Hi, I’m REALLY mad right now at this stupid website so please bear with me.

 A certain artist (based in the Philippines might I add) recently made a J.CO (Indonesian donut restaurant chain) gijinka recently, and people accused them of whitewashing their gijinka because the character’s skin was too bright. I, as an Indonesian, am seriously offended. 

Not by the gijinka, 

but by the masses of people who are being offended ON MY BEHALF FOR THE WRONG REASONS.  The most insulting thing about this whole situation is that this website fucking auto-assumes that all brightly colored characters have been whitewashed and that this is always a bad thing and racist because of how things are in the West. Hi. Indonesia is not the United States. Indonesia is not a country in Europe. Indonesia is a multicultural society in Asia made up mostly of Southeast Asians, Melanesians, and East Asians. You can NOT apply the same exact sensitivities and narrative to Indonesia as you can in the West.  …Let me give you a quick rundown:

 Racism in Indonesia is not always about about a white skinned race oppressing a darker skinned race. If anything, it’s more to do with Xenophobia and Religion.  Following up on that, here’s the shocker:  The DISCRIMINATED MINORITY in Indonesia has a lighter skin color than the PRIVILEGED MAJORITY.  East Asians, mostly Chinese, who generally have brighter skin tones than your regular Southeast Asian person, are regular targets of hate speech, discrimination, racism, and even a 1998 genocide that still strikes fear and opens up old wounds in their hearts upon mention.  PLEASE GET THAT INTO YOUR DENSE SKULL.  Indonesia has serious racial problems, but you can NOT automatically assume everything as from a western country perspective.  To do so is seriously, seriously racist.

 The intention was “right” from your perspective, but please. Do your research, and don’t automatically always assume that light skin is whitewashing. You’re touching on a VERY sensitive and often radically different subject depending on which nation you are talking about.  It’s INSULTING to your fellow PoCs.  I feel insulted. I feel like this website just made a unanimous decision for me because I’m either too “uneducated” “uninformed”, “tolerant” or WHATEVER the fuck you think of Indonesians to feel offended for myself. This website made me think that the Indonesian restaurant chain CAN ONLY be run by Southeast Asians when there are hundreds, if not thousands of East Asian J.CO employees whose lives and stories, and struggle against discrimination you’ve just invalidated just because of your westernized view of racism.  AND TO TOP IT ALL OFF,  THE ARTIST YOU’RE MAD AT IS A PoC FROM THE SAME REGION AS INDONESIA THEMSELVES, (the Philippines) AN ARTIST WHO HAD NO INTENTION OF WHITEWASHING. WHO JUST SAW REALLY NICE COLORS THAT WORKED AND THOUGHT IT WAS COOL. WHO KNOWS FULL WELL THE STRUGGLE SOUTHEAST ASIA HAS HAD AGAINST EUROPE IN THE COLONIAL PERIOD.  IT’S AS IF YOU’RE TRYING TO LECTURE A VICTIM ON WHY THEY SHOULD FEEL VICTIMIZED INSTEAD OF UNDERSTANDING OUR STORY.                  WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU, TUMBLR.

Liberated Life

As of 29th April I was finally free from the sinister clutches of Semester 2. 

I’m really excited for tomorrow, because modules for next semester will be updated on IVLE and I can finally plan my modules early in advance. 

Plan for now would be: 

2 Econs mods - EC3303 (Econometrics I) and EC2102 (Macro Analysis I) 

SPANISH!!!!! I am so so so excited for next semester because I’m going to challenge myself to take up a new language! :D LAS1201, here I come!!

South Asia Studies - This is to clear a requirement, but if it clashes with any module I’d be really sad. It also depends on who’s going to be lecturing it next semester as well. 

And finally, probably a GES module (Singapore Studies pillar). Not sure about this because there’s quite a number available to take but I’m really picky when it comes to GE modules. 

Sigh, I don’t know why, but planning makes me really happy and hopeful. Because the full force of the next semester can’t be felt LOL

half a report card

Midterms results are mostly out, and so far I’ve only done badly for one module, which is, fortunately, a module I can S/U. Sigh. Times like these I REALLY hate how economics majors are just out there to wreck the bell curve and make your life legit miserable. Whining here coz no one will read it much haha 

EC2101: 76/100 for mids which is very very unexpected but I think they were very kind in the marking. They put more emphasis on workings than answers and I haven’t checked my paper yet but I bet I have wrong answers with at least some marks awarded lel. Quite a surprise coz this mod is competitive af (people from other facs take it as an unrestricted mod so u can imagine how it’s like)

Hopefully this 75th percentile position stays with me until finals and I can finally get my long awaited A-/A. go for it nic!!

GET1023: 38/40 I love this mod so it doesn’t take a lot of effort to remember the readings and details but it’s starting to get a bit too theoretical economically (Marx, Ricardo, Adam Smith etc) lol... I was surprised (again) at my results coz my essay writing skills are quite rusty and every question was like 6mark 8mark ahaha but anywho still glad af for my 2nd 75th percentile this sem! Idk if it’s my 75th percentile since starting uni coz for EC2303 the prof didn’t release rankings. Who cares haha got my A anyway 

EC2104: dread mod from hell but i WILL STILL study for it even if the returns aren’t good. 8/15 for the paper and the cohort average was 8.9-9, meaning most people got 9 marks. Quite a downer especially since it was the first piece of results I got (it’s pretty easy to run scripts through a scantron, entire paper was MCQ) and made me feel really scared for the rest. 

Can’t wait for this semester to end  o m g this sem has been really terrible in general but I know the subsequent sems will just get worse....

i‘m just really excited at the prospect of learning Spanish next semester to fulfil my UE requirements + try to score myself an immersion trip to Valencia so maybe I’ll stick around more here next sem.

After looking at my results,

Can I now change my url to secondclasshonours? Just kidding. First class is the ultimate goal but the sooner I get it, the better. Had a lot of regrets this semester but it’s too late to feel bad about it - and of course I did do quite a number of things right too, but my CAP of 4.2 will not show it. 

I got A for my stats mod, A- for my intro econs mod, followed by a B and two B+’s. It’s not too shoddy for a freshman, but I have a feeling a lot of us got such scores. 

I promise to do better next semester and work to get rid of my bad habits which include:

1) Distractedness during study

2) Laziness (generally)

3) Not paying attention in lessons.

Hopefully that would give me a much needed boost to survive 2017 which will see me through my last freshman semester and first year 2 semester. I’m honestly really afraid.

2 more papers to the end of finals.

I can’t believe one semester is nearly over. Terrified of stats and Global studies (again, nothing new) and they happen to be the exact last 2 papers before I can officially slam the Sem 1 chapter shut. 

I didn’t do too bad for midterms; but they don’t issue grades for midterms other than GL1101e which I got a B+ for. For stats (EC2303) it was 83/100 with a cohort median of 61.2 marks so I’m hoping that saves me if I don’t do as well in finals. 

I got an above average score in GER1000 but knowing the bell curve it won’t be very kind?? and the finals paper just rly sucked lel not hoping for anything more than a B+ for it honestly. What a waste of time this mod was. 

(Actually, pre-allocated mods are all wastes of time zz) 

EC1101e was quite bad (fell into the most common score range so I’m betting I got a B for midterms) but the finals paper felt alright to me so I hope the MCQ doesn’t have too many careless mistakes because I always don’t notice certain things in the question =_= Hoping for a B+ at least because I need a B- minimum to declare econs as major. 

Haven’t updated this space at all due to schedules and shit but man I am trying. I promise myself here that I’ll work harder for Sem 2 and learn from my Sem 1 mistakes.

And that was how my recess week went. Study break day on Saturday but managed to do some sums while waiting for my turn to check my eyes at Owndays (yes I finally got the specs I need after 3 years)

Finished my readings ahead of time (next week is week 7, and I’m currently on the second half of my Week 9 readings) and managed to do stats everyday. The stats mod makes me terrified because of the stuff competition and the smart people all taking it :( midterms for it is tomorrow, I hope I don’t waste my one week effort…

As you can see the following week is going to be super tough too, especially the day where I have a test right after my sister’s bachelorette night (listed as bridesmaid meetup because we’re all discussing wedding details)
