the contrast between these is completely life changing
Idk where this murder mystery renaissance started, but I'm glad it's producing a story about a flock of sheep that are obsessed with the genre trying to solve a murder. Just. Peak cinema tbh
Tell me why I almost cried like 3 different times watching The Sheep Detectives??
before the fun-looking silly sheep detective movie hits the theaters and you all run to see it, expecting a silly sheep detective movie (and hugh jackman), here's what you're getting into:
Hugh Jackman on BBC Radio 1 for The Sheep Detectives May 5, 2026
- Project Hail Mary, chapter 22
had me cackling out loud
Mood
THE MARTIAN • PROJECT HAIL MARY
The Martian: A5 • liners STABILO point 88 & Centropen
Project Hail Mary: A4 • liners STABILO point 88, Centropen; Pilot roller gel pen; Koh-i-Noor Polycolor pencils
I would like to share the story of a very understandable but unfortunate mistake i made at work recently
So I'm weeding our ancient and terrible collection of children's books for the first time in possibly ever, and I'm making a decision about a book about migrant workers by Sandra Weiner, called Small Hands, Big Hands. And I'm not 100% sure and I go to just see if there's anything out there about this book's being notable in any way so I do an open web search for
"small hands big hands weiner"
And then I look at my results for a moment
and then at last I somberly add to the end of my search, "BOOK"
I have one like that:
In mathematics, you often consider the two-dimensional plane - you know, the idealised flat two-dimensional object that extends infinitely - which can be real or complex (doesn't matter what that means)
On this, you can perform a mathematical operation called a "blow-up" (resulting in a more complicated geometry)
I needed to look up a formula related to this, so I confidently typed into the search bar:
"Blow up real plane"
The results were not what I wanted and I am not sure if I'm on a terror watchlist now.
Scientist here. There are a lot of immunocompromised mouse strains available, and one of them is the Swiss nude mouse. Coworker who was presenting couldn’t remember the exact genotyping differences so she opened a browser and quickly googled “Swiss nude”.
Never seen someone close a browser window so fast in my life.
never related to authors being like "childhood is such a blessed innocent time", catch me with that jane eyre shit like "such dread as children only can feel" and "I then sat with my doll on my knee til the fire got low, glancing round occasionally to make sure nothing worse than myself haunted the shadowy room"
"Adults can change their circumstances; children cannot. Children are powerless, and in difficult situations they are the victims of every sorrow and mischance and rage around them, for children feel all of these things but without any of the ability that adults have to change them. Whatever can take a child beyond such circumstances, therefore, is an alleviation and a blessing."
I find this passage from the Mary Oliver essay "Staying Alive" very poignant and true.
I’ve seen some more idiotic readers go “Mark and Grace are just the same people.”
if they’re the same people, explain this:
Mark Watney: *at any minor inconvenience * FUCKING FU— Ryland Grace: *world-ending, life-threatening news* holy moly
that post that's like "if Hamlet and Othello swapped plays, their tragedies would've been avoided" except it's for Andy Weir protagonists
Mark Watney would've been banging on Stratt's door demanding he be tested for the Hail Mary mission, resume in hand before she had time to finish her first speech on the matter
Rocky and Ryland Grace working together would get off of Mars before NASA even realized Grace was alive, Grace would just roll up like "oh hey guys! look! I made a friend, he gave me a ride home!"
andy weir and his little space vloggers
where’s that one meme that’s like “guy who swears at every minor inconvenience vs guy who says whoopsie when he makes the biggest mistake of his life” bc that’s just mark watney and ryland grace
2 little guys in similar situations, but they're polar opposite in personality and how they got into space
Andy Weir's subgenre of science fiction being "what if everything works out despite the odds and caring for others is the thing that saves the world?" makes so much sense when you find out he's a diehard Doctor Who fan
