Katara wondered how often he smiled, how many moments in his life so far had given him a reason? Katara ignored the way his smile made her stomach flutter, like it was something special towards her. Ever since Zuko had joined them, Katara had realized that something had shifted. That her anger was softening into something she didn't want to name. Zuko's touch was gentle, practiced like he no doubt had to do in his youth. Her cheeks darkened, so incredibly thankful that this particular moment was witnessed by none other than the insects and stars around them.

Dancing between nations was so vastly different, Katara knew how it worked in her tribe and Aang had once shown her a Fire Nation dance...although she wasn't entirely that was still in fashion. Zuko stepped up to her with ease that drew her attention to his face, "I've never been to a ball" But like anyone who dreamed, she had imagined what it was like. The grand dresses, the music, the way people would float together. Her gaze dropped to his feet as he began to move, mimicking the steps enough until she could lift her gaze without stumbling. She had a sneaking suspicion even if she had stumbled, that Zuko wouldn't of called her out on it. It took a few minutes until she felt confident enough to simply follow his lead, a laugh spilling from her lips at the unexpected twirl. Katara does tumble back into him, laughing again at his comment as she looked up at him. "Maybe it has something to do with my teacher"

“Hm, we’ll have to change that when the war is over, won’t we?” A promise of a future, Zuko thought. What was their future? He hoped against hope that Aang would be able to defeat his father, that they were all able to rebuild again. If that future came to pass, Zuko knew that he had a lot to atone for with what his family had done to the world. Would the world be able to forgive him as his newfound friend group had done? He hope so. His family's sins were not his own, after all. At least that was something he was pretty sure his Uncle had said to him at once point.

The urge to kiss her was there as Katara complimented him and he didn’t know what had caused him to do so, but Zuko found himself leaning down and pressing his mouth to hers ever so softly to hers anyway. Her mouth was so soft against his own and as he started to deepen the kiss, but then Zuko’s heart raced and his eyes suddenly widened as he realized what he was doing. The fire prince let Katara go gently before he stumbled back a step, holding out his hands as if he was afraid she might try to attack him. “I’m sorry!” His cheeks were redder than before as alarm was written all over his features. “I don’t know what came over me, that won’t happen again. It won’t. I …,” he trailed off, blubbering and embarrassed. What had he been thinking? Kissing Katara? Fuck, what had he just done?

"You might be sometimes, but then again, who isn't? Not that I'd have it any other way." She'd teased softly. Mai didn't exactly mind it much because at the end of it all, they'd make it work. Not that she was all that much easier. She knew her moods were a little harder to gauge, all things considered. "I feel the same way about you, Zuko. You understand me in ways not many do. And I appreciate that more than you know."

She feigned thought for a moment, as if she actually needed to. Though it was quite obvious that she didn't. "Yeah, that sounds like a plan. It'd definitely be nicer than being stuck here all day."

“Then it seems that we are on the same page, for once,” Zuko replied with a soft teasing smile. He offered her a hand, hoping she’d take it, but knowing he wouldn’t complain if she didn’t. That was the thing about Mai, knowing that she understood him and vice versa, it made all of the difficult times between them worth it.

“Mhm, tell me about it. Alright, that’s figured out then.” A passing guard was told his orders, directing them to make sure the kitchen staff knew where to bring dinner tonight. When they left, Zuko leaned back on his hands, saying, “You know, sometimes there are perks to being Fire Lord. Though the best perk is getting to share it all with you.”

Cheesy, a little too much, but Zuko could be a sap at times. That was one of the things that Mai had always brought out of him, even when she hadn’t known it.

as someone with a huge scar, I get how Zuko feels. It's taken me years to get to the point where I'll wear shirts that show it, (I have had multiple open hearts over the years so yeah), I used to not want to wear any sort of low neck shirt, now I've gotten to the point where I'm like whatever. and knowing he couldn't have hid it at all unless he had a hood on and even that was difficult, jeez, Ozai really didn't care about what he was doing to Zuko, did he? I'm sure he's had to fight a lot of insecurities because of it and I'm glad that he was able to overcome what his father did to him, because it can't have been easy being so young and also banished on top of it. Thank goodness too for Uncle Iroh stepping in and up as a father figure, because Zuko really needed that.

ZUKO in THE WATERBENDING MASTER

Despite being unable to fully utilize her seismic sense, Toph could still feel the change of his heartbeat through out their conversation through her palms. Toph recognized his curiosity towards her answer on why he had welcomed her with open arms , she felt it shift when he find her words amusing , but what distracted her from her focus to him was when he said that she had helped him far more than she knows. Toph felt her heart skip a beat at that — in an instant the earthbender was reminded of the familiar feeling she once had felt from sokka this caused her to instinctively averted her gaze to look down on her legs soaked in the fountain water in hopes of hiding the redness in her face. Mentally thinking that this effects were just because he was her soulmate. Not because she was interesed . Not Yet atleast . Eventually, when she regained her composure , the earthbender laughed at his attempt to defend his artistic talents. Toph dipped her left hand on the water && intentionally splashing a water towards him in amusement. The way he said that he was better than Sokka, made the earthbender want to tease him more. So she did, just because he is new in the gaang , doesn't mean she has the free pass from Toph. ❝ Oh ? Really ? You're comparing yourself with snoozles now ? That's so low coming from you , Sokka wasn't even that a great artist as of what i heard ❞ Toph let out a loud laughter at that , as her body relaxed , finding herself unconciously leaning against him , their shoulders brushing against one another

❝Yes. You've just realized now? I've been feeling it for so long , I couldn't even remember ! Ya , You should really feel sorry about it - ❞ Toph honestly answered , at first she didn't recognize the change on his mood but when her fingers brushed against his , toph's word of sarcasm halted a heavy silence stretched between them && the lighthearted mood had shifted. Toph's smirk faded when the question dropped , she had heard about the story of the fire nation's prince having a burn scar on his face from her friends. ❝ No . Nothing that I could remember ❞ She said quietly , her voice devoid of it's usual teasing edge. ❝ && If I did , I would personally hunt && beat the crap out of the person that caused that. ❞ Then it hit toph , like a lightning. She realized just now what it means , the pain that he had felt, the cruelty , the trauma. He was asking her about it , since in zuko's brain toph might had experienced it without knowing exactly what's going on since they were soulmates , luckly for zuko, toph didn't have to experience the hell , he had experienced. && Toph hope with this knowledge , Zuko could find comfort from it.

Upon having her revalation , the earthbender doesn't know what to do , she wasn't the best person to lean on nor someone who is good at comfortin , so toph did what she knew best in serious situations . ❝ Can I touch it? ❞ She asked carefully as if trying her best not to scare him.

Zuko let out a snorted huff of amusement, shaking his head at the implications from Toph in regarding Sokka. “It’s true, you can’t tell what his artwork is half the time. He could do with some practice.” Fortunately for Zuko, he’d had years of practice. Only because he’d been banished without an idea at first of what to do. When he’d been healing Zuko had taken to drawing the past Avatar’s in his notebook frequently, something that had become a bit of an unlikely hobby for a prince, one that he didn't care about back then. Some things you tossed aside once you were stranded from your home, even ideals you had grown up with.

Her response had him letting loose a long breath or relief. Thank Tui and La she hadn’t had to experience that pain too. No one should have to experience it, that’s what Katara had told him and yet it had happened to him and there was nothing he could’ve done to change it except face what had happened mentally head on. “Only you would try to take one up on my father, Toph,” Zuko replied with an amused chuckle, not really meaning to admit who had hurt him so badly, no one else knew the truth of that, only that he had been injured due to a disagreement. The less people that knew the truth the better, at least that’s what Zuko thought.

Not expecting her to ask to touch the scar, Zuko hesitated. Normally he never liked anyone to touch his face, even his Uncle when he’d been tending to him. But Toph was merely curious and she wouldn’t hurt him … Zuko found himself reaching out gently as he took her hand in his own and guided it to his face, letting her feel where the permanent scar was. No amount of healing or herbal teas had been able to get rid of it, Zuko knew it was deep rooted and just something he had to live with now.

“It’s not pretty looking, I’ll tell you that, but it’s not as bad as when it first occurred,” Zuko told her, knowing she would feel the rough edges of the scar. It was a little sensitive to the touch, why Zuko avoided touching his face as well, however, he found himself leaning into Toph’s touch, finding her fingers more soothing than he thought possible.

Toph leaned against the sliding doors that connects her room to the engawa that leads to the garden of the fire palace , her sightless eyes was closed shut as she listened to the drop of the rain , growing harsher as the minute passed by. There's a storm brewing && the earthbender enjoyed the momentarily peace it offers , not even bothered as the splash of the droplets hits her , soaking a portion of her clothes a bit.

Through the raging pitter patters of the rain through the earth && growing colder breeze of the air that she was hyper focused at , toph didn't realize the familiar footsteps approaching behind her , the only sign she was aware of zuko's presence is when , she felt his hands placed his red royal robe on her shoulder , his fingers lingering to make sure it was properly && comfortably wrapped around her. Toph could only snort at his actions. For someone who has servants , ready to do everything for him , the Fire Lord do love to serve one certain person. && Toph couldn't help but to relish at the attention. Not that she is going to say it to him openly.

Opening her eyes , she shifted her position so that she would be leaning against him instead of the sliding doors , her hand tugging tightly at the robe that was wrapped around her , preventing it from falling && to keep herself warm. The Silence continued to stretch between the two of them before toph broke it with a nudge on his side , a small smile on her face . A non verbal thank you was shared between them before toph spoke asking about his day. ❝ You're back early, hopefully none of your subjects had caused you to lose your mind today ❞ she teased

The meetings and courtly duties had never seemed like they were going to end that day. He was looking forward to the end of it when he could relax and spend time with those that he actually cared about. Not that he didn’t care about the people or his staff and advisors, because he did, but they weren’t his friends and they weren’t those that had become his family. Only Toph, Aang, Katara, Sokka and Suki had become the sort to be concerned over him, not the Fire Lord. And after having people argue with his all day over property lines and items that had of little value to him, it was nice to find the Earthbender lingering outside where it was cooler than inside that throne room.

It was raining, but Toph didn’t seem to mind it. No matter, Zuko found himself placing his robe around her anyway before he took a seat next to her. There was something comforting about Toph, even when she could be as bull headed as he was at times. She leaned into him and Zuko leaned some back, enjoying the quiet between them while it was there. There weren’t many people he could sit in silence with and be able to enjoy it, he was glad that Toph had become one of those people.

“Hm, they might have done a time or two, especially when a few of them were arguing over whose komodo chickens were whose. Who decided it was the Fire Lord’s job to figure that all out for them, hm?” He sighed softly before he offered her a smile, no matter the fact that there was tiredness behind it. “Please tell me your day was at least better than mine. Did you get up to anything fun in town? I heard there were some festival games still going on, I bet you’re good at those, eh, Toph?”

Zuko, ever the gentleman, at least when he wanted to be, tsked at Katara before he scooped her up into his arms. She was lighter than he expected given he knew she was quite muscular like he was and her current condition as well. He had an arm hooked under her knees and the other around her back as he held her close to his chest. “If you think I’m letting you walk around in this condition, you’re sadly mistaken.” Overbearing, he had definitely been that ever since the healer had told them their efforts hadn’t been in vain. Not that it had been an effort on Zuko’s part. He could almost see the annoyed look he imagined was flitting across Katara’s face right now as he carried her to their chambers.

They had been lounging out in the gardens, enjoying the cooling affect of the evening and now it was time to actually wind down, of course he wasn’t going to let her wander about the palace in her state. “Don’t worry, dear. A few more months of this and then you’ll be begging me to carry you again regardless, hm?” His mouth tilted upward and when he reached their bedchambers, Zuko plopped her down gently on their bed. Theirs, that still seemed something of a marvel to the Fire Lord. “Do you need anything? Tea? A book? A sewing kit of some sort?” Zuko asked as he stood upright again to look her over.

“Sokka!” While he had been enjoying the act in the moment, seeing the hickey bruising on his skin on the side of his neck brought alarm to the young Fire Lord immediately. He slapped a hand there, wondering if there was something he could use to hide it while he had his meeting. “I have a meeting to attend to in a few hours, you know,” he grumbled at the Water Tribesman, though he wasn’t really upset with him. No one knew they were sneaking around, so no one had to know who the hickey was from. But still, it wasn’t seemly for a Fire Lord to be walking around looking like that. Maybe he had enough time to spare now to rid himself of the mark, but he was planning revenge in his head. Marching over to the other man, Zuko managed to grab Sokka by the arm before he could even try to escape. “No way, where do you think you’re going, Mister?” He wagged a finger at him saying, “It’s my turn to leave marks on you, come here.”

she thinks it's odd how little the palace gardens have changed over the years, but there's a part of her that warms at the familiarity. while mai thought the palace itself was a little boring after having seen it so often, she doesn't think she'll ever grow tired of the greenery that was kept alive in the courtyard. it was a nice place to think. she had far too many thoughts swirling in her head as of late. "don't think i'm too hard to spot among all this," mai remarks as she twists a fallen leaf in her hands. she'd wanted some time to herself, but she didn't mind zuko's presence.

out of everyone currently residing in the royal fire nation palace, his presence was the only she didn't mind ( and the only one she couldn't say no to, really ). she lets out a short breath, then continues, "there's not much to say. my father's not a good man. he never was." something zuko knew well. "he got what he deserved."

“No, but you weren’t in any of the rooms or the library, so it seemed the garden was a good last ditch effort to find you,” Zuko replied with upward tilt of a smirk with his mouth. If Mai didn’t want him there, she could all but kick him out and he would go. Zuko hoped that wouldn’t be the case, however, he wouldn’t bother her unless she wanted him there to take everything awful off of her mind.

“Maybe not, yet Aang decided my father should get to live despite everything he’d done. We all deserve second chances, even if we’re awful.” Zuko wished he could make things better for her, but he understood, maybe more than anyone else in the palace. Zuko’s own family was quite messed up, if not for finding his mother recently, he had felt he hadn’t had much to fall back on, even more so with his Uncle back in Ba Sing Se. “That he did,” Zuko finally agreed with a nod. “How has Tom-Tom been? That kid has been through quite the ringer and he hasn’t even hit five yet.”

Zuko is an exemplary father. He knows his children love the sea, and while Mom Katara is still sleeping or resting, he takes their little ones—who have the habit of waking up early just like him—to the beach. Because when they are on vacation, Katara needs to rest; he believes she has every right to, so he takes care of everything.

If the kids want to go for a swim at 7:00 AM, he takes them to the beach and then heads back after about an hour to prepare breakfast for Katara.

Zuko is literally the man of the house, in the best possible way.
