JACK SPARROW

Jack Sparrow was a legendary pirate of the Seven Seas and the irreverent trickster of the Caribbean. A captain of equally dubious morality and sobriety, a master of self-promotion and self-interest, he fought a constant and losing battle with his own best tendencies while living the pirate's life. Sparrow may be the best or worst pirate, depending on whose opinion to take into account, and was the quickest to seize the moment and make it his own; whether by cause and careful planning or mere accident was a matter of debate, but the results were the same and always different. He had been cursed, left for and come back from the dead, and seen his fair share of the supernatural through magic and mythical beings, as well as becoming the center of various myths and legends himself. Captain Jack Sparrow's first love was the sea, his second his beloved ship the Black Pearl, and desired freedom and adventure more than any material treasure.

Born on a pirate ship in a typhoon, Jack Sparrow was the son of Captain Edward Teague, Pirate Lord of Madagascar and Keeper of the Pirate Code. Before he became known as the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow, he was simply known as Jack Sparrow, an adventure-seeking teenage stowaway who sailed on a series of quests and missions for about one year, beginning with a quest for the Sword of Cortés with a ragtag crew on the Barnacle, struggling to find his place on the Seven Seas as he followed his enigmatic father's buccaneering footsteps. At some point in time following his earliest adventures, Jack earned the name "Jack the Sparrow" after a sea battle with the Silent Mary, which he defeated and sunk along with its captain, the merciless and ruthless pirate hunter Armando Salazar of the Spanish Navy, at the Devil's Triangle. In the wake of having facilitated the escape of Christophe-Julien de Rapièr, a friend who had been accused of rogue piracy, Jack was forced to abandon the pirate life and pursued a legitimate career as a merchant seaman for the East India Trading Company. Five years of service later, the wily sailor was given command of the Wicked Wench, a merchant ship owned by Cutler Beckett, the EITC Director for West Africa. Within the year as Beckett's employee, Sparrow searched for the magical island of Kerma and the treasure in the Shining City of Zerzura, until he decided to betray Beckett and keep the island and its inhabitants safe from Beckett and his slave traders. When Beckett ordered him to transport a cargo of humans as slaves to the Bahamas, promising to sell him the Wench for just one shilling, Sparrow initially agreed but chose to liberate them instead and stole the Wench from Beckett. Furious at being disobeyed, Beckett sent ships and men to track Sparrow and the Wench down, in which he was caught, imprisoned, and branded as a pirate, irrevocably returning Sparrow to a life of piracy, while the Wench was set aflame and sunk in order to punish Jack for his rebellion in freeing the slaves. After striking a bargain with the fearsome Davy Jones, the ghastly cursed captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman, in which his beloved vessel was raised from the depths in exchange for his immortal soul, Jack had rechristened the resurrected and transformed Wicked Wench as the Black Pearl, inspired by the Biblical parable of the "pearl of great price." Shortly afterwards, Jack Sparrow began the pirate's life anew and became one of the nine Pirate Lords of the Brethren Court, with Sparrow himself holding one of the Nine Pieces of Eight as the new Lord of the Caribbean Sea.

Verses and AUs

Main verse: is set between the events of Curse of the Black Pearl and At World's End (it is the mun's personal choice not to include the other movies in this verse).

Price of Freedom verse: in which Jack is still employed by the EITC, working for Cutler Beckett.

Siren!Jack AU: Jack is a half-siren in this AU, being the son of Captain Teague and Nethys, the siren queen. He has the ability to seduce people using only his voice, make them to do what he wants (with varying results), though he only uses this as a last resort should his plans go terribly wrong. He can also breathe underwater, and if he fully gives in to his siren nature, he can become stronger than your average human. He just rarely does it, however, in fear of not being able to snap out of it one day.

Also, I'm still a little rusty on the style side. I suppose the only way to improve is to keep feeding my hyperfixiation. Lol.

I want to get better at drawing these two, just so I can go ahead and draw my ocs too.

I just love James so much & he didn't need to die

I immediately becamed enamored with when I first watch COTBP & have been so invested with his character ever since.

he's just such a beautifully written complex character & seriously one of the best male characters disney ever created. he bears some resemblance to an Austenian hero. he's a good natured man who's deeply flawed & struggles with internal conflict, that has also made grave mistakes that he deeply regretted. he wants to do the right thing so badly that he sacrificed his integrity in order to regain honor, but all it did was leave him lonely & depressed. I cried so hard when he died, not just cuz he was killed off but also because his death was pointless.

James is also a perfect example of how not write a complex character. his character arc from COTBP to AWE was brilliant, until the end when it was cut off too short. he had not completed his hero's journey, he still had to atone for his actions & make amends, but he was not given the chance to do so. his death served no purpose, if he was kept alive it would've made no difference to the ongoing story, & everything would've continued the same. there was so much more that could've been done with him, so much more to explore about his character cuz he was so fascinating. honestly I feel he was so underutilized in AWE & only served as a plot device for Elizabeth's arc which is so unfair, he deserved better than that. he didn't need to die for Elizabeth to continue her story. his death also sends the message that if you suffer & make mistakes you deserve to die which is very bleak & macabre.

he didn't need to become another tragic character. his death was just so sad & unnecessary. he deserved better.

also please look at his smile! he's so cute! I wish we saw him smile like this more! he deserved to be happy like this all the time!

"Shh, you're safe now," Jack said softly, and smiled at James, hoping it wasn't too frightening. Like all sirens, he had razor sharp teeth behind his lips, but he did not intend to use them. Instead, he pulled himself further up onto the beach to sit beside James.

"I know... it isn't my kind's nature to save people. But... I just couldn't let you drown."

He chuckled softly when he saw the Commodore reach out to touch his tail, then stopped just mere inches away from the shimmering, blue scales. Curiosity did not bother him at all. He was fascinated, too, and understood the feeling well.

"You can touch me if you want. I won't eat you, I promise." He said. "Then it wouldn't make much sense why I saved you, wouldn't it?"

Then, he fell silent for a couple minutes, those dark brown eyes looking into James' emerald ones, and Jack reached out as well - slowly, fingers stopping just short of James' face. Jack hesitated for a moment, then he brushed a wet lock of hair away from James' face, the movement gentle and careful. A blush colored the siren's cheeks as he did so.

"You're... handsome." He whispered, almost shy.

"Uhm... my name is Jack. I know, unusual for a siren.. my father insisted on naming me. You see... he was a sailor. I'm only half-siren."

"Forgive me, I talk too much." He apologized. "What's your name, if you don't mind me asking?"

James blinked up at him, lips parted slightly as the siren—Jack, he called himself—spoke with such softness, such calm, that it almost quieted the storm still howling in his skull. “Shh, you’re safe now,” Jack had said, and James—so used to barking orders and holding steel in his spine—actually obeyed. He stilled. He breathed. He rested his head down, still woozy.

He watched Jack pull himself higher onto the sand, more of that iridescent blue tail revealed in the moonlight, every inch of it otherworldly. A creature of myth sitting beside him as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

When Jack gave him permission to touch, James let his fingers hover a moment longer before finally brushing them against the slick, cool surface of the siren’s scales. They shimmered under his hand, smooth and firm, like wet velvet over armor. A strangled sort of laugh escaped him—astonished, unguarded. “I don’t think I’ll ever be able to explain this in a report.”

Then Jack reached out. James stiffened instinctively, but didn’t pull away—not when those long, slender fingers tucked a wet lock of hair behind his ear. The touch was featherlight, reverent. It made his breath catch.

“You’re… handsome.”

James blinked. He, the commodore—drenched, disheveled, half-drowned—was being called handsome.. by a siren? A blush of his own crept to his pale cheeks, and he coughed, unsure if it was seawater or flustered disbelief rising in his chest.

“You—uh…” He cleared his throat. “You’re… r-rather striking yourself.”

It was all he could manage without sounding like an utter fool. Sounding rather ...shy..

At Jack’s mention of his sailor father, James’ expression softened, surprise flickering through his eyes. “That explains the name. Jack. No, it suits you.” He paused, the weight of exhaustion settling in again, but there was a small smile now, faint and crooked.

“You're talking an adequate amount,” he added, with a weak chuckle. “And… my name is Norrington. Commodore James Norrington. Though I suspect titles mean little here on the sand. I … suppose James will do.”

He let the title fall away for now. All that really mattered was that Jack was still looking at him like he hadn’t just fallen from the sky.

James let his head tip back slightly, eyes drifting up to the storm-cleared stars. “I… suppose I owe you my life.” I assure you I .. won't forget that."

"Thank you... James." Jack's smile widened a little, and he flopped onto his back, looking up at the stars as well. "Do you have somewhere to go? Home, I mean? I could try finding your ship and get you back there somehow..."

He paused then, turning his gaze away from the stars to look at James again. Stars, he thought, this is like being in a dream.

"I don't know what Commodore means, but it sounds important," he said. "Are you like, royalty? Or a nobleman?" Jack had so many questions to ask, but held back. He didn't want to ruin the moment with his curiosity towards humans. He fell silent instead, listened to the waves crashing against the shoreline... all the while looking at James, eyes glistening in the moonlight.

Then, he started to hum a melody. It was not seductive or threatening, no -- it was soothing and gentle, something one might even call ethereal. Jack's voice, while deeper than most sirens', wasn't unpleasant sounding. He could use it to seduce men, but it wasn't the case now. Instead, it had a calming effect on whoever heard it, sending the message of everything will be alright, trust me.

"I know, I'm a disobedient scoundrel," Jack chuckled, snapping his compass closed. He downed the rum quickly, then walked back to the bed and fell back against the pillows. "Here, now I won't faint again... truth be told, I'm feeling better, yes. It's just this damn pain..."

He looked up at James then, and smiled -- not mockingly, but in an honest, friendly, or perhaps more, way. "It's thanks to you I feel better... and perhaps you'll be pleased to hear I'm hungry."

"So you liked my nonsense, eh? I can talk to you all day if you like," now Jack was teasing him, but in a way someone close to you would do. Playfully. Not being mean at all. "I'll have to ask you to please come closer. I want you to... to see something." He grabbed his compass again. Throwing caution to the wind like this when it came to his emotions was unlike him... but he figured he had nothing to lose.

"My compass shows you what you want," He added, voice suddenly soft now. "What you really want. And I'd like to show you where it points to." Because it points to you, he thought. And I don't think it bothers me... at all.

"Ready?" He asked then, looking into James' eyes. Hopeful and afraid at the same time. Both emotions were a first for Jack Sparrow, the man who kept saying the sea was his first and only love. Oh how wrong he was about that.

James, standing beside the bed with his cup half-raised, blinked at the pirate as Jack sprawled dramatically back into the pillows — very much alive and very much himself, if a bit paler and less obnoxiously loud than usual.

“Yes, you are,” James muttered dryly, his lips twitching faintly at the corners. “A disobedient scoundrel, an insufferable menace, and clearly in no hurry to make my life any easier.”

But the words lacked bite — spoken more like an old complaint between reluctant friends than an officer to a prisoner. His eyes, despite himself, softened a little when Jack smiled up at him without sarcasm for once.

“Hungry, are you?” James arched an eyebrow. “Well, I suppose I should count that as a good sign. I’ll see what I can scrounge up from the galley. But if I find you sneaking out the window the moment I turn my back—”

He let the sentence hang, half-hearted at best.

When Jack brought up the nonsense again, James gave a sharp scoff, his eyes narrowing — though his ears betrayed him by turning a bit pink.

“I said I didn’t mind it, Sparrow,” he retorted, but not unkindly. “Don’t get ideas. You were feverish. Delirious. You probably thought I was a barmaid for half the evening.” He took a quick sip of the rum, as if to steady himself.

The blush deepened when Jack motioned for him to come closer.

“What is it now—” he started, but froze as the compass was lifted. His expression shifted, suspicion and mild exasperation written clearly across it.

“Oh, that thing,” he scoffed, folding his arms. “You mean your broken compass? I’ve heard your stories, Sparrow. Points to what you want most in the world, except when it doesn't.” James shook his head, lips pressing into a thin line — though the tension didn’t feel quite like anger. It was something more guarded. Something warier. “A bit rich, even for you.”

Still… he stepped closer. Maybe because something in Jack’s voice had gone quiet — not sly or flippant or soaked in bravado, but sincere. And that unnerved him more than he cared to admit.

“Fine,” James muttered, standing at the edge of the bed now, looking down at the compass. His arms still crossed, but his posture had gone stiff, as if bracing himself. “Let’s see it, then"

"You'll be stuck with me for a while, mate." Jack stated, looking up at James. "Don't worry, I know I'm crazy, but not crazy enough to attempt an escape when I can barely stand. I wouldn't make it too far."

"You can just call me Jack, that is, if you want." the pirate said, pushing himself to sit upright, compass in hand. It didn't escape his attention James was blushing, too. "And my compass isn't broken, it's unique. Alright now, let's see..."

He opened the lid of the compass again. The needle spun around, once, twice, before stopping and pointing clearly at the Commodore. Jack bit his lip and tore his gaze away from the compass, to look at James. It was clear from the look on his face that he was anxious, almost afraid... waiting to see how James would react.

"Cat's out of the bag, eh?" Jack mumbled, then held the compass up for James to take. "Would you like to see where it points for you?"

Jack slept for hours, uninterrupted now that the worst of the pain was gone. The sun set, then came up again when the pirate stirred, and opened his eyes, still unused to the new surroundings. It took him a minute to get his bearings, and when he remembered what happened before he fell asleep, that blush colored his cheeks once again.

"James?" He mumbled, rubbing his eyes. He sat up with a groan, his joints stiff and bones aching still, but his fever has gone down at least, and he could think clearly again. "Gods... I did talk a lot of nonsense, didn't I? Except..." he paused, as he attempted to stand, weak and wobbly, but still managing somehow.

"Except when I said I don't mind being stuck with you, mate." He said quietly, without sarcasm. It was the truth, plain and honest. Jack did mean every word of it. A rare moment from the pirate.

"Please get me some rum, I feel like me bones are falling apart." Just a swig would do, to dull the ache. Jack wanted to keep his head clear, so that he could somehow make sure he doesn't end up hanging from a rope. Though after what happened between the Commodore and him, how James didn't let him suffer alone in that cell... well, Jack had a feeling James wouldn't send him to the gallows.

And then there it was again -- that longing, like when Jack longed for the sea or freedom, except it wasn't for those now. Muttering under his breath, Jack reached for his trustworthy compass still dangling from his sash, and checked it. The needle spun around, then settled, pointing towards no other than Commodore James Norrington.

"Oh." Jack's eyes widened and he blushed furiously, now. How in the blazes will he explain to James what he felt? He was at a loss for words. A first time when Captain Jack Sparrow didn't know what to say. He just stood there, compass in hand, eyes wide. Frozen to the spot and speechless.

They were supposed to be enemies, and yet... something just felt off about that for Jack. Like it wasn't true anymore.

James woke with a start — neck stiff, back sore from sleeping in a chair that wasn’t meant for it, and a vague grogginess that reminded him just how long he’d been out. He winced as he stretched, rolling his shoulders and letting out a quiet groan. His first instinct was to check the door — only to remember with a flash of clarity that he wasn't alone and that he’d put Jack in his bed.

The bed which was now… empty.

James jolted upright, heart skipping for the briefest of moments, until he caught sight of Jack, standing — swaying slightly — but upright. Awake. Coherent. Not delirious or deathly pale. His skin still looked far too sallow for comfort, and the pirate was clearly in pain, but his eyes had focus again. Bright. Alive.

James let out a slow breath of relief. He hadn’t realized just how much hope he’d pinned on that look.

“You're supposed to be resting, Sparrow,” he muttered, rubbing the side of his neck with a wince. His voice was hoarse from sleep, deeper, slower — unguarded. “But I suppose expecting obedience from you is like expecting a cat to salute.”

“If you’re strong enough to insult my furniture and demand rum, I suppose you’re on the mend.” His tone was dry, but something fond glimmered behind his eyes. He reached for the small bottle from the desk where he’d left it the night before, uncorking it and pouring just a bit into the same tin cup.

“Don’t push it,” James warned lightly as he offered the rum. He didn’t add how much it had shaken him to see Jack on the brink. He didn’t need to. It lingered in the way his hand hesitated just a moment too long against Jack’s when he passed him the cup.

James gave a small sigh, letting his gaze linger on the pirate now upright and talking again — irritating him, yes, already talking at him, yes — but breathing, whole, stubbornly alive.

“You spoke nonsense, yes” he said, voice softer now, “but… it was the kind I… didn’t mind hearing. If I'm being brutally honest”

He moved to pour himself a small amount as well — not for the pain, but to ease the storm of something unspoken swirling inside him. First time Jack would ever see him drink. Still unaware that Jack’s compass was quietly betraying him.

“Now sit before you keel over. The last thing I need is for you to faint dramatically into my arms. Again.”

But truthfully… a small part of him wouldn’t have minded.
