It's been a while since I posted anything on this blog. Recently, I've been reminiscing how much Young Royals meant to me those horrible months of helplessness in '23 and '24. I cannot believe that it's '26 now. I really regret not writing the fics I started. I have these ridiculously detailed outline I have very little memory of writing. Sometimes, I take myself too seriously. '24 me needed to find her chill.
Reasons you (yes, you, good internet citizens of the young royals fandom!) should consider writing saraugust this kinktober:
Both Sara and August are carrying some hangups around shame and social roles. Safely negotiated kink can be great for experimenting with those dynamics and working through those feelings!
There’s a significant overlap between people who are interested in kink and people who have autism and ADHD. Sara is statistically likely to be kinky.
August has never been canonically labeled neurodivergent (though I do sometimes enjoy the headcanon of him being a missed ADHD diagnosis) but he does come across as having some sensory-seeking behaviors (and potentially some sensory-sensitivities too.) And I just think this works well with kink?
Yes, Sara gave up horses, but the show never said she gave up riding crops.
It’s already a forbidden romance (TM) so you might as well make it non-vanilla!
Imagine how much it would annoy the monarchy.
I N C O N C L U S I O N
Most of Young Royals fandom: “I would like August to be slapped in the face.”
Me: “I would like August to be slapped in the face but in like, a consensual pre-negotiated sexy way.”
I remember I kept coming across the trailer in June 2021 and being unimpressed by what looked like Swedish Elite. The only reason YR ended up on my watch list was this post by author Jonas Gardell:
It took me a week or two more to actually start watching, but once I did, I could not stop. So, my thanks for everything this show brought into my life go out to the entire cast and crew - but also to one of my favourite Swedish authors for that final nudge!
In that spirit, I want to promote Gardell's own stuff here as three of his shows are now available worldwide on SVT Play. There are no subs, so you can put those YR-inspired Swedish skills to good use! I've written English blurbs under the cut.
That happy GIF of Rasmus and Benjamin breaks my heart. Anyway...
De halvt dolda (2009, 4 episodes)
Tells the stories of four families living in Stockholm with particular emphasis on the children. In the 1970s, there are three brothers, rebelling against their religious father and dealing with the loss of their mother. In the 1990s, there's a young skinhead with a little brother and an alcoholic mum, and a withdrawn closeted young boy from a suburban family who is bullied by the skinhead and his friends. The fourth family consists of two brothers in the 1970s, one of whom is an abusive husband.
Won the Kristallen award for best drama.
Torka aldrig tårar utan handskar (2011, 3 episodes)
Probably Gardell's best-known work, this is a tragic story about a young gay couple and their friend group, set during the AIDS epidemic in 1980s Stockholm. The story starts with small-town boy Rasmus moving into the big city and being taken under the wing of an out-and-proud man named Paul. Through him and his friends, Rasmus meets and falls in love with Benjamin, a closeted Jehovah's Witness. All their lives are soon overshadowed by the new sickness sweeping through town.
Won the Kristallen award for best drama.
De dagar som blommorna blommar (2019, 3 episodes)
A heavy drama about three boys whose families are neighbours in 1970s Stockholm. There are tensions bubbling under and facades being upheld by their parents, with long-lasting impact on their lives. In the 1990s, one of the guys has decided to take his family to Estonia to discover his heritage (with tragic consequences). Another is still stuck under the abusive influence of his older brother, while the third is directing a play about his parents' divorce.
This one got slightly mixed reviews; Aftonbladet gave it four stars while Svenska Dagbladet gave only two. Apparently, the jumps between timelines can be hard to follow and the story gets melodramatic at times, but the acting is top notch. I didn't actually get the chance to watch it when it came out so I intend to do it this summer!
Something that really sets Wille and Simon apart from other queer ships is that when we say their love language is physical touch, IT REALLY IS PHYSICAL TOUCH. And I’m not speaking of just sex. Over the course of the show, the amount of touching between them is astronomical. And that’s really something rarely seen in queer media. There may be moments here or there, but often times there’s a lack of physical contact unless it’s for “the plot”. Wille and Simon feel like a real couple in the way they’re always physically reaching out for each other.
Yet another AO3 bot situation - please spread the word!
Hi, it's me again, the person who wrote that viral post about fanfiction plagiarism! Today I'm here to warn you about abuse perpetrated by bots who have stolen AO3 usernames.
There's currently an epidemic of bots going around leaving (apparently random) horrible, hateful comments on people's fics. This isn't the first time bots have invaded AO3, but the big problem with this wave is that they're using real AO3 usernames to do it.
I learned about this when another writer contacted me after receiving the following comment on their story:
Now, while that is my username, I DEFINITELY did not leave this comment (and anyone who would leave something like that on a fic should be slapped! What an awful thing to post). This fic is in a completely unrelated fandom that I have never participated in, nor has that author participated in any of my fandoms, so the probability of it being some intentional fandom drama thing to make me look bad is also low.
The writer whose fic the comment was left on enlisted the aid of some friends and tracked down other guest comments with unrelated usernames attached, which is pretty strong evidence that they are being left by bots at random.
The TL;DR: If you receive a cruel comment from a (Guest) with an actual AO3 username attached, it's most likely from a bot. Please do not lash out at or dogpile the AO3 user who owns that name, and who in all likelihood has no idea that their name has been hijacked for evil.
If finding this kind of comment on a fic, even left by a bot, is likely to upset you, I would recommend changing your comment settings so that only users who are logged in can leave comments. To do this, edit your story settings, and under "Privacy," select the radio button that says "Only registered users can comment," as shown below.
Please spread the word to other AO3 users! And if you see mean guest comments on other fics, maybe let the author know that it's probably from a bot and not a real person who thinks their writing is bad.
My current Young Royals thoughts: Wille telling Boris that he felt lonely in his role as Prince, having to keep everything private so that people didn't take advantage. Even when Erik was alive. He was lonely, but he was okay with it because he knew Erik was there.
When he meets Simon, he experiences what it's like to not feel lonely for the first time. Simon just gets him. They're actually really good friends. Simon shares himself: his friends, his activities, where he grew up, his home, his mum. Even Simon's mum and friends treat Wille as a regular person. Simon allows Wille in, to be seen by him. He is not guarded or fake around Wille.
Simon is honest with him and real and sees him, not his role. He sees him as a person, not an empty symbol. He treats him with the respect of an equal. The relief Wille must feel to be able to finally be and discover himself through this companionship.
He describes the loss of that to Boris. He tells Boris he made a friend who made him experience that new feeling. The loss of that relationship has been so hard for having tasted what it's like to be seen.
Simon is so vulnerable and open with Wille because Wille saw him as a person first. Wille recognised him and wanted to get to know him. Wille saw his heart in his singing, then his mind in his class discussions, and decided that this was a person who he wanted to walk alongside. Wille's deep stare is part of his always noticing nuances about Simon. He reads his moods. He's always aware of where he is.
In season three, he is too distracted by the increasing pressure brought on by Farima's demands on him as well as the impending doom of his mother's illness, to notice that Simon is falling apart. In this season, Wille is not noticing when Simon is showing distress on his face. Where before he spent so much time noticing, now his attention is elsewhere.
Simon is starting to feel the loneliness that Wille feels, as part of the royal machinery. The poisoned royal cake has started to take its effect.
