Le fait que le futur régent ait, au final, reçu une éducation plutôt soignée, est un exploit. C’est que son père et le roi semblent presque faire exprès pour confier les postes de gouverneur du petit Philippe de Chartres à des vieillards qui vont mourir les uns après les autres! On les remercie en leur proposant de finir leur carrière avec un petit boulot tranquille, peu importe qu’ils soient bons professeurs ou assez en forme pour tenir le poste bien longtemps.
(Exception à la règle: Monsieur fera une vague tentative pour offrir le poste à l’un de ses mignons, le marquis d’Effiat! Suggestion à laquelle Madame s’opposera si vivement qu’on laissera vite tomber pour choisir à la place… un autre vieillard.)
Tout ça signifie des changements constants dans l’entourage du petit prince. Heureusement, les précepteurs changent (un peu) moins souvent. L’avant-dernier d’entre eux, monsieur de Saint-Laurent, parviendra à rester en poste pendant un bon moment. S’il sera très aimé de son élève, son âge avancé le poussera tout de même à engager quelqu’un pour aider le petit Philippe avec ses lectures et ses devoirs. On en reparlera…

Ok so i wanna share my comics about Philippe II (and Dubois!) in english too, but first y’all get some Context.
It’s a bit of a miracle that Philippe de Chartres got a pretty solid education in the end, because for awhile this was all looking very unstable. Typically, once a prince was old enough he got 1) a governor (mostly in charge of everything, followed the little guy around, made sure he was served properly and generally acted as chaperone. He even slept in the prince’s bedroom!) and 2) a perceptor (responsible for teaching).
And the thing with Philippe de Chartres is that Monsieur and Louis XIV kept giving him all these old guys as governors. They were more or less given the job not because they would be a good fit, and more as a cushy retirement gift to thank them for years of service.
And being old, they just uh. kept dying.
(Monsieur did consider giving the job to the (much younger) Marquis d’Effiat at some point…. and Liselotte opposed it so strongly that he had to pick someone else. OH WELL.)
The constant rotation of governors here meant little Philippe’s preceptor, Monsieur de Saint-Laurent ended up being the one stable thing in his environment for awhile (he's the one who got to sleep in the prince's bedroom instead of the governor! keep that in mind.). But the thing is, he was already pretty old too. And so Saint-Laurent decided to hire some additional help. We'll get back to that guy....
The OG french post included a quote from one of Philippe's governors, who in his memoirs described how he was initialy kinda reluctant to take the job, but once he met the little guy he decided to give it everything he had~
AND THE THING IS. It's the last line he wrote. The memoirs just end there. Because he died.
A little focus on Philippe's teeth following discussions with @saintzenni and @wnt1 inspired by liselotte saying Philippe had ugly teeth and by his actor in the reboot of the musical "Le Roi Soleil" (Louis Delort) having cute bunny teeth.
My theory is that since his mouth was said to be small and that he does seem to have a narrow jaw on paintings, his teeth may have lacked space and either been juxtaposed in places or small/misaligned in others. Anyway good opportunity to focus on details lol
Starting off pride month with some wholesome melancholic monchevy again because the end of chev's bio BROKE MY HEART with that paragraph which I'm gonna put here:

a funny thing about having a Problematic Blorbo is that you'll periodically come across a post along the lines of "um let's not forget that [Blorbo] is a bad person..." listing their various crimes, and if you have a modicum of intellectual honesty you find yourself nodding along and saying yeah it's true... but it's the greyness of their character that makes them so compelling... At the same time though you have a little Saul Goodman in your ear going "your honor in their defense: who cares like omfgggg who caresssssss like come onnnnnn"

The re-release of the Classic PS1 versions of Myst and Riven required new trophies, which required new trophy icons, and so I got permission to get a little weird and illustrative with it—super fun getting to revisit this world with a little bit of Mignola mixed in.

I wanted to make a little illustration of the king's surrounding back in 1650. Why that year specifically, for two reasons: for one, multiple actors who would become important in the royal family's surroundings started appearing, like the Mancini and the Lorraines, and secondly, it was a very unique time in that it was right in the middle of the Fronde, and the life at Palais-Royal was quite different than what had come before or would come after; more familial, far more feminine, and quite fun overall, despite the climate of adversity and chaos reigning on the capital.
