i (finally) finished reading The Expanse series and IMMEDIATELY turned back around and started book 1 again cuz it was so amazing and i wanted to experience it again right away and,,,jim holden IS consistently the most annoying character throughout all 9 books but also i love his character development from beginning to end lol
as much as I talk shit on james holden, the truth is he is so relatable to me. absolute dipshit. sees buttons and pushes them. can't identify an emotional moment in real time without assistance. instinct for oversharing with the entire galaxy. believes surely humanity could all get along if not for some of us being so stupid. falls in love with women whose competency he could never match. reckless, holy fool.
The funniest thing about The Expanse is that you meet Alex and you think oh that's what Martians are like in this universe. Makes sense, they're frontiersmen, cowboys are analogous to that.
Then you meet all the other Martians and immediately understand why Alex doesn't live on Mars.

James Holden is so funny.
Every time he goes somewhere and opens his mouth, someone is like, wait, is this going to be another Eros?
And he flashes his big brown eyes in either his most sincere or most serious expression like, it's my number one goal to make sure that doesn't happen.
Except the fact that James Holden is there at all means the situation is already 95% on the way to being another Eros and the only correct reaction to seeing James Holden is to fucking evacuate as fast as you can.
as a rule the women on the expanse are these complex, layered characters who make difficult choices and do gray things and have to live with the consequences and the men on the expanse are the most pathetic sopping-wet creatures in the galaxy. and that's why it's a masterpiece
the expanse is a series where the only competent people in the galaxy are women or amos burton, and all the men are twerps or amos burton.

i really thought the point of "being lgbt+ doesn't absolve you of racism as a white person" was that white people arent absolved of racism by being marginalized but it really seems like people think other marginalizations make it okay. no being disabled doesn't do it. no being poor doesnt do it. we need to fight against racism actively no matter what.

Gonna be honest a lot of people deep down view cheating as worse than abuse which is why so many people view downright controlling and manipulative behavior in a relationship as 100% permissible so long as that behavior is centered around either preventing or discovering cheating.

shortest possible story is that he he got arrested and hospitalized after walking around outside at night, MAYBE having 'an episode', MAYBE he was drunk, maybe he was high, maybe he was just being loud, who knows. Dude was outside at night in boxers and cowboy boots and that's all he did to "invite" police interaction.
But cops claimed he assaulted them so he gets arrested. Then goes to the hospital. Then goes back into custody.
And then he's not heard of for a while, then days later says he's out and okay. But facing FELONY charges!

Almost a year later, Lil Nas X is out of a mental health rehab program, looking good, saying he feels really good, and seems to be on the way up after all of this. I'm really happy for him. I hope he has good genuine support in his life through family, friends, and folks rooting on him that he can count on.
I am really disappointed but not surprised how quickly a lot of media support for him disappeared, especially queer papers. An interview from before the police incident really highlighted how many people wanted him to fail and wanted to see him fall, including certain pockets within communities that should have has his back.
