first they phased out the 22 episode season then they phased out the 13 episode season and now they’re phasing out the 10 episode season like can you guys go watch fucking movies or something and stop trying to “tighten” television
We need to go back to more episodes because shows can’t be action or drama all the time, there needs to be breathing room for both the audience and the characters. There need to be good filler episodes where the characters get to just have fun and develop outside of the main story. Side quests and downtime are important to storytelling. We need to see the characters be regular people with regular problems in between the big stuff.
Could this be a cultural thing?
A lot of UK/European/Australian shows are maybe 6-12 episodes a season. I feel like the thinking is for this view “Tell a story, we don’t need to string it out”.
I’m not advocating one way or the other, just observing cultural/perception difference
Decloaking just to drop my two cents/pence because I'm a US expat living in the UK, I am also old enough to remember genuine mini-series events (like the adaptations of Shogun, The Thornbirds, and North & South) while growing up in the US, and I cannot sing the praises of shorter TV seasons enough! I like challenging material and sometimes cinema run times don't have enough leeway to do that material justice while 20+ episodes of television would dilute it to the point of having little to no impact or end up introducing multiple plot-points that end up getting lost (looking at you GoT). 6-12 episodes is a sweet spot and, when done correctly, leaves the viewer satisfied with plenty of enjoyment in the source material. You still get to experience the anticipation for each episode but aren't left an exhausted, confused hot mess chasing what-ifs or shadows by the end of that arc because mini-series formats DEMAND quality story-telling and tight pacing. Imo it is totally a matter of excellent quality vs mind-numbing quantity. ❄️💚❄️
