If anyone needs to know, both Snipe and Fatgum have accents!
Fatgum is from Osaka, so he has a Kansai Dialect. He is honestly a character I feel was made purely for Osaka lol
His name is even a reference to his quirk lol
豊満 (とよみつ - Toyomitsu) -> Plump/Full/Easy-Going
太志郎 (たいしろう - Taishiro) -> Fat/Kindness/Goodwill
Japan has 47 dialects - similar to how we in America have accents (think of a Boston accent, New York accent, Jersey Accent, and compare it to Texan accent)
When you're taught Japanese, you're typically taught the Kanto (Tokyo) dialect (like me!), but in certain areas even "thank you" (arigato) can be entirely different!
Not only that, but in different regions there are so many differences between behavior and mindsets. Tokyo versus Osaka is a great example - Tokyo tends to be a bit more formal and closed off, while Osaka is friendly and casual (and usually much nicer to foreigners too, compared to Tokyo)
Osakan Dialect is known for a few things:
It's known for its humorous and expressive nature (so it's often shown in a lot of comedy media)
Kansai dialect often lacks vowel reduction and has a different pitch accent system
Many people, particularly in the Kanto region (Tokyo area), find the Osakan accent to be attractive and appealing
It's essentially more casual and fast paced, compared to Tokyo which is more formal and reserved usually
"Hai" is a good example of how to say "yes" but in Osaka you'd use the sound "un" which is much less formal (essentially a grunt or hum)
Think of someone saying "going to" versus "gonna" and "I got them!" versus "Gottem!"
Instead of "Arigato" (which I'm sure most of you are familiar with) they would say "ōkini" (which also shows greater appreciation!) There are lots of words that are just entirely different in Osaka
The region of Kansai that holds Osaka especially is known for being overall incredibly friendly and casual (and food centered lol)
They tend to hold their syllables longer. き (ki) turns into kii, め (meh) turns into mehh, and て (teh) turns into tehh
When someone from Osaka visits another place, it's pretty darn easy to those who understand Japanese to clock where they're from lol
Anyways I just really like Osaka and realized not a lot of people here in the West really get Fatgum's accent! I would love to explain more things like this if anyone's interested (´∇`)
Osaka has a giant wall of signs on a bunch of buildings near where it begins, and one of the most famous advertisements is the Glico Running Man (the company that makes pocky and pez!) It's been up there since 1935
Anyways, in MHA they replaced the Running Man with All Might, a direct reference to the original advertisement!
