BOTAN:

I imagine Kagemitsu really adored Botan a lot. 100% pure platonic adoration. However, he’s also 100% aware that, as a shikigami, she won’t be around forever. But, until that day, he is going to protect her unconditionally.

First and foremost, she is a shikigami and she is sacred, being one of the only beings powerful enough to seal the Orochi. As his duty as protector, he must protect her from anything, even if that means protecting her from emotional ties that may compromise her. Kagemitsu calls her his “precious comrade” which has a whole host of connotations. First, it suggests that she is invaluable to their organisation / cause, “comrade” denoting that she is a colleague. However, “comrade” suggests strong friendships and bonds not limited to a work colleague relationship.

Then you’ve got to think about the line, “the summoning spell takes a long time. This is why the Kumo family act as guard.” This suggests to me that the Kumo family have been guarding Botan for, well, for as long as the Orochi has been around. And if Botan has been around since Hirari was young, then she’s known or, at least known of, Kagemitsu for the same amount of time as, Kagemitsu and Hirari are the same age.

Then there’s the bit where Sasaki literally says, “the three of us are like a family.” This makes me think that perhaps the thoughts are reciprocated by Sasaki, Kagemitsu and Botan. If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to cry as Botan would probably think of everyone Kumo as family.

EDIT: THEN THERE’S THAT MOMENT IN DNW WHEN BOTAN SAYS, “LONG AGO, THERE WAS SOMEONE WHO SERVED AS MY SHIELD. I WANT TO RETURN THE FAVOUR. I WANT TO PROTECT THEIR BLOODLINE.” I’M NOT CRYING AT PLATONIC BOTAN AND KAGEMITSU YOU ARE.
