calmness stalks the city like a plague. it’s something he never thought he dislike. fisk may be gone but other criminals take his place one after another, each one more frustratingly in control than the last. soon one might actually take the kingpin’s place but matt won’t sleep until he’s behind bars just like his predecessor. he aches to be on the streets tonight, leather and spandex holding his body together like a make shift split for one large broken man. he watches foggy afar, they talk now but it’s not the same. it’s obvious, to karen most especially. he feels alone. so does she. neither of them admit it these days. lies are so much pretty to tell and easier to say no matter what dangerous web they weave.

    ‘ if it’s late enough your’e telling your boss to go home, that probably means you should too. ‘

       “I can’t, there are some more things I need to take care of. They need to be done before tomorrow, but that doesn’t mean you can’t leave and honestly, you should.”

The words rolled easily from her lips, as if they were true, the past few weeks turned her into a good liar. A part of her hated it, just as much as she hated what she became, but she knew lying made it easier. Being alone and haunted by the memories was already bad enough, she didn’t want to face it in every second of the days. Karen was not yet ready to face the truth, the responsibilities and the consequences. And she wondered if she ever would be. Matt and Foggy got her out of trouble, by getting herself in this very messed up situation it seemed as if she wasn’t grateful enough for what she did. As if she didn’t value their help and didn’t mind to throw it all away.

                    Five years ago, I was escorting a nuclear engineer out of Iran. Somebody                     shot out my tires near Odessa. We lost control, went straight over a cliff. I                     pulled us out. But the Winter Solider was there. I was covering my engineer                     so he shot him straight through me. Soviet slug. No rifling.

     It was strange going to the office every day after what she have done. Seeing the two man every day, who already pulled her out of a mess once. It was not fair what she was doing. She was putting them in danger, or at least so she felt and she couldn’t shake that feeling off. But at the same time, she felt somewhat safer with them around. And Karen put their safety in danger for her own well being, that was selfish and she was aware, but she couldn’t help it. She needed those few hours of safety.

   As the night came closer and closer, fear was slowly creeping back into her heart. It was the same everyday and by now she almost got used it - which didn’t make it any easier. Foggy already left and now it was just Matt and her in the office. She pushed her chair back and walked over to Matt’s office, softly knocking on the door, before entering.

              “Matt, it’s already late. You should go home.”
