You had first heard about getting a new neighbor when you overheard your mom talking to your dad in the car.
“Did you hear the renovated house next door is being sold?” she had asked him, since the house had been under renovations since before your family had moved in when you were in kindergarten.
“Yeah, it was bought by a family who just opened a new dance studio in the town. They have a son who is 12, and a daughter who is 10.” Your father had been a member of the neighborhood’s HOA for a year now, so he knew everything about new homeowners, who was building a pool in their backyard, and everything in between.
“[Name], their daughter is your age. Maybe you two could become friends once they move in?” Your dad looked at you from the rearview mirror, smiling at the thought of you making a good friend.
It wasn’t that you had friends, you did! They just weren’t friends you were close with. You tended to be a floater in school, especially since everyone just about already had their best friend. You never brought home any friends for playdates, or were invited to sleepovers, and your parents, especially your father, were extremely worried about you not having a close friend and being extremely close to middle school.
“Maybe.”
Your dad looked at your mother with a face of concern. Before he could say anything, she quickly butted in.
“[Name], try and give this one a chance, alright? I know that you don't like new people, but this could be the start of a close and long friendship, so try to be a little open-minded, alright?”
[Name] looked outside the window of the car, watching the cars pass by on the freeway.
“Ok, I guess I’ll give it a shot.”
It had been two weeks since that conversation, and 2 days since the new neighbors moved in. Currently, you are standing at the door with your mother, muffins in her hands and a basket filled with bungeoppang in your hands.
“Now, [Name], you have bread crumbs on your face! What did you have for breakfast?!” Your mom looked at you with mild disappointment, wiping the crumbs off.
“An egg sandwich. Dad made ‘em, I thought you had one too.”
“Oh.. why yes I did.” She scrubbed the rest of the crumbs off your face. “There, all better. Now, we have to be very kind to them, especially because they just moved in, alright?”
“I guess so.”
Your mom smiled at you, and rang the doorbell. You heard footsteps pattering, along with a faint “Mom! Someone’s at the door!” before you heard the click of the lock, and suddenly, a young boy who looked to be about 12 stood in the entryway.
“Do I know you?” He looked at your mother first, then spared a quick glance at you, before his gaze dropped to the bungeoppang you had in your basket.
“Is that bungeoppang?” He looked at you, a bright smile on his face, and you noticed his facial features. He had beautiful almond shaped eyes, with long lashes that contrasted with his smaller eyes to give him eyes similar to a feline. A round face, and moles perfectly placed around his face. He was flat-out gorgeous.
“Y-Yeah, with chocolate filling.” You quickly recollected yourself and handed him the bungeoppang, much to your mother's shock, as she had never seen you do that willingly.
“Thanks! What’s your name, I’m Nishimura Riki!”
“[Name]. [Last Name].”
“Cool! This your mom?” He directed his attention to your mother, who quickly recollected herself and placed the muffins on top of the basket he was holding.
“Yes, it’s nice to meet you Riki, I’m Mrs. [Last Name], we live right across the street. Is your mother home?
Riki turned around and looked towards the kitchen. “She’s cooking, but I think she can come. Mom! Come meet the neighbors!”

Riki didn’t want to move.
He didn't see the point, after all, his parents could just monitor the new dance studio from their hometown, but instead, they uprooted him and his sister from their hometown, placing them in a city where he knew absolutely no one.
When the doorbell rang, he expected it to be an Amazon package delivery, since that’s what this mom was using to decorate their new kitchen.
What he didn’t expect was to see your mother…and you.
As soon as he saw you, he was captivated by how ethereal you looked. It was if you held a shining ring of light that followed you everywhere, and led you to his doorstep. He couldn’t help the smile that formed on his face, especially when he directed his gaze to the basket you were holding.
Bungeoppang.
His favorite treat.
Were you an angel sent from heaven? Whether you were or not, Riki knew at that moment, he wanted to see you more often.
Perhaps moving wasn’t a bad idea on his parents’ part.
