“Andi Mack - One In A Minyan” Promo Analysis
Once again, credit to the “DisneyChannelCentral” YouTube channel, because that is where I got my screenshots.
We have a lot to cover here, because from I’m seeing, there are not three, but four storylines, and a fifth that is more of an overseeing one. We’re start with that one first.
I think that a Jewish cultural storyline is starting to become a normal thing for the mid season. If by chance, we get a fourth season, I wouldn’t be surprised if we get another Jewish episode in the middle of it.
From what we can tell based on the promo and what I believe to be past interviews or leaks, this entire episode mainly features celebrating the life of a recently passed relative. I believe it’s Cyrus’ grandmother, but I may be wrong.
There is really not much else to say about this except that it explores another aspect of Jewish culture. Last season was Cyrus’ Bar Mitzvah, a celebration for a coming of age. Now we see a Shiva, which celebrates the life of a past relative. And while we’re on the topic of Judaism…
It’s one of those cultural misunderstandings. Bowie made a kugel, which is a disgrace to bring to a Shiva.
The closest I can get as to why it’s a disgrace is that there is a secondary meaning to Kugel, which means “a Jewish woman from a wealthy background who is seen as excessively materialistic.” Considering that the deceased relative is most likely a grandmother, I don’t think people at a Shiva want to eat something with a meaning that like.
How they deal with this is going to be interesting. This is going to be an over analyzation, but I think I know why this will be a problem. Based on what I read online, you are not supposed to take food home from a Shiva. Food is usually thrown away if not eaten. So Bowie can’t just take it home. However, Bowie is a huge fan of conserving stuff, so he may not be a fan of tossing his work like that.
Plot C: Text From The Party
The writers aren’t going to make us wait for the whole Marty situation. Next episode, we will see Andi and potentially others finding out about Marty’s sudden reappearance. I’m not focusing on that. I want to know why Buffy is so determined for them not to know who it is.
It can be a simple answer, or a difficult one. After all, this was someone Buffy just seemed to push away after a certain encounter. I like to believe that Buffy is finally starting to realize that the way she handles things can hurt other, and she wants to try mend relationships with some of her old friends.
As to why she’s not telling the others? If she’s anything like me, she doesn’t want anyone to make a big deal over something she decided to do. She made a spontaneous decision, and she doesn’t want to be bombarded with so many questions about it.
Plot D: Panic! At The Shiva
You thought it was over, didn’t you? Jonah’s panic attack was gone for a while, but now we can see right here that it’s still happening.
We have no clue what triggered this panic attack. Jonah and Libby are in a good spot right now, so it can’t be that. We’ve seen Jonah have a random one out of nowhere, but why would we make it such a big deal in the promo?
Something had to have caused it. Maybe something happened at the Shiva, causing the panic attack. Maybe Jonah got bad memories about a lost family member. After all, we have no mention of a mother yet. Maybe she died and Jonah is getting the worst flashbacks of it.
The important thing is, this story is far from over, and Jonah’s panic attacks aren’t going away anytime soon.
Plot E: Finding His Voice
I saved the potentially best for last. Potentially, because we don’t know if this is baiting. But I’m placing my bets that Disney is coming through with this.
In the extended promo, Andi says, “It is your choice, who you tell, and when.” This is a clear sign that Cyrus is potentially coming out to someone. We can assume he’s coming out to Jonah, TJ, or both. It would be incredible to see this. Cyrus telling Jonah, and ex-crush, and TJ, his potentially maybe basically confirmed crush.
A lot of people are speculating that he will tell his parents or maybe announce it to everyone. I don’t see this happening. His parents and the others at the Shiva are going to be more focused on their recent loss, and Cyrus’ coming out might disrupt that. It may even be a bit disrespectful for this kind of event. Hopefully, another Jewish event happens where we see Cyrus coming out to his family.
As to why he’s bringing this up now, I’m not sure. I saw a post saying that he was sad he never got to come out to his grandmother, so he’s trying to do so now. But I don’t have any theories of my own.
