I honestly love this moment so much? They’re saying one thing, but their body language is screaming something different. Casey tells her mom she’s fine to deal with Vicki, but everything about her body language (fake smile, hunched in shoulder, clutching her clipboard like a shield) says ‘I feel threatened and I’m upset’.

And Derek’s response is totally instinctive. If you pointed out what he was doing, he’d be as confused as anyone. He sees her shrink in on herself and his lizard brain just reacts without even running it by his conscious mind.

And Casey immediately relaxes. She sees him come up behind her and she automatically exhales and lets her shoulders drop a little. And then when he’s beside her, she lets down her guard on that side of her body. The shoulder closest to him drops all the way, and she tilts her head so her neck is exposed to him but protected from whoever comes through the door.

Of course, immediately after this, Derek remembers that he’s a fifteen year old idiot and turns on Casey, but that doesn’t change the fact that his first instinct was to protect her, or that Casey’s first instinct was to trust him to have her back.
