I love that Leverage really goes out of it’s way to show us that just because you break the ‘rules’, it doesn’t mean you’re breaking the rules. Rules and laws and society are all made up, at the end of the day, and all you really have is your own moral compass and sense of justice; is this just to you? Is it right? Should it be OK for companies to put people in insurmountable debt for the rest of their lives just because our medical care is so expensive in this modern day and age? No law or rule should change what you know in your heart is right and wrong, and I think that’s the key thing that makes someone a good person in my eyes.
#there was a time when parker wouldn’t have noticed, #not because she lacked the capacity to care, #but because she had narrowed herself, #to stay alive she cut off as many unnecessary things as possible, #watching her get them all back, #is one of the glories of this show (via @seananmcguire)
Leverage hands down has the best character development I’ve ever seen.
This scene hit me like a brick. My parents were hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt when I was 16 bc I’d had cancer the year before (my treatment ended up being free but the initial ER bills and such were not).
But somewhere along the line they just… Disappeared. My mom says they’re not being paid and they’re not in collections. It’s almost as if someone out there did…exactly what Parker did.
Ever since I saw this the first time, I’ve imagined it was Parker doing it. That she and Hardison had a free weekend and decided to take it out on a collections agency. That I was one of the lucky ones who got a little Leverage.
Okay but like yeah, that is actually a thing that happens, albeit not exactly like this. I don’t remember the exact process but basically there’s a booming industry to sell peoples debt - the business you owe money to sells it to someone else for a fraction of the money owed, wipes their hands of the whole affair, and now whoever bought your debt is riding your ass to get you to give the money to the. But it’s also entirely possible for people to just… buy up massive amounts of debt for pennies on the dollar, and then just. Forgive it. Because capitalism is a living nightmare, but the system is broken enough that it’s possible to exploit it for good sometimes.
Like, the main reason I know about this is because John Oliver did a piece on debt buying a few years ago, and ended it by revealing that he’d bought 15 million dollars worth of medical debt just so he could forgive all of it. Both to expose how broken the system was because some random fucker like him could buy millions of dollars in peoples debt with zero regulations, and also just to take the record for biggest TV giveaway in history.
A charity where you can do this, right here.
Be Parker! Be somebody else’s Leverage!
Reblogging for the website.
yes! if you want to help with the medical debt crisis in the US and have some extra money please donate to RIP Medical Debt if you can. They’re completely legit and really do what they say - you really CAN relieve an incredible amount of debt for the needy with even a small donation. I’m a monthly donor and receive a quarterly report of the debt they’ve abolished, and it truly is amazing. Based on those reports the average amount of debt abolished per person is actually I would say about $600 - which means, if you’re doing the math, that with a $6 donation to RIP Medical Debt, you can potentially pull one person out of a poverty spiral - maybe even one family. For six dollars. that’s a pretty good deal, I think.
RIP Medical Debt is now called Undue Medical Debt!
Undue Medical Debt makes it easy for donors to make an impactful difference in the lives of those struggling with medical debt.
If you met someone with the same last name as you, how surprised would you be?
Not at all, it's very common
A little surprised, but wouldn't immediately assume a connection
I would be surprised and assume there was some relation
I would be very surprised that I *hadn't* met this person, we must be related
Does anyone else with this last name even exist?
"you can call me Miss Pac-Man. We're both round, we both love a little bow in our hair, and we both love to sleep with someone that looks just like us".

one of my dwarves successfully killed a bronze colossus, so i asked another dwarf to make a bronze statue of him, hoping the subject matter would relate to the killing of that bronze colossus, but um
instead, the sculptor made a statue of the colossus slayer's wife leaving him
reminder to visit museums, even if you feel out of place. you feel out of place because there is an established concept of inaccessibility of "high culture" to the masses, purposefully developed to distinguish between social classes.
take up space, read the plaques, get the audioguides. you are just as entitled and right in being there. visit museums, boycott museums, be expressive about your opinions about museums.
a lot of museums are free, or discounted for youth and students. take advantage of that. check your local art museum. check your local history museum. museums are there for you, they are there to educate the public, not to distinguish between class. it isn't a private collection, it's a public exhibit.
GO TO MUSEUMS!!!!!!!
This makes me think of an ad for my most beloved museum, which I think you should all watch. It's based on the proclamation of the gentleman who opened its doors way back in 1916: "for the benefit of all people, forever".
good museums should be all about giving you access! And while its great if they are free (like CMA) and its great if you can afford to help them out.... if they are pay only, give them a call and ask them if they have free days, or if they let in students, or locals, or the elderly, or volunteer for membership programs. If not, send an ol email to some board members (leave staff alone, they don't make the rules).
Another great way to make sure a museum is supporting you is check their website for future plans! So many stuffy ol museums are making great strides to become less stuffy, but you can only know that if they are being transparent! If they arn't letting you know what they plan to do, ASK A BOARD MEMBER. Are they trying to bring in artists from different backgrounds? hire a more diverse staff with expertise in fields they need to expand in? are they trying to get more people in the door and serve their community? here is a good example of a 5 year plan.
If you do want to bother those board members with a polite email, being as snobby as you want right back. If you are liza smith the underpaid school librarian who wants to see if a museum membership is worth it, maybe you want to "Ms Elizabeth Smith, who as a passionate love of education as a local educator, who simply doesn't feel comfortable about planning to make a serious donation without a clear Idea of where her money is going, would you be able to share information on the museums budget and plans?" My local museum sends me mail and has my membership card printed to Lady Poppins, a honorific they let me check a box for and never bothered to check. Infiltrate anyway you want. Go enjoy a nice museum.
I know I have like 4 followers but I simply would not be able to sleep at night if I didn't say: Many public libraries also will lend you passes to local museums for free! Go on your public library website and look for Museum Pass Program or similar and see what they've got and for where! Sometimes this means borrowing a physical pass, or these days they've also got ones where you can just download and print a pass!
And don't convince yourself that you shouldn't do this because someone else might need or want them more, not just because with the printable passes it's not zero-sum, but ALSO because every time someone uses this program the library gets to make a number go up that they can then annually show to the people who give them money and want number to go up to go LOOK, NUMBER WENT UP, PEOPLE LOVE THIS PROGRAM, GIVE US MORE MONEY
more concerning still that I'm hearing this from weather.com
Have you ever gone to an concert/movie alone*?
yes
no
* as in you spent the entire time alone and you didn't go there alone with plans to meet up with someone.
one of my funniest moments in recent memory was saying, basically out of nowhere, "I think I'm so fond of Grant O'Brien because he feels like an original character I made up for an SSBB story," and watching my wife get this immediate thousand-yard-stare of recognition
anyway sorry I may have invented you, Grant, but if it helps it was probably to e.g. blow a guy who thought he was straight in a train station bathroom
I don't think a billionaire like scrooge mcduck should be allowed to rewrite history
does your pet give a fuck when you get home
my pet gives too much of a fuck, we have to manage it

u simply must pick one pet to answer for and elaborate in reblogs if u wish. my cats both care way more than audrey when im back lol she wags her tail and might want to get kinda silly but sometimes doesn't even bother leaving her (open) crate to say hey
has there ever been one of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence who's pretty short whose name was Missa Brevis, because that one feels like a gimme
