrugging a shoulder. “i think it might be.” for a moment, aj thinks maybe this is the most laidback she’s ever seen the other.
quickly, though, they’re back on topic. “a ritual is a good point. it seems like something changed and if we can identify what, we’re a step closer to solving this… but if this thing is written by stephen king and eats kids, i’ll have many, many complaints.” it’s not like aj is scared of clowns… mostly. she’d just prefer a ghost and preferably not a clown ghost. it aligns with what ava told them. they have to focus on whatever they’re getting from this little outing. at the very least they have ava’s information, if not a greater understanding of the cemetery. if they happen to find anything, it’ll all come to build a case. raising her eyebrows at finn’s quiet suggestion, she shrugs a shoulder and suppresses a smile. “well, kody volunteered himself for being ghost bait, so you add a stakeout to that and we might have a plan for what to do next, other than me adding things to the board, which i’m already itching to do.”
the smile lingers for a few more seconds. it’s strange going from having no one to surrounded by a whole new group. to know she’s not entirely bungled it calms finn. focusing back on the project before them, she chews on her bottom lip. “what is with everyone and stephen king references? can we hope that this isn’t a children of the corn or it parallel? i think maybe some sort of ritual was done. how long was mr. williams running this place? why would the shift of energy suddenly happen? why would it spook him so bad?” the smile on aj’s face gets finn’s attention. it stops her from full on rambling. “why not both things? you can always add more things to the board. and we can also plan an old fashioned stakeout.” she sighs. “why am i not surprised that kody offered himself up as ghost bait? is that safe?”
kendalldecker:
kendall is no stranger to cases of mischievous kids. as a kid, she remembers many a night her father was called in to investigate some happenings around town that just happened to be a group of kids stirring up trouble. whether it was teepeeing a house of a teacher, rattling around trash cans to scare older residents of bridgemead, or basic hell raising you’d expect from them. “definitely not something i could see happening… unless, they’re not typical kids. if we’re talking… things of the supernatural vein…” there’s hesitance in her voice as she tries her hardest to keep on track with the motives aj is looking into. “maybe their mischief is much darker than what they’d want us to think. i don’t know anything that could yield such results other than… like, a ouija board. i know it’s stupid—” she pauses when a kiss is pressed to her jaw, not a new occurrence for them but seemingly flooring each and every time.
her praise is appreciated, considering she is completely and utterly out of her comfort zone. “well, like i told aj… i don’t think there’s much we can rule out just yet. but once we get more leads, that’ll lead to things we can follow up on, things we can constitute as a dead end. once all the weeding out is through, we’ll eventually find our answer.” when she mentions accessing some records, she’s sure either through her own snooping or finn’s expert hacking, that was a definite possibility. “well, if you need any help, i’m all yours.” she lifts finn’s hand to her lips, pressing a kiss to her knuckles. “robert william’s has been running the cemetery as long as anyone in this town can remember. he’s probably got a file bigger than king’s ‘it’.”
finn can see the way kendall is trying. the corner of her mouth twitches up into a half smile. “i’d rather not think about some creepy black eyed kids causing trouble. at least not yet. if that’s the case...,” she pauses to shudder. “it’s not stupid. stop that. ouija boards may have been mass produced by hasboro, but it doesn’t negate the fact that they can be used to bring forth evil shit. so it’s a good thought. maybe not a ouija board, but you can do all sorts of rituals. i’ll have to look into that too. there’s just so much left open ended.”
her stomach flips at the easy way kenny kisses her knuckles. her cheeks flush even in the cool saturday morning air. her train of thought seems to stop, lost for a second. the information swirling around her head calms. “i will need help. we all need help. i think aj and jordana are coming back to the library with me. are you going to come or you have to skip out? i wouldn’t mind all hands on deck.” her eyes widen at the reference. she remembers tim curry in the clown make up from the mini series. she watched it far too young and it still haunts her to this day. “does your dad keep physical copies of files or is it all digital?”
kendalldecker:
she’s aware that the moment will come up again later tonight most likely, when they’re back at the archives and kendall’s guard is lower than ever. and silently, she’s grateful that finley doesn’t push the topic. kenny doesn’t exactly feel comfortable around the others just yet, and right now all she can handle is one person knowing most of her demons. secured even tighter against the other now, her free hand cupping finley’s face at her jawline. her thumb glides gently against the apple of her cheek momentarily before she begins to recount what ava had been telling her and aj about earlier that morning. “weird’s an understatement. i kinda just kept my mouth shut the entire time. you could tell she knew we were rookies. but she seemed to be… really shaken up about something.” she starts, happily remaining in their stance despite the not-so romantic nature of their conversation. “she even said she’s seen some things herself. shadows, lights. she’s even said she heard wailing, or something that sounded like music blasting. which from an apartment building would make sense, but on this massive ass property? i don’t think anyone is coming to see their loved ones with a boombox over their head a la john hughes.”
kendall is definitely a skeptic but her goal isn’t to bring the group down. clearly they were passionate about finding an answer to the many questions plaguing ava after the loss of her grandfather, a beloved pillar of bridgemead just as her mother was, so the last thing she was going to do was take that away from them - from all of them. “perhaps it would be helpful to look into some of the people in the plots here. maybe an old enemy of the william’s family… uh, who knows…” she begins to feel a little unsteady in her speculation, well aware that if anyone was a rookie, it was her. “all i’m saying is, one of the top three motives of murder is vengeance. next to, well, robbery and jealousy. we can’t rule those out either, i guess.” fingers absentmindedly comb through golden tresses, fingers twirling in finley’s hair momentarily.
closing her eyes, finn allows kendall to touch her face. she selfishly doesn’t want the moment to end. the world stops for a moment before she forces herself to open her eyes. it feels big to have this unspoken trust between the two and she doesn’t take it for granted. she inhales deeply before looking back up. if kenny wanted to talk about the case and not focus on the rest of it, she could do that. “ava’s definitely freaked out about something. she knows this property. she knows this cemetery. something would have to really have shifted for it to shake not only her, but her grandfather. it’s weird that they would go out to look and not see anything. what kids would keep up the whole ruse? they’d get bored and move onto something else. and no kid is bad seeding it up with old man williams.”
lifting up on her tiptoes, finn presses a soft kiss to the underside of her jaw. “now you’re thinking like an investigator. i already talked to aj about that. she’s going to email ava about a list of client names. it could be tied to them. i also told her maybe someone did something to stir up the ghosts? i’m going to check history to see if anything like this has happened before in this area. it’s completely possible.” she wipes at the mark her chapstick left behind before nodding. “no, no, you’re right. we can’t rule out human means either. ava said she fell asleep. anything or anyone could have been waiting for him to show up alone. we should check if he had a life insurance policy. maybe i can access those records.”
investigatingaj:
“you know, you’re making a lot of very fair points and i don’t think i like it. we’re just cutting our teeth on ghosts, we know almost nothing.” it was very clear that aj didn’t enjoy knowing almost nothing, thus her effort towards trying to reveal the dark underbelly of bridgemead so she can understand it. she nods and sucks in a breath, shrugging her shoulders. “it’s okay. i like the way your mind works, you keep me from an accidental one track mind.” she appreciates too, that finn has so much faith in her as a leader. “i’ll try to keep us from screwing this up.”
such positivity and confidence, that’s usually the kind of thing aj is assuring everyone else of. sometimes she needs to hear it too. “have you always been this delightfully encouraging?” she teasingly asks. her own faith in the fact that they just might have the ability to figure this out returns and she’s back to discussing the task at hand: beginning to dissect what ava told them. “apparently seeing strange things was commonplace, but it did strike me as odd that apparently it was worse this summer. if ghosts already existed in this cemetery in some form… seems like there’s something different going on. then again, we don’t really know what ghosts are typically capable of, if there are different levels…” aj makes a face, a screwed up smile, appreciating that she can dive right into this mystery. “maybe we look into deaths via ghosts, or any other unusual deaths in cemeteries… i can write out all the details about the haunting that ava described and we can compare them to other stories. sound good?”
“isn’t that how any great story starts? the heroes know nothing, but learn along the way. it’s the start of another great story. i think we can figure it out.” finn pauses to run a hand through her hair. a chill runs through her as a breeze picks up through the cemetery. ava’s words stick with her, more thoughts swirling around. there would be time to get lost in them later. “we all have to keep each other in check. i think it helps. we all work in different ways.” with a soft fist, she bumps aj’s shoulder. “you won’t let us screw this up. we won’t screw it up.”
her head falls back with a laugh followed by an over exaggerated shrug. “i wouldn’t know. i’ve never had any real friends to encourage. is it working?” her face draws back into seriousness. “do you think maybe someone did something to kick up activity? some sort of ritual? i’m thinking of looking up this time of year and location. maybe this sort of thing has happened here before. maybe it only happens every fifty or one hundred years. maybe something is agitating these ghosts.” she pulls out her notebook and adds the suggestions aj’s made. “good idea. i was thinking something along those lines. sounds perfect. a good starting point at least. are we also...” she pauses and looks around before leaning in. “are we going to do an old fashioned stakeout? see if we see anything ourselves?”
