āShowoff.ā
hello, the fact that people are so quick to forgive Iroh, who spent the majority of his life committing war crimes, and did not actually reflect and begin loving peace till after his son died which was when Zuko was at least seven, but are not so quick to forgive azula, a 14 year old girl groomed into being a child soldier, has a very obvious mental illness, and was in fact committing war crimes because she was being emotionally abused by her father.Ā
āazula was crazy, azula was evil, azula was blah blah blah.ā Azula was FOURTEEN. She was fourteen and considered irredeemable by her own uncle. The same uncle who offered nurture to her brother. She was living her life terrified that once her usefulness to Ozai ran out, she would be hurt the same way Zuko was. she was fourteen, and people are quick to forgive her imperialist uncle who spent more than her life committing war crimes and being a successful war general, rather than showing sympathy to a mentally ill, 14 year old girl, who was a child soldier.Ā
in the same vein, if you are able to find azula redeemable but not jet and hama, then thereās an issue.Ā
yes, azula is a 14 year old, mentally ill child, groomed to be a child soldier. she IS a war criminal. she IS an imperialist. those things were because of her circumstances, but she is those things.
jet is a traumatized child of war. hama was a prisoner of war. jetās entire family was killed when he was 8. hama was a target of genocide. jet and hama were both traumatized by the fire nationās imperialism, and were driven to the point of fighting off the imperialists. the same sympathy that is extended to azula, can and should be extended to the brown child of war, and the brown prisoner of war.
finally home from my doctorās appointment so i will address the clowning in the notes later, but hereās more: the entire narrative of atla is written from a pro-imperialistic stance.Ā
While the show does criticize the fire nation for being imperialistic and hurting the rest of the world, the pro-imperialistic undertones are really very prominent.Ā
A big part of this is by portraying violent resistance against the fire nation as bad. By portraying Jet as bad for trying to drive out the fire nation. By portraying Hama as bad for imprisoning the fire nation. I, as a latina, and a desi do not think theyāre evil for resorting to violence! peaceful against someone that is using violence as an oppressor just places people in danger! and it is a common notion within countries that have a history of colonizing that peaceful protest is better than violent protest. but protest in general is villanized by those in positions of power, who want to continue to actively oppress people.
Another big part of the pro-imperialistic stance of atla is theĀ āconstantly reaffirming that fire nation citizens are not responsible.ā They are responsible. It doesnāt matter that they are citizens, that they are fed propaganda, and that they are still just people. They live in a society that profits off of the colonization of the rest of the world, and they join the army, and all this other stuff. They are complicit. They are also responsible. They are not as directly responsible as the generals and the leaders of the Fire Nation, but they are responsible as well. The constant reaffirming of making them not directly responsible is a tactic to sympathize with the imperialism, to sympathize with the colonization.Ā
The lack of responsibility placed on the Fire Nation citizens is a tool to sympathize with imperialists! It is a direct affirmation of the pro-imperialistic stance of atla, and why itās written so that there is sympathizing for the Fire Nation citizens and none for the brown violent resistors!
iām not even fucking joking anymore, iām seriously at my limit.Ā
if you donāt think iroh is a war criminal, donāt interact with this post. if you think jet and hama are irredeemable donāt interact with this post. if you donāt understand that fire nation civilians are complicit with the war to enforce the pro-imperialistic undertones of atla donāt interact with this post.Ā
here is a masterpost of literally ever war crime committed in atla.
clowning and itās blocking on sight šššš

The first photo is a tumblr reply from user @gaul-the-unmitigatedā saying: Itās not that it was bad that jet and Hama were fighting back the issue was jet was going to flood and kill a village full of civilians and Hama tortured people. Both of those are also war crimes. The series did say that the fire nation needed to be fought but these two committed war crimes on civilians. Theyāre not irredeemable but itās still not justified.
The second photo is theĀ āI am lookingā meme edited to have no face features. The original caption is edited to sayĀ āI canāt.ā On the top and bottom there is captions that sayĀ āI canāt.ā Across the middle there is a snapchat comment sayingĀ āI cant.āĀ End ID]
i know both of those are war crimes. i literally am saying that the war crimes they commit are written to drive atlaās pro-imperialist stance! please think!

The first photo is a tumblr reply from user @jospeh-mr-video-game-boy saying: I really hate when people say that iroh or azula were commiting war crimes. They werenāt. They were part of a war yes. But they didnāt take part in the genocide of the airbenders, nor did either of them actually participate in burning the earth Kingdom to Ash. The war crimes in atla were the capture of the water benders, the destruction of the airbenders and their culture and the burning of the cities. Both characters participated in war yes. Both can redeem themselves and iroh is trying to do that from the beginning of the show. Iroh cannot stop a war by himself even though he is royalty. It doesnāt work like that and I wish people would stop saying it does. He helps zuko so that zuko doesnāt follow the same path of war
The second photo is a cartoony picture of a person with the caption āYouā on it. Above their head is a brick that is being thrown with the caption: āThe point.ā End ID]
My point is that, neither of them committed war crimes and are therefore both redeemable. Since atlas resurgence people keep finding iroh problematic and some people tried to cancel him for some reason. Most of the antagonist characters in atla are designed to be redeemable. Iām not saying azula is redeemable nor am I blaming her for her own mental state. She is still responsible for trying to kill multiple people even if she is 14 and no doubt iroh in a war scenario also tried to kill people. But even so both attempt this on people who they would consider enemy soldiers i.e not a war crime. Neither of them threaten civilians.
google exists. you should google what constitutes as a war crime. but since your head is too far up your ass to to that here is a photo of the Rome statute.
[Image ID: A photo from the Rome statue on what constitutes war crimes. The photo says:
Article 8^2
War Crimes
1. The Court shall have jurisdiction in respect of war crimes in particular when committed as part of a plan or policy or as part of a large-scale commission of such crimes.
2. For the purpose of this Statute,Ā āwar crimesā means:
(a) Grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949, namely, any of the following acts against persons or property protected under the provisions of the relevant Geneva Convention:
(i) Wilful killing;
(ii) Torture of inhuman treatment, including biological experiments;
(iii) Wilfully causing great suffering, or serious injury to body or health;
(iv) Extensive destruction (highlighted in green) and appropriation of property, not justified by military necessity and carried out unlawfully and wantonly;End ID]
here is also a masterlist of all the canon war criminals in atla šš

so first, weāre gonna be defining what a war criminal is. here is a free resource you can use to see what is categorized as war crimesĀ ššĀ

Mako is honestly such a good man like..yeah heās a lil clueless and cheating isnāt good but like! He loves his friends so much and would literally do anything for them and he did a fucking great job raising Bolin. Like this boy slept under his desk because he thought it would make things awkward with his ex gfs (also his two closet friends) staying at the same place as them. He wrote Korra letters including pretty much every detail of the day like. This boy is not mysterious or cool he literally just has ZERO social skills whatsoever but he still cares about people so much and I just. I love mako.
