Two weeks ago, I had the privilege of meeting a few members of Michigan’s Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys at Folk Alliance International in Kansas City. Not only do they have a fantastic and classic bluegrass sound, but they are groovy. Lindsay’s mesmerizing voice contributes to the band’s unique sound. I can’t wait to see how far they go.
There is no shortage of folk and country songs about booze. But what makes the Mandolin Orange tune “Waltz About Whiskey” so enchanting is its effortlessness. Watch the rising folk duo perform the song live for FolkAlley.
This tune is not only comprised of a harmonious duet with the addition of Nicki Bluhm, but also a concise yet complete bluegrass sound that The Brothers Comatose so often give listeners. I’m in love with the instrumental fiddle in-between verses as well as the banjo fillers here and there.
This has been on repeat the last few days. Beautiful cover that certainly hits home for me. Mandolin Orange’s sound here reminds me of Lonesome Whistle on their newest album, Blindfaller. Check it out!

Fell in love with this as soon as I heard it on my Spotify discover weekly playlist. Got in contact with the lead singer and caught up! I love the ability for music to bring people together. Check out the rest of their album if you like this. It varies from folk to jazz to blues.
Green Green Rocky Road - Dave Van Ronk (Cover by Oscar Isaac)
I must give credit where credit is due, obviously to Dave Van Ronk in this instance, but damn does Isaac do an incredible cover of this song for the Coen Brothers’ film “Inside Llewyn Davis,” a cinematic adaptation of Van Ronk’s autobiography, The Mayor of MacDougal Street.
One thing I love so much about folk music is that it is constantly adapting, changing, and arranging original songs in different and creative ways. Dave Van Ronk is such an understated artist, and to see his work in a successful feature brings me so much joy. If you love this song as much as I do, do yourself a favor and check out the rest of the soundtrack, along with some more of Van Ronk’s work.
Mess Is Mine - Vance Joy
At this point, I'm sure many (if not all) of you have heard Vance Joy. His song Riptide has generated a lot of buzz recently, but in my opinion Mess Is Mine is catchier, and is more enjoyable to listen to. This is currently on repeat on my iTunes!
The Barr Brothers - Beggar in the Morning
The Barr Brothers are quickly becoming one of my favorite groups, especially due to the way they balance music and lyrics. For example, in this song, the lyrics are great, but aren't nearly as heavily emphasized as the melody and the beat of the song, which aren't to be interrupted. Perfect balance in this song.
Neil Young - Comes A Time
I know I promised a contemporary folk blog, but I can't help but share this. Neil Young has shaped my music interests and has influenced me so much over the years, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to share one of my favorite upbeat folk songs.
The Band Concord - The Wolf
These guys are going to make it BIG. This is my friend's band, and they have so much talent it's unfair. They have plenty of awesome songs, but there's something about the buildup of this one, and the harmonies at the beginning that really draw me in. I know you'll love it as much as I do.
The Wood Brothers - Luckiest Man
The Wood Brothers remind me of a folky Gavin DeGraw. However, they also have a different sound that almost reminds me of The Wallflowers or Bob Dylan, but very easy listening.
Gravel Kings - Left Alone
I am so surprised that this band isn't more popular. They have such a clean-cut sound, and are so full of life. It's catchy, but folky enough to not be repetitive or annoying. You'll be seeing more posts about these guys.
The Avett Brothers - Laundry Room
Ah, The Avett Brothers. I never get sick of them, as their brotherly harmonies never fail to boost my mood. In addition, their incredible talent for creating beautiful folksy melodies never seems to cease. My favorite part of this song is the jam they do at the end.
The Brothers Comatose - Morning Time (ft. Nicki Bluhm)
This simple duet is one that makes ya feel warm inside. Their voices blend very well, and the simplicity of this tune makes me want to listen to this stuff for hours. Enjoy.
The Head and the Heart - Down in the Valley
One of my favorites, this song captures exactly what kind of music I love. The harmonies and the chemistry the band members have between one another really emphasize their love for their music.
Shakey Graves - Dearly Departed (ft. Esmé Patterson)
This song has so much energy, an energy that reminds me of why I've fallen in love with folk music. Music that makes you want to jump up and dance even on a shitty day; music that gives you purpose. This song, to me, is everything that music should be.
