The Octopus Project -- Whitby

I've been pretty obsessed with this track for the last few days. It will burrow into your head. Resistance is futile.

Track three from the album Fever Forms. Get it! It's good. I ordered the vinyl from Peek-A-Boo records and it came with a handwritten thank you note in my name; what swell people.

James Brown -- Live Set from 68'

This band's so tight they couldn't be ripped apart. Laying what was probably the fattest beats at the time: watch the break down at 2:25 with the bass coming in on top. You're brain implode? It should've; this is still the gold standard and that song was released 46 years ago. The James Brown performance itself is extra credit at that point, and that's a shit load of extra credit.

Also includes, but not limited to: Jesus level floating feet, guitars that sound like their made of a Pacific wave, bad ass camera push-in at 0:27, vocals that have since been impossible to duplicate, swagger that's 2 standard deviations beyond the Bell curve.

The Octopus Project -- Sharpteeth [Video]

I'm not sure how, but The Octopus Project put out a new record a month ago, called Fever Forms, and I'm only hearing it now. Ahh! That's problematic.

But what's not is that they've killed it per usual. Upon first listen, it seems like an organic next step from their last album. Sharpteeth closes the LP with their familiar "hide the beautiful melody in the overpowering wall of sound" trick. I'm not sure how they do it so well every time.

Includes, but not limited to: extra long crescendo, soaring vocal harmonies (a non-usual addition), theremin duet (always classy), dual drum kits, extra crunchy guitar feedback/distortion, weird fuzzy masks

Ohio Players -- Fire [Live]

The Players killin it for TV in 1975. This may not be the deepest song they every released but it's hard to argue with here.

Includes: drum solo, two guitar solos, full member list intro with accompanying astrological signs, an "O.H.I.O." crowd chant bridge, costumed dancing groups, more wah peddle than any sane person can handle, Sugarfoot's teeth, and a scat outro -- bubbles and VFX flames courtesy of the production crew.
