Z.A.T.O. // I Love the World and Everything In It
asya'll be thinking the most mundane shit ever and then pull smth like "i'm a dirty swine in the beautiful world i was never meant to see" out of the blue and boom you're in shambles
one thing i really love about asya's transmission at the end of zato is that like, throughout the story, we see asya misattributing other feelings and experiences to the idea of love. the only specific example that's coming to me rn is how she clearly feels hurt and upset with vadim for knowing about the car garage/shop, but instead we get to see her brute force wrangle her inner monologue into being thankful. asya's inner monologue feels almost violent for lack of a better word sometimes, with the way in which she adamantly refuses to accept any other emotion or perspective other than endless gratitude and love. love isn't supposed to hurt, but she says at some point that she loves the world so much it hurts.
that said, asya clearly does find some kind of closure with herself, even if through tosya. she does still have a genuine, honest love for the world and (mostly, if not) everything in it. by the time she sends her transmission, she's seemingly forgotten most of the things that had her twisting her own perception and calling her feelings love when that's clearly not what they were (at least, not entirely). she's forgotten, and finds some closure towards herself with tosya, and asya genuinely loves everyone and everything.
but if someone were to argue that asya's transmission may not be so clear cut, that maybe the love she's sharing with the world is partially the misattributed kind, is partially a forced wrangling of herself into something palatable, something that "makes up for" her transgressions of simply existing..... i personally don't necessarily think that's the case, but there is an argument to be made for that that i find fascinating. asya's love is true but her transmission doesn't deny her "uglier" feelings either, because to love oneself and everything in the world is to love all of it.
idk, im kinda just saying words, but i really enjoy asya as a character and i think it's interesting to try and pry at her transmission a bit too :]

Reblog this and tell me what was your biggest crying over a piece of fiction. You can be vague if you don't want to spoil.
Happy 10th Anniversary to Mob!!!🥳💕 (the new anime short is so cute!!!!)
i finished reading our dreams at dusk and wow what a masterpiece. i wish it were longer only because i loved it so much -- the visual metaphors and storytelling, the grounded cast of characters who all felt like fully fledged people in their own right, the insistence on kindness but also it being okay to not understand others and rather that letting people exist exactly as they are is far better than pigeonholing them for your comfort; the community that tasuku fosters with those at the lounge and how it makes him want to live again, seeing other queer people live full and messy but beautiful lives, that in spite of the sometimes cruel reality of being queer there is still a space for him, a sofa to sink into and feel safe. god i love this manga
A fun thing about Our Dreams at Dusk is there is such an abundance of visual metaphor; but it's heavily implied that Someone-san being able to fly isn't one of them. Like it's a very down to earth story, not a lick of anything supernatural... except for one person who can just straight up fly but that's not really important.

If I had a nickel for every queer manga I’ve read that featured star-like sparks as visual metaphors for love, I’d have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
you know I need to stop making memes and just drop another list of queer manga. Is what the public needs I fear.
