Solas is a reflection of how you treat him.
Forgive my rambling, but I keep having this persistent thought related to Solas and wanted to voice it despite it probably being something some may intuitively know. It revolves around his explanations of spirits and how "if you expect a spirit to be a demon, it will adapt." We've all heard the theory that Solas might have once been a spirit himself, and whether you believe that or not, it has interesting connotations concerning the dread wolf. Pride demons have six eyes, just as most visual representations of Fen'Harel do, and Solas's name itself means Pride. A lot of inquisition stems around how Solas reacts to you, your decisions, your sense of morals and how when you first meet him he is very closed off and guarded. People who dislike Solas describe him as arrogant while those that love him describe him as the opposite. I guess my argument is that this is what he was telling you about. He adapts. You treat him like he's arrogant and he becomes more so. You treat him fairly and with respect, he softens and returns the affection. You get what you put into Solas, just as how mages should be interacting with spirits/demons, how he is used to treating them. It makes it more tragic in my opinion that some are incapable of seeing him as better because they keep putting out expectations that he's evil or bad, so that's what he portrays himself as. He's such an island if you treat him poorly in Trespasser, while most of us Solavellans can clearly see how raw and open he is. This reflection of how you treated him may have dire consequences in DA4, whether it be related more to appearance (say the demon dread wolf depicted in the murals vs. The wolf lavellan sees in her dreams), to actual combat / story progression. Solas gives you everything in terms of how to reach him. It's up to you and your own expectations of what you'll see: the spirit who seeks to rectify a wrong or the demon who will destroy a world. Solas adapts accordingly.
All of this.
