Fandom has GOT to learn how to depict characters with trauma without making it either the whole of their personalities or passive woobies that need saving by their Love Interest

I think fanfic writers can write whatever they want. There are many reasons to write - working through personal issues or fantasies or whatever - so it can be the most OOC, self-indulgent stuff, and it’s a perfectly valid reason to write it. If it doesn’t vibe with me, I just won’t read it. 

But I have to say, I do wish there were more fics focusing on Shouto’s personality, beyond being an abuse victim, because he is working so hard to rise above his origin and there are so many things about his character that I find so interesting: 

- his shifting view of his quirk as he’s discovering his fire and the good he can do with it as well as learning to integrate his two quirks and see himself in them.

- the way he’s trying to define himself in positive terms (rather than just not-Endeavor) and how paying attention to his classmates or people he meets help him to discover how others see him

- the way he learns to participate and even put his ideas out there - he started at the periphery of the class, cold and disinterested, and is progressively moving ever closer to them, warm, engaged and observant

- the new experiences - he’s like a child on so many levels, having so many firsts that for others are mundane, but for Shouto are new and miraculous and how he hoards these moments as a treasure, so he can share them with his mum in his letters (like the All Might origami)

- how he’s so incredibly loyal to his friends and appreciates them

- the way he connects with his siblings. Not the imaginary family that never existed, but discovering these near strangers who lived under the same roof, and who also have personalities and interests beyond being fellow victims. Give me Shouto & Natsuo and their awkward but persistent attempts to learn to connect.

- Shouto being naturally good with children, because he’s sincere and he never talks down to them. He’s awkward and serious at first, but once he warms up, the children see right to the goodness of his heart.

- Shouto making new friends, all the time. Not just Deku, but others that he befriends on his own. Sometimes against their will. 

- Shouto becoming a Kami-Mina-Sero special project as they teach him all kinds of new and important life skills: youtube channels, proper use of memes, decrypting texts, emojis and stickers, fast food, pop culture, manga... just helping him become a less of an alien and more of a normal teenager

- fics that let Shouto show his pettiness, his rebel streak, him standing up to authority figures

- fics that display his off-beat sense of humour or his unintentional funny / oblivious moments

- fics that allow him to be smart and competent, yet also dumb as a brick

- mutual support. He’s awkward about it, but he wants to support his friends too.

- blunt, detached honesty for the emotionally hitting moments, but never wallowing in self-pity. 

- Shouto realizing that some things he did were wrong, and being able to critically look at his failures without beating himself up about it - a detached self-analysis

- Shouto having a dumb celebrity crush

There are so many sides of him, so many interesting angles to discover, and for me the most fascinating aspect of his character that despite the truck-load of trauma and tragic origins, he doesn’t let himself to be defined by it. He is so much more in big and small ways, constantly learning to assert himself.

You know what’s strange. I thought this was fake. And not because I don’t think people are greedy but because I thought this was meant to mirror the many many sites of Indigenous peoples like the Directions Tree or the verry ancient cactus that only started fruiting after some odd hundred years, that have been or are slated to be bulldozed.

I thought someone was making a point with these images to say “look see, you’ll care when it’s European. When that heritage site brings in money and is recognized world round because of its constant appearance in movies and TV.”

Except I googled it to double check.
