Barrel frame with full on wide has given these shots of Istanbul a different perspective. I can’t always see through the viewfinder when I reach 10mm widest that the barrel gives distortion until the photos are developed.
My old stomping ground, where it’s actually considered the European part of Istanbul and yet it bewilders me with the juxtaposition of practically everything. Old meets new, East meets West and everything else that clashes, contradicts and confuses the observer.

So we are well into March, a quarter into 2016. Time is passing so quickly. Spring is almost well on it’s way and there is a change in the air.
‘Give yourself flowers’ is my new motoI saw a charming drawing on Instagram and have made it my mantra since. I adore flowers; the colours brighten my day, the way they bloom gives me light and the scent lifts my spirit. I like to buy myself flowers but this new mantra means more than just that.
To me, it means: when I’m down, to lift myself up, I give myself a bunch of flowers; it means when I’m not feeling good, bake a cake, something tasty and pretty that makes me proud. Tend to my plants and make sure they’re healthy. Meditate with my beloved crystals and drink the energy in. ‘Give yourself flowers’ means indulge in art and culture by wandering around museums and galleries on a day off, it means buying a ticket for yourself to enjoy a performance. It means treating yourself to a new pair of shoes, or lighting candles and having a huge bubble bath.
My mantra means be kind to yourself, listen to yourself, get to know yourself, love yourself, learn about yourself, take care of yourself.
We as humans, have a bad habit of expecting others to do things for us, to make us feel better about ourselves, to validate us. We are easily let down and our feelings are hurt when we have such high expectations of others and often place blame on others for things that should be looked at closer to home.
My view is that we also put a lot of unnessasary pressure and conjure up negative thoughts about ourselves, we should learn to be kinder to ourselves and accept responsibility for our own behaviour and choices, to be moe independent and mentally solid, once that strength has been developed, we should bestow the same kindness and warmth to those around us.
Take some time out to really listen to yourself, do the things you enjoy; find ways to gain peace and insight. Treat yourself kindly and give yourself flowers because you deserve to feel bright and happy!

Today I walked around the forest, taking in the peace, enjoying the hum of birds and forest creatures. It’s very cold here in Göcek. but outside of the Green Valley it seems to be warmer. Winter is here but there are reminders that autumn is clinging on. There are still some beautiful colourful leaves and the begonville is still vibrant as it is in the summer; oranges and lemons still exude colour amongst the dark greens and greys too, but the pommegrantes that remain on the trees are now dried up shells of hardened leather.
Bilberry was fragrant but not as plump as I remember. There wasn’t a soul insight, apart from the wandering village woman with burnt orange henna-coloured hair.
January 2016.
A thought:
It’s a shame that when a series of unfortunate events occur, some people may state that they can’t wait for the year to be through and the presence of a new year means better things and more positive experiences.
I stopped rushing through time in that way, casting the remaing days of an expiring year behind me before I had even had a chance to live them. What a pity that days are disregarding in this way!?
Each year, month, week and day can be a reminder that something new is yet to happen and positive experiences are mainly made from your interpretation to your surroundings and your reaction to the events in your life.
It’s been cold, and I feel like I’ve been in hibernation but I welcome January and hope that it’ll be productive and inspiring for all.
Self reminders for January:
Read regularly. You’ve got some great books that are gathering dust.
Slow down, don’t rush in your surroundings. The journey is just as important.
Take more photos of what you love. Spend more time doing this.
That’ll do for now.

This was a test roll with the camera that was given to me. It worked well here but I soon learned that it wouldn’t last when I took it away with me to Thailand and got a bunch of images like this (not a bad thing), this, and this back (not so great when you’re intentionally not going for the arty look!).
I loved the specks of white which I can only pressume the emulsion layer had been scratched by the mechanics inside the camera body while winding the film for the next shot. I do like the look of them.

A fluid, calm and atmospheric way to travel Istanbul without the overcrowding and thick road traffic. Aboard a vessle, you can jump from Asia to Europe with such ease.
The light alters the atmosphere, but the best time is when the sun is low and the golden light streams through the windows; the steam from a glass of cay curls and long, dark, anonymous shadows sit calmly as the the ferry reaches a pier.
Winter time is a different story altogether. White skies contrast with grey gulls that circle the ferry as it leaves the pier, eager to catch a piece of simit bread. Saturated tones; charcoal greys and blacks match the deep grey, green rugged sea. Middle-aged men with thick stubble that fuel on cigerattes sit sipping cay and reading the paper.
A seat by the window offers a chance to ponder in peace before disembarking into the bustling metropolis.

I’d like to share with you my recent newborn photography shoot with little Jaxson George Taberer! He was born on on 31st July 2015 and the session took place when he was 17 days old. Mum Kerry and dad Liam were so helpful and patient during the shoot - they were very comfortable and easy to be around. Often found myself laughing at their jokes! I wanted to create a soft and delicate atmosphere with the natural light I had. I used my trusty pop up reflector that manipulates the light by bending and bouncing it. I just love the little details and the creases in Jaxson's newborn skin! What a pudding! Thank you for allowing me to capture Jaxson's first weeks in the world. If you've got a babe that you'd like me to capture those first moments of, then do get in touch! Head over to fiosh.weebly.com or find me on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter under #FIOSH. Please do not use my photos without my permission. (C) Fiona Palacioglu All rights reserved.
