Linguistic observation

In German, to have an emotion (the emotion being the accusative object) relates to a particular moment, while the adjective of the emotion (in relation to the speaker) refers to a more general, permanent sense. Example: - Ich habe Angst (vor)… [I “have fear (of)”] - Ich bin ängstlich [I’m scared] Here, “Angst vor” refers to a specific thing, like for example spiders or an exam, and “ängstlich” relates to the general feeling of fear. That is why, when you want to express love but don’t want that to feel like too much commitment, you say “Ich hab dich lieb” [I hold you dear] instead of “Ich liebe dich” [I love you].
