ADHD Study Tips!
College is starting up again soon, and for college students with ADHD, that means it’s time to get our shit together. I’m a doctoral student in the last year of my PharmD and I’ve been doing this college thing for a long time. I also have ADHD. I figured I would compile some of my study tips to help out students who might be new to college or just want some ideas on how to stay on top of things.
ADHD Study Tips
Meds are your friend. I know a lot of people don’t like taking meds, but you gotta give yourself the best chance you can. Some people can’t take amphetamines, but there are non-amphetamine ADHD options out there; I’m a pharmacy student and I’m happy to talk to anyone who wants more information on medications.
Record. Your. Lectures. This was lifesaving for me. My brain doesn’t perform on command, so my attention during lectures was really hit or miss. When I started recording my lectures, I could listen to them later, when my brain was “on.”
Don’t force it. Don’t put yourself in a position where you’re cramming for exams and NEED to focus NOW. I know with ADHD, this is REALLY HARD because we struggle so much with executive dysfunction. But forcing myself to try to focus when my brain doesn’t want to does nothing except destroy my self-esteem, frustrate me, and make me less productive.
Find a planner that works for you. Put EVERYTHING on it. I use Google Calendar because it syncs to my phone and I can check first thing every morning to see what’s on the agenda. When I say put everything on it, I mean literally everything. Appointments, due dates, exam dates, times you want to study, your work schedule, if you want to go to the gym, etc. I think an electronic planner is best because it will alert you if you double book yourself, but some people prefer paper.
Bribe yourself. This is how I battle my executive dysfunction. “If you get up and go study, you can go to Starbucks.” It has to be a decent reward, something you don’t normally get.
Figure out what kind of ambiance you need to focus. I can’t focus in silence, I need background noise. Some people find background noise distracting and need silence. Whichever you are, explore a little to figure it out.
DON’T STUDY AT HOME. Home is dangerous. Home is where my bed, video games, television, books, and piano are. Those things tempt me. If I want to focus for more than 30 seconds at a time, I need an environment free of temptations.
Study in groups, but CAUTIOUSLY. I have one friend in pharmacy school who I studied with a lot during the didactic part of the curriculum. We meshed because we had a similar drive and frankly a similar level of anxiety about failing. I had other study groups where we got nothing done and it just made me anxious. Some groups will help you stay on task and Get Shit Done. Other groups will distract you, drive you off topic, and screw you over.
Make learning more interactive. Don’t just read your notes, that’s too passive. What I like to do is write out answers to the learning objectives for each lecture. There’s usually a slide at the beginning of lectures in pharmacy school that spells out the specific learning objectives. If there’s not an objectives slide, check the book chapter for objectives. If there’s really no learning objectives, ask your professor for some, or make up your own. The point is, it’s easier to learn things when you have a clear idea what you want to learn.
adhd and exams
disclaimer: these are some things that make it easier for me to study when i can’t take my adhd medication. i have inattentive type adhd, so it might be different for people with combined type or hyperactive type. my experiences are not universal, and what works for me might not work for others.
alleviating symptoms
if you have adhd medication, fucking take it. i know it can make you feel gross and anxious, but if you can, it’ll make studying so much easier
if you don’t have adhd medication, having a cup of tea, coffee, soda, or an energy drink might help you gather the energy that you need to focus more intently. if caffeine makes you anxious and jittery, skip this step. you can’t study if you’re having a panic attack
meditate!! i know, i know, it isn’t going to magically make all of your symptoms go away, and it doesn’t work for everybody, but there’s really no harm in taking five minutes out of your day to try. it might not make it easier to focus, but i personally get a lot less irritated with myself after meditating, which makes it easier to be forgiving when i get distracted
preparing your workspace
put on clothes that make you feel productive. these vary from person to person. you might feel more comfortable in sweatpants or pajamas, or you might feel more motivated to work in nice jeans and a button-down shirt. socks and shoes are great so that your feet don’t get cold, and it might be a good idea to tie your hair back so it doesn’t get in your face
clean off the space where you’ll be studying. if you don’t have time to organize the room, just take everything off of the desk or table and set it aside. it’s hard to focus when the area around you is cluttered
gather all of your materials. books, pens and pencils, looseleaf or notebooks and binders, folders and classwork, technology, chargers, a speaker to play music if you want, a bottle of water, maybe a snack. you should have everything you need to stay in this space for a few hours without constantly getting up to fetch things
that being said, keep your immediate workspace clear of everything that you’re not using at the moment. minimize distractions in your field of view
as you’re studying
try listening to music while you work. it can help you divert some of your excess energy. i like video game soundtracks, because they’re upbeat and fun to listen to but don’t have distracting lyrics
if music is too distracting, white/pink/brown noise can be a good way to block out outside noises and distractions
fidget!! bounce your leg, squeeze a stress ball, play with putty, roll a ball around with your feet, mouth the words to a song or chew gumÂ
make it fun. it’s a lot easier to focus on a subject that you’re interested in. if you don’t care about what you’re learning, have fun making your notes look cool, or seeing how much information you can fit on one page. make a game out of it, if you need to. flashcards are great for this
switch between subjects! once you start getting bored of one, switch to another until you’re bored of that, and keep moving until you’ve finished everything
take!!! fucking!!!! breaks!!!!!
honestly this is what’s saved my life in terms of studying with adhd. there are tons of different ways to do this. you can use a timer, an app, or just your intuition to know when you’re starting to lose focus
if you’re having trouble getting started or getting your words down on to the page, try using a very short cycle of work/breaks. i like to have four minutes and thirty seconds where i sprint to get down everything i can, and then thirty seconds to catch my breath before i start again
for subjects like science and reading, where you might need more of a consistent flow of thought, a scheme like twelve minutes of work, three of break might work better. adjust the times to fit your liking. if you need longer breaks, that’s ok! if you need less breaks, but can’t work for more than an hour without a longer break, that’s alright too
do things in your breaks, if you have enough time! if you need energy, dance around to a pop song or do push ups or jumping jacks. if you need to rest, meditate or just sit and let your mind wander. if you need to keep busy so you don’t lose your streak of productivity, check emails or reblog posts to your queue
forgive your own “imperfections”
i know how frustrating it can be to feel like you always have to put in three hours of work to somebody else’s hour, or like you’ll never be able to focus as well or as long as they can. don’t beat yourself up for this. give yourself time to be annoyed, and angry, and sad and hopeless and lost, and then get up and give it your everything all over again. everybody works differently, and you bring things to the table that nobody else could. don’t let anybody tell you otherwise
What having Inattentive ADHD has taught me about studying
Hi everyone,
This post is basically a run down of what I have found is generally the case when I’m studying and also the case for some friends with a similar type of ADHD.Â
1. EVERYTHING MUST BE PLANNED IN ADVANCE
And when I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING. Have an assignment due? Well you’ll need to schedule in sleep and food and your partner and a life if you want to get it done.Â
2. Extensions are bae
My university offers something called an Access plan which, when you have the proper documentation allows you to get extensions more easily than you would usually. If you’re studying with ADHD look into it.Â
3. Take into account that your ADHD is probably not going to want to conform to your schedule.Â
As such, try and stick to it as much as you can. If your focus wanders get up move around and shake it off, stretch, scream if you need to. Just do what you need to get around your feelings of frustration and or lack of motivation.Â
4. Don’t lose heart if your focus wanders!
It’s a thing guys. It’s going to happen. If you’re medicated it may happen less but, beating yourself up about it is only going to make you feel like shit and possibly make you frazzled.
5. Learn to successfully prioritise.Â
When you’ve made a plan and you’ve laid out what has to happen in order to succeed. Prioritise your health and wellbeing OVER your study. If you’re out of sorts and can’t deal with anyone because you feel so overwhelmed and tired, you’re not going to achieve your aims.
6. Don’t punish yourself if you can’t manage to get your work done when you aimed to.Â
Self punishment in any form is a bad practice. The fact that you are upset that you can’t finish your work when you wanted to says that you’re dedicated to getting it finished and finishing it well.Â
7. Don’t rush your work!
As much as our brains scream at us to cram the whole assignment in one night. Honestly, it’s likely going to be of poor quality. Start early, and go back to it. Set reminders in your phone. Work with a friend in the same class. Get someone you know and trust to look over it.Â
8. Don’t take constructive criticism about your work personally.
This is one I seriously struggled with. It wasn’t until I found out about RSD that I realised that every time someone was giving me constructive criticism it was setting me off. Now I know that, I can work around it.Â
9. Get enough sleep!
I cannot stress enough how important it is for our ADHD brain to get enough restful sleep. I know it can be difficult but a sleep schedule is probably the best course of action. Go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time regardless of your work.Â
10. You can do it!
If you’re studying and you really enjoy it but you feel discouraged by others or by your own ADHD mind. Realise that that is just a feeling and that no one can dictate to you what your life should hold. If someone says that you can’t do it and it’s something you have a passion for, try your hardest and ignore the haters. It may not always work out but at least you can be proud that you gave it a go.Â
almost all studying tips I see are not adhd friendly so here's a couple I personally use that may or may not work for yall depending on situations:
listen to music with headphones/earbuds at whatever tempo you know is easy for you to tune out. I prefer fast music with heavy bass
instead of remove distractions I sit in the living room with the tv on low volume as background motion so other activity wont randomly grab my attention
keep a drink and snack on hand so you wont have to get up to get one later
have someone in the room who you ask to only talk to you if you talk to them about your study topic first. have them direct you back to it if you stray away
GET COMFORTABLE. you dont have to be at a desk ffs the discomfort will distract you more
keep a notebook and pen on hand. physically writing my notes instead of typing helps me remember better
if you take meds make sure to do so well over an hour beforehand
if you have pets make sure theyre well entertained beforehand as I know my dogs seeking attention is a big distraction for me
if youre at home make sure to let everyone know that this time period is only for studying and that you will not be available for anything else. do so a couple days in advance and verbally remind them every day until
study with adhd
Hi, it’s werelivingarts. I’ve been creating contents about academic life, but I realize that I leave out many students who are having ADHD that can make studying very challenging. I’m a no expert in this field, but I’ve been researching some tips that ADHD students find useful. Therefore, I really hope that some of the tips can help you to make studying less boring and easier! ❤️
Remember: Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re being silly, or lazy, or fussing over nothing. They are trying to apply rules that work for standard brains. You don’t need to explain anything, it is nobody’s business but yours. Don’t let anybody shame you or push you around. All you need to do is smile and say, “Well, it works for me.” 💙💜💻
P/s: If you have any useful tips, please share them below!
some people were asking for a actual and i can never pass up an opportunity to procrastinate so here’s just a couple of things i always need to remind myself of…now back to my paper :(

A Glasgow nightclub has installed a two-way mirror which allows male revellers in private booths to spy on unsuspecting women as they visit the toilet! With no notification or signage anywhere in the venue many female club goers have been left feeling embarrassed and used. Although they do briefly show the mirrors in a promo video, the club has been quickly deleting comments and posts on their social media from club goers trying to alert others to the situation. This is pretty much illegal and hugley violates privacy. Thank you The Shimmy Club for giving us a shiny, new, creative and cool take on objectification. article here
i’m never leaving my house again, this world is just too fucked up.
gross gross gross gross gross
Good morning disgusting. Remember ladies:
“No space, leave the place” (fingernail test)
A two way mirror must be set INTO the wall, not placed on top of it.
If you rap/knock against the mirror, one installed onto a wall (a normal mirror) will make a dull sound, because there’s something behind it. A two-way will have more reverberation.
Use the flashlight on your phone to shine on the mirror, if it’s a two-way, you’ll be able to see into the other room.
You can also shield your eyes and see in if you lean up against the glass.
The room being viewed will have to be brightly lit (10x brighter than the room looking in), so if you’re in a typical dimly lit club bathroom, you’re ok.
boosting the fuck out of this
They have this in Continental Midtown in Philly, it’s fucking creepy and not cool at all
the most obvious solution i can think of is to break that motherfucker. what are they going to do? sue you for breaking something they shouldnt have had?
That’s fucking disgusting.
Hey, fellas. You ever feel like you have to check if you’re standing in front of a two-way mirror? Women do.
This needs to be known

11/30/19 // starry night
push yourself to get up before the rest of the world - start with 7am, then 6am, then 5:30am. go to the nearest hill with a big coat and a scarf and watch the sun rise.
push yourself to fall asleep earlier - start with 11pm, then 10pm, then 9pm. wake up in the morning feeling re-energized and comfortable.
get into the habit of cooking yourself a beautiful breakfast. fry tomatoes and mushrooms in real butter and garlic, fry an egg, slice up a fresh avocado and squirt way too much lemon on it. sit and eat it and do nothing else.
stretch. start by reaching for the sky as hard as you can, then trying to touch your toes. roll your head. stretch your fingers. stretch everything.
buy a 1L water bottle. start with pushing yourself to drink the whole thing in a day, then try drinking it twice.
buy a beautiful diary and a beautiful black pen. write down everything you do, including dinner dates, appointments, assignments, coffees, what you need to do that day. no detail is too small.
strip your bed of your sheets and empty your underwear draw into the washing machine. put a massive scoop of scented fabric softener in there and wash. make your bed in full.
organise your room. fold all your clothes (and bag what you don’t want), clean your mirror, your laptop, vacuum the floor. light a beautiful candle.
have a luxurious shower with your favourite music playing. wash your hair, scrub your body, brush your teeth. lather your whole body in moisturiser, get familiar with the part between your toes, your inner thighs, the back of your neck.
push yourself to go for a walk. take your headphones, go to the beach and walk. smile at strangers walking the other way and be surprised how many smile back. bring your dog and observe the dog’s behaviour. realise you can learn from your dog.
message old friends with personal jokes. reminisce. suggest a catch up soon, even if you don’t follow through. push yourself to follow through.
think long and hard about what interests you. crime? sex? boarding school? long-forgotten romance etiquette? find a book about it and read it. there is a book about literally everything.
become the person you would ideally fall in love with. let cars merge into your lane when driving. pay double for parking tickets and leave a second one in the machine. stick your tongue out at babies. compliment people on their cute clothes. challenge yourself to not ridicule anyone for a whole day. then two. then a week. walk with a straight posture. look people in the eye. ask people about their story. talk to acquaintances so they become friends.
lie in the sunshine. daydream about the life you would lead if failure wasn’t a thing. open your eyes. take small steps to make it happen for you.
This is all really good advice for dealing with long term depression and anxiety. It’s not gonna magically cure you, but I’ve pushed myself to incorporate a few of these things into my day to day routine and it helps
i really need to follow this
this is a life goal. to be this happy.
help I’m having emotions about a cartoon antidepressant trying to be useful
DID YOU GUYS SERIOUSLY GIF AN ABILIFY COMMERCIALÂ
yes but look at it, it cares about her and just wants to help her be able to function. It’s like “I know you’re sad. here, I’ll help you.”
LIKE OKAY THOUGH can I explain why this is exceedingly brilliant??  Because when anti-depressants work right, that’s what they DO.  They don’t make you happy or emotionless or unhealthy in any way, they make you FUNCTIONAL.  They make it so that a depressed person who can barely get out of bed can start to support themselves again and more importantly, start to THINK for themselves again without the permeating presence of depression.
Depression is a cyclical disease, that tells you to think a certain way, and, because you’re depressed, you generally believe it, and then things get worse and worse.  The ONLY thing anti-depressants do is to STOP that cycle in its tracks!!  Which is something to be ecstatic about and celebrated, even if you don’t realize it at the time, because when you’re depressed, getting out of bed is climbing Mount Everest.  Antidepressants help stop that cycle so that one day soon, getting out of bed can JUST be getting out of bed.  They don’t even expedite the recovery process in most cases, they just make recovery POSSIBLE IN THE FIRST PLACE.  So this little guy is portrayed with a fuckton more accuracy than I ever expected from a commercial.
It’s back and adorable
