devastating: artist who has not practiced fundamentals enough to execute high concept idea eats shit

For context me and my friends did a slide show party and as part of it I decided to explain the plot of two book I read this year so with out further ado I present:

THE WORST MOST BARE BONES PLOT SYNOPSIS WITH A TON OF SPOILERS FOR GDCG!!!!

Kse tries to buy merch and gets summoned to an another world where he immediately gets thrown into a job application and by that I mean a death train…he’s thrown onto a death train

Luckily he still gets his merch!!! Which allows him to access the web because basically he got summoned to work at the scp foundation except ghost stories instead of scp beings and stuff!!

He passes obviously and he chooses to not quit because he wants to go back to his world which is safe and completely ghost storyless unlike this world we’re even as a civilization he’ll always be in danger and the only way to do that is to gather enough points to buy a wish potion!!

Big problem: he’s a coward who HATESSS scary stuff. Unfortunately he’s quite stoic so him speed running every darkness/ghost story to get out faster just makes the higher ups really want him to work for them because he’s really good at his job.

Unfortunately his team that he was put into starts to uh…disappear one by one due to various reasons and so with his rising position he catches the eyes of both executives and signs a contract with one

Unfortunately it’s time for ANOTHER DEATH TRAINNNN in which actually afterwards he ends up going missing for a month due to a DIFFERENT darkness but it’s ok because this one’s friendly in a way almost…

He gets help and escapes but now he’s violated contract and can’t be considered an employee anymore meaning no access to wish potion~

So to not have to reapply and start over also some other reason he signs a contract with the OTHER executive and is now a spy infiltrating the government for information on an s-rank/abysall level difficulty

I don’t remember stuff happens and he gets the wish potion!!!

It fails :(

He realizes he’s not human/ in a human vessel therefore he starts melting…fleshily

To save his life he resigns a contract with the first executive aka Ms. awful-evil-horrible-person!!

He gets stuck as a mindless flesh blob in a scary costume for six months :(

He reawakens and gets some workers rights somehow I lowkey forgot again

He’s working again in a different department for now

Ummmm I’m skipping a lot they get sucked into a darkness and kse turns normal again but it was a dream!!!

That WAS the abyssal darkness the 2nd executive is looking for

They make deals and plans build a team and tinker around in that darkness entering and exiting it a bunch and kse starts to figure out a way to make a proper wish potion because it turns out daydream inc fucked it up and made it more of a monkeys paw thing that’s whatever you actually desire

There are people stuck in it so they free the darkness!!!

It’s sort of fails :(

We need to go back in to make the potion and to save the others trapped in it

Honestly there’s a lot here but I skipped soooo much that I simply can’t explain it soooo

We do a ritual to get rid of Ms. awful-evil-horrible-person and Kim soleum makes the wish potion gets to go home!!! (Ignore the plot line where he wasn’t human it’s complicated)

If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.

1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.

2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.

3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.

4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.

5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.

Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.

A fun thing about fiction with large casts of characters is that sometimes you'll have a Spicy Bananas moment where every single character has an identical yet wildly atypical experience of some very mundane thing, and slowly you realise that the author isn't Making A Point, they just think that's normal.
