i would be a lot more secure in my gender identity as a trans man if it wasnt for hockey. in every other aspect of my life i am comfortable in my identity until i walk into an ice rink and suddenly i am a woman and ill die if you make me go in the mens locker room and i need to play womens hockey and i feel significant pride in being a woho player

they need to make one of those obscure gender labels for this like yeah im sports gender fluid.

Tinfoil hat time. The pattern I think I'm seeing regarding levels of feminine presentation in women's hockey.

Knighter. When she's doing PWHL events, she dresses one way. It's feminine, yeah, but not over the top in formality, makeup is minimal. When she's doing USA Hockey events, she dresses way more conservatively formal in femininity with makeup dialed up. Like a stylist is definitely involved, or at least a different one.

She's also written about femininity expectations in the sport, which makes it more jarring. But we have at least some idea of her thoughts on the issue beyond just what we see.

To most people, Olympics level is definitely higher on the status than club. So having appearance standards makes sense to them, I get it. It also makes me think that the players who want to dress even a little bit masc are not gonna if their endorsement deals and other financials are on the line.

Anyway, long winded way of saying it's patriarchy and misogynistic expectations, but there's something specific in the difference between PWHL and USA Hockey. Someone is making them dress like this. They look a little uncomfortable to me.

(I do not know enough about the ins and outs of this, or if or how this works among Hockey Canada or other national team orgs, so I'm not gonna.)
