my post about helping kids unlearn sexism blew up so I'm coming back to say the way I work with kids all goes back to my fundamental belief that hate is learned, people are good, and we can always get better.
I do not accept doomerism about the fundamental nature of humans. we are social creatures and we want human connection. we can and will form bonds with anyone and anything. kids want to be kind and happy. we all want to be kind and happy. hate is taught. it can be untaught.
kids are very smart and perceptive. they know what kind of behavior makes them feel good and what doesn't. they know who is safe and who isn't. they want to emulate the behavior they like. all the hype about role models isn't made up for college essays. even if you're not actively going out of your way to deprogram kids, being an example of a good person can do so much.
be kind. be gentle. treat children with respect. they will notice.

good thing nobody saw that (said directly to someone who definitely saw it)
It's not a virtue to focus totally on your own peace and disregard problems around you. Ironically, it's also not a virtue to stew in your own anxiety.
People online like "I will NOT seek peace while there is suffering around me! I will inflict suffering on myself as long as there is pain in the world!"
Cool, that's useless.
It's one thing if you say "As long as there are hungry people in my community, I'll stay engaged with the food bank," (which probably will actually comfort you because you'll be surrounded by people working for a solution!) but for a lot of people it's "As long as there is suffering in the world, I will self-flagellate with sad Instagram reels," and you might as well not.
I love you Ghibli movies I love every single one of your plots and storytelling and animation and characters and each careful stroke for each frame. I love you My Neighbour Totoro and how it tells you that magic exists in life whether or not you are able to see it. I love you Kiki's Delivery Service and how it tells you that the journey to adulthood is not always a smooth flight. I love you Spirited Away and how it tells you that you must stay true to yourself and not to give over to greed. I love you Howl's Moving Castle and how it tells you that self confidence and love will lead you to new places. I love you Castle In The Sky and how it tells you that nature can coexist with technology without human interruption. I love you Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind and how it tells you that nature is not evil, just provoked. I love you Ponyo and how it tells you that it is important for life to keep a balance between humanity and sea. I love you The Boy And The Heron and whatever the fuck is going on there. I love you Ghibli animation of trees swaying and the ocean's waves and blades of grass in sunny scenes and rain pattering down onto the street and the ever-graceful movements of characters no matter what emotions they are feeling it shows that they are all always beautiful.

A woodblock style piece I did a few years ago. It's about time I did a new version of this 🤔
"Padmé was an ineffective centrist" Padmé was such a thorn in the side of the far right that three successive movies had fascists trying to kill her, specifically, for getting in the way.
If fascists keep trying to kill you, I don't think you're ineffective! And I really doubt you're a centrist!
it's so hardcover –> we're so paperback
