On set back in the final week of animation
Sound mixing was completed last week with our super talented sound designer, Zoltan Juhasz! We were also lucky on this production to have not one, but two brilliant composers, Jessica Jones and Tim Morrish who created all of the original music for the film.
Throwback to the many weeks spent developing the animatic. My storyboard panels started out as nice coloured-in postcards and ended up as quick, messy thumbnails scribbled in a notebook.
We’ve finished shooting!!! Our last shot was set up by cinematographer Simona on Sunday and I animated it on Sunday night and now we are FINISHED!! Just a few hectic weeks of post-production to go and then the film, officially now titled FISHWITCH, will be screened in London as part of the NFTS Grad Show before being submitted to festivals. Nearly there now!
When is the release for Once Upon An Iceberg/Fishwitch planned?
It will be finished next month and then we will start sending it to festivals so hopefully it will travel a bit and people can have a chance to see it :) Then I think it's usually a two-year festival circuit before grad films can be put online.
Timelapse from a few months ago.
Some other elements to be shot separately and composited into shots by our VFX team.Â
Here’s the amazing fishing boat made by the art department team! It’s mostly blue foam and balsa wood with lots of lovely detailing. In the bottom picture you can also see the beautiful weathered looking sails which will be attached.Â
Photos by Becky Weston and DeNi Santana who worked on creating this awesome piece.
As well as animating the two puppets, we also have some composite elements that will be added on top of the main animation. These are being shot under a rostrum camera setup up on glass and include clouds, lightning and some small sea creatures.
We are really thrilled to have the characters for our film voiced by Natalia Tena (Harry Potter, Game of Thrones) and her boyfriend and Molotov Jukebox partner, Sam Apley.
Pictured above with some of the team (l-r): Helene Sifre (producer), Jenna Jovi (screenwriter), Jessica Jones (composer), Zoltan Juhasz (sound designer), Nat, Sam, myself (director), Tim Morrish (composer) and Andonis Trattos (editor).

Here’s a preview of a prop that is included briefly in the film. Hmm... bears resemblance to a certain merman...
It’s only on screen for a few frames so I was originally going to make it out of card but got carried away and ended up sculpting it out of polymer clay. It took me a whole day to realise that I left out an ulna on one arm. Whoops!
Lovely bit of ice for you there! Production designer Lizzie Osborne worked with our art department volunteers to make this gorgeous ice effect from fibreglass, resin and a cocktail of fake snow, glue and glitter for the frosted effect. Pretty convincing!
Timelapse of myself and Simona setting up a shot. As you can see, Derek the merman has gotten himself in a bit of a tangle.
Our VFX team Boyan and Robin recorded some bubbles and particles with our cinematographer Simona, to use for compositing over the animation. Can’t wait to see it all come together!
Some of the lurvely props made by the talented art department team. Here we have two of Tootega’s blankets, some candles and a couple of lichen-covered buckets. The polar bear blanket even has tiny claws!Â
