In the TV series Charmed, the concept of the "Power of Three," represented by the Halliwell sisters—Prue, Piper, and Phoebe—can be interpreted through Jacques Lacan's Borromean knot, which intertwines the Real, the Imaginary, and the Symbolic. The sisters' individual powers and personalities embody these three orders, and their unity as "The Charmed Ones" reflects how these elements must remain interconnected for a balanced psyche. Lacan's knot suggests that the human experience is structured by these three realms, where each one affects the others in ways that create a coherent whole. In Charmed, the sisters' powers—telekinesis, freezing time, and premonition—can be seen as analogs to these domains.
Prue, the eldest sister, embodies the Imaginary order. The Imaginary is associated with images, identity, and illusion, and Prue's power of telekinesis relates to manipulating objects in space, a physical manifestation of the image she has of herself as the protector and leader. She struggles with her identity and the expectations placed upon her, reflecting the tensions within the Imaginary. Piper, the middle sister, represents the Symbolic order, which relates to language, structure, and social rules. Piper’s power to freeze time metaphorically suggests her ability to control the flow of events, managing the symbolic laws and structures of the world, such as marriage, family, and the responsibilities of being the “heart” of the family.
Phoebe, the youngest sister, represents the Real—the chaotic, unknowable, and raw aspect of life that resists symbolic representation. Her power of premonition connects her to the unpredictable and uncontrollable elements of existence, as she gains insight into future events but cannot always alter or explain them. In Lacanian terms, the Real is often traumatic, much like Phoebe’s sometimes chaotic personal journey. Together, the Halliwell sisters, like the Borromean knot, maintain their strength only when all three elements are interconnected; if one sister—or one of the orders—falls away, the balance of their power and their family is broken. Thus, Charmed metaphorically reflects Lacan’s philosophical model through its exploration of the sisters' bond and the manifestation of their individual powers.

“This is the strange way of the world, that people who simply want to love are instead forced to become warriors.”
— Lauren Oliver, Requiem
when my local friendgroup hit our late 20's/early 30's we all metamorphosed into ancient romans and/or redwall characters bc now whenever we have 'get togethers' ppl are always bringing over cheeses and crusty breads and cured meats and olives and grapes and ales etc

Everyone be like Oh Janeway you're being reckless because you looove Captain Chakotay too much and that is clouding your judgment like Bestie, you're the one who sent her on the mission, you're clearly just as thirsty for J/C to happen as the rest of us, but are too much of a chicken to admit it
