Itβs nearly quaint, to be thanked like this. Truth be told, itβs been very difficult for White -- ever since colonization ended, to see anyoneΒ as more than a tool for being used. This especially extends to the rubbery gem before her. Made as a playmate, something she quickly put together and forgot about. And now here she was, different...changed, thanking her?
Something of it seemed almost.....perverse. Or wrong. Who is she, to receive those thanks? She knows itβs not thatΒ complicated, itβs simply the chance to be loved. Something Spinel had craved for years, something White - who sorely missed Pink - was willing to devote herself to.
She nudges a finger affectionately against Spinelβs cheek as she sighs, giving a soft but sadΒ sort of smile.
βYou shouldnβt give me too much credit, dear...youβve deserved better for far longer than this. My only hope is that I can mend some of the bruises.β
no wonder why, my heart feels dead inside itβs cold and hard and petrified lock the doors and close the blinds weβre going for a ride

βBelieve what you will, about the nature of whatβs just and unjust, Starlight. Though doΒ consider what youβve just said, a bit deeply.β She offers. Nails tap nigh casually on the floor below, as if sheβs ponderingΒ what to say next. Though she doesnβt needΒ to ponder. Sheβs already fully aware of her train of thought. Itβs almost as if sheβs building anticipationΒ rather than attempting to recall herself.
βWas it not youΒ as well that launched a Ruby Soldier into the far reaches of space? Seems a bit harsh, that...β Thatβs hypocriticalΒ of her. She knows that. It doesnβt matter. Itβs not designed to favor herself, itβs designed to hurt Pink.Β
βAbide or donβtΒ abide by me all you like...but are there not things you yourselfΒ are guilty of that could be described, too, as evil? Should that be the case?β
Easily the most difficult prejudiced tendency to break White out of would be her tendency to commodify others. As the long self-proclaimed (and believed to be) completely flawless, highest being β White considers herself as naturally superior to everyone other than herself. Even Yellow and Blue, who are giants in their own right on Homeworld, still defer almost instinctively to Whiteβs expectations, which means their own opinions are oft subject to being overruled by her final judgement. For someone like that, who puts themselves on such a high pedestal, they lose the ability to empathize with and treat the people around them as anything other than a tool or a means to an end.
In that sense, itβs difficult for White to view any person or creature with a sense of understanding about their lifeΒ or autonomy. In an almost terrifyingly infantile way, White doesnβt quiteΒ understand death, or at least not the severity of it. She so regularly disposes of people whose wills sheβs violated that sheβs forgotten to consider the person inside who dies when death comes to them.
In a sense, Iβd say this is probably alsoΒ why she draws so heavily inward when PinkΒ βdiesβ. Itβs an odd shock to the system, to have someone a bit more noticeable in your peripheral vision disappear when thatβs only ever happened to people you treat like utensils and not somewhatΒ like family.
Anyway White doesnβt understand the ramifications of death, which also means that she wonβt think twice about killing people for the most part because she just doesnβt really get it or care.
alita: battle angel prompts / @hclfpink
MercyΒ is an optimistic way of describing it.
In truth, it was more like dismissal. It was a kindness, to allow Pink to come back home with such a ridiculous shapeΒ and ridiculous formΒ and not shatter her on the spot. Reconstruct from where sheβd begun. Put the whole thing behind them.
For the emotional benefit of Yellow and Blue, sheβd restrained herself. Told herself sheβd allow Pink the chance to submit to her good-will, if only she were smart enough not to screw it up again.
But that proposition seemed to be falling apart rather hastily. Maybe even more-so than she had expected. Her expression doesnβt compromise, her same glamorous smile undisturbed. Brow raises inquisitively.
βBold words, Starlight. Come to reckon with me, this way? Iβm afraid youβll find yourself quickly out of optionsΒ in that case. If you were to throw yourself at the heel of such mercy, youβd find things would go very leisurely for you...If not? I canβt exactly promise comfort.β
alita: battle angel prompts / @eilghan
Itβs...odd. Resigning herself to the explanation sheβd been offered. Shavings of Pinkβs gem, given new life upon their arrival? It seemed almost too good to be true. But with it came a sense of uneaseΒ or discomfort, that had similarly followed White the longer she had been here, celebrating with everyone.
A sense that sheβs unsure if she deserves this opportunity.
As it was, the Pink she knewΒ -- the Pink that White had raised up had grown to be fearful and resentfulΒ of her. She hadnβt realized it before, but she did now. She knew all too well what her stringent failures had given birth to. Abuse. Neglect. The War. All things that could have been avoided if sheβd stepped outside of her own head, for even a moment.
Now, what remains is simply a mountain of what-ifβs.
So she allows her lips to crease up in a smile, though itβs tinged with regret, and a little bit of sadness.
β...No, no. You just remind meΒ of someone. Are you taking to Earth well, so far...?β
alita: battle angel prompts / @unethiic
βEasily agreed upon...β Her words are smooth and soft, but all the same centeredΒ and very much arrogant.Β βAfter all, I myselfΒ am the brightest fixture of the room.β
That in and of itself was trueΒ in a literal sense, though. She shone positively brilliantly, reflective and sparkling in all the right ways. Sheβs somewhat surprised anyone could stand to enter without squinting.

its not even about whos good and bad cause?? to undermine a grey character like that.. i?? lowkey just ignore everything else to focus on one thingβ¦.. /:
Yeah absolutely! Pink Diamond is a really multifaceted character with a lot of interesting flaws. Sheβs absolutely not the perfect person she was made to seem like from the Crystal Gems putting her on a pedestal, but sheβs certainly not a purely evil tyrant either. Sheβs an earnest, kind person who had trouble connecting to and understanding others at times because of her upbringing. She had the best of intentions but could often be clumsy or unintentionally cruel. Sheβs complicated, but complicated does not equate to evil. And people who call herΒ βthe true villain of the seriesβ are just fooling themselves into falling back into the familiar, comfortable trappings ofΒ βheroes good, villains badβ morality plays.
steven universe: people can be wrong andΒ change. the entire internet: what the fuck? the show is ruined.
quartzlegacy replied to your post: i certainly think thereβs merit in criticizing...
you reached galaxy brain levels here and i respect you for it
like imagine being raised for thousands of years by intergalactic slave owners who treat you like an entitled baby and throw you in a dark room by yourself when you act out. finally escaping to somewhere that makes you happy. and then having a bunch of assholes hound you for leaving somebody behind that you probably werenβt even sure youβd be able to go back and retrieve.
i certainly think thereβs merit in criticizing pink for her more selfish or cruel decisions/actions but wow, itβs really uncomfortable to me how willing the fandom has been to jump on an abuse victim for shit they assumeΒ she must have done purely maliciously and maybe not just like..............ignorantly.

βSimply correctedΒ a mistake.β Her brows arch nigh leisurely. The only other person in the room standing besides the two of themΒ was now hollow looking, gray and washed out. Absolutely perfect.
βAll of the flaws inherent are now smoothed over. I hate to stretch myself thin, but...well, you simply left me no other choice.β
As for this foul mouthed and unwelcome visitor...
βShould I do the same for you? I donβt recall inviting you into my chamber.β
