one thing in tlg I'll never complain about is shane proposing when he did
like, when i read it my first thought was "marriage doesnt fix all your relationship problems" and then i thought a moment longer like. actually nevermind this is a very shane thing to do. he saw something traumatic and potentially life-threatening happen to ilya and immediately went for the logistics. "we need a WILL. we need a MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE. we need POWER OF ATTORNEY. oh ok yeah we can come out too i guess. we need a JOINT BANK ACCOUNT"

weird to me that so many people are convinced that Alexei was blackmailing Ilya rather than the simpler (and more devastating) explanation that Ilya has been conditioned his whole life to give 'til it hurts and expect nothing back because that is what he deserves.

I think we as a fandom don't talk about enough how Ilya is a lover but Shane is a protector! Like yes they both are Loverboys and carers but Shane is ferally protective of Ilya since day 1.
Ilya couldn’t understand what the reporter is saying, Shane stepped up to answer for him.
He felt something was off with Ilya in Sochi, kept checking up on him.
After Sochi when Shane realized how dangerous Russia is for Ilya, he tried to convince Ilya to not go back by asking if it's safe, if he has to go back.
When Ilya opened up about his father, Shane climbed up on his lap and hugged him. In that entire episode he kept checking up on Ilya to see if he is okay, if everything back home is okay.
When they get to the cottage, Shane is taking his bag, making his food, making sure he is taken care of. When Ilya talks about the danger of having a Russian passport and marrying Svetlana, Shane is the one who stays up all night to make them 10 years plan.
When his mom questions Ilya's loyalty to Boston Shane defends him.
This isnt the end. In TLG, Shane defends Ilya to Hayden and JJ.
When the near plane crash happens Shane proposes to show Ilya that he is 100% sure about them.
Most importantly when the Commissioner threatens Ilya and Shane to destroy their career, Shane snaps and says he chooses Ilya.
Shane is constantly making sure of Ilya's wellbeing, planning things for him, defending and choosing him everytime. Ilya is 100% Shane's baby and Shane is an overprotective mother hen which I think is beautiful.
So when I say Shane isn't a good person really I don't mean that he's like. Bad. Or malicious or evil. I just see so many fics that write him as this weird paragon of perpetual virtue, almost saintlike, where he's impossibly kind and an activist and sweet to Ilya like a little kitten and caring of his friends and I'm just sitting here thining....no??
Shane's canonically kind of a selfish guy! Not in a terrible way, he just doesn't really care about stuff outside of his direct sphere. He only gets into philanthropy when there's a direct benefit to him (laundering his relationship). He loves his friends but he's not super caring of them or all that invested in their lives (forgetting Hayden's baby's name is peak). Some of that is he's too wrapped up in his own shit and his secrets but I think a lot of it is just his personality. Shane's not selfish to the degree of it being a personality flaw (see: Shane giving up a day with Ilya to babysit Hayden's kids. I wouldn't have) but he's more selfish than selfless.
We don't hear about him sending signed pucks to sick kids or doing charity with the Voyageurs or that sort of thing. Maybe he's doing it in the background idk. Most likely he's got some assistant in charge of it. But that's not something he spends a lot of mental energy on.
He's not rude or cruel to people, but internally he's a bit judgemental. He sells himself pretty ruthlessly. He’s wealthier than anyone on this website can even comprehend. He’s a landlord.
To get to three cups in a decade Shane’s also got to be very locked in as captain. Like Theriault is this fandom villain (fair) but it just doesn’t make sense to have Shane constantly clashing with him and the Voyageurs and still winning over and over. We see Shane let homophobic comments slide in the locker room and I have to assume that’s his general approach to dealing with things in Montreal. Winning comes first.
I’ve said a million times I love Shane. I’m obviously obsessed with him, look at my many posts. But I just think he’s a grittier and more interesting than the fandom gives him credit for, they just turn him into like the anxious nagging wife who tells Ilya to pick up his socks and is Team Mom.
Would it be too optimistic of me to think that due to Unrivaled's publishing date being pushed back to June 2027....that TLG WILL be split in half instead of shoving the whole thing into season 2?
I mean I feel like TLG is a perfect end already but that would just mean more seasons if anything.
I'm probably just being delusional, but I feel like TLG has 2 plots (Ilya's struggles wkth his trasition to Ottowa and depression in the first half, then the being outed in the second half), and the proposal is a perfect halfway end point, imo and they would be able to go deeper into stuff otherwise I feel like so much will be cut to fit.

HIDE YOUR FIRES UPDATE
Hello darlings. I thought I would give an update to those waiting for the next chapter of Hide Your Fires.
I have not abandoned this fic!!! I don't even really consider this a hiatus, I am just at the whims of my creative flow and when I needed to take a break back in November my brain got side tracked and I haven't been able to slip back into the mindset.
I'm terrible at giving some kind of estimate because I never really know.
Chapter ten is about half written and way more of a monster than I anticipated it being. I have been working on my personal cosmic horror cult project for the past few weeks since taking a leave of absence from this semester and the world going insane hasn't been fantastic for my mental health but rest assured I will be writing and finishing this baby.

I feel like there is a lot of negativity and crappy stuff going on in the world (an understatment) and Fandom right now and instead of focusing on all the racism and anxiety inducing discourse I just want to think about what I'm most excited for in season 2.
• Jacob Tierney' season 2 Playlist. We know he loves to incorporate music and he's using a lot of indie and Canadian artists and I'm just really ready for more. Discovering Wolf Parade and Dilly Dally have been transformative. (Not to mention all the other good music that is now part of my daily and repeat playlists) How he gave Shane and Ilya the moon motife which is so so so good, the sunshine metaphors, UGH I just can't wait.
• The little changes that will elevate the source material. God. The bathroom scene. It is decimating in the show where as in the book it's a lot more light hearted and I love that change. ITS SO FUCKING GOOD DUDE. Making Ilya an eater from the first sex scene because...yeah, that man wasn't going to wait for that? Are you kidding me? Making the Hayden phone call scene so playful and hilarious which is a feat because that is my least favorite scene in the book and literally the only one I skip during rereads. Switching lines around so Shane was asking Ilya "how did we let this happen" and David said "We know you pretty well Shane." Truly so so so so good. HAVING SHANE APOLOGISE FOR THE TUNA MELT. Yes. There are so many little moments I could mention and I'm just ready to see how they make my favorite scenes from the book better. I could speculate all day on which ones I'm excited to see but I am terrible at predicting how this show moves and I'm happy with the ignorance. It makes it even better as a book reader tbh because I go in and am still surprised!
• What will be added in to expand on what we don't actually get to see in the books. ALL THE RUSSIA STUFF. THE MONOLOGUE. SHANE AND HIS MOM TALKING. SHANES MOM IN GENERAL. I actually adore the momager angle they gave to Yuna. The acknowledgment of Shane's Asian heritage. So good. Now I know of a few things they'll probably do (or i hope they will) in season two, such as Shane's coming out which we don't get to actually see in the book. One scene I am really really hope we get to see is Shane and Ilya's argument when Ilya like offers Shane the ability to sleep around. Once again, I'm terrible at predicting what they will keep and discard but I'm just really excited to see how they add in expansive scenes.
• Ilya being depressed as hell, yes. Amazing. But also I would really like to see Jacob take Shane's disordered eating more seriously than the book did.
• Really excited to see how they integrate Role Model in and the pacing.
• Of course, Ilya and Shane Making out A LOT. The Halloween scene, the post game edging scene, The plane scene and their facetime afterwards. SHANES REACTION TO FINDING OUT ABOUT THE PLANE. The puppies. The boxing day fight (I love a good fight man and I think Connor and Hudson are going to make it devistating). Shane telling off the commissioner. Ilya playing yatzee with Shane's Parents.
Am I anxious about it, yeah. But I'd rather focus on what's going to be good.
