Carrie Fisher on bipolar disorder. (x)
I am mentally ill. I can say that. I am not ashamed of that. I survived that, I’m still surviving it, but bring it on. Better me than you. I don’t want to be a victim.
- Carrie Fisher
So a few days ago, Vanity Fair published this piece
It’s pretty scathing. And a genuinely good restaurant review piece.
Then, about 14 hours later, our president-elect (who’s too busy to go to security briefings), took to Twitter to respond
Vanity Fair took it and ran with it.
When you click that banner?
So, of course, I subscribed. And I bought the $5 gift subscription for my mom, who’s…VERY republican.
I’m going to be spending the next 4 years supporting every publication that speaks out in any way against Trump. Yeah, that means Vanity Fair and Teen Vogue (if you haven’t read their article on how Trump is gaslighting America, you need to get on it). And if that means also getting some fantastic articles on pop culture and skin care, I’m on board.
Fun fact, Vanity Fair is edited by Graydon Carter, who has a longstanding feud with Trump. In fact, he was one of the first people to note how tiny pawed Trump was when he called him a “short-fingered vulgarian” in Spy back in 1988.
So the review was totally a hit piece meant to improve sales and poke fun at a long term nemesis.
What is REALLY cool is how VF, Carter, and Conde Nast in general handled things for Tina Nguyen, the writer of the piece.
Naturally writing something as savage as her review was going to invite hate, which any journalist is familiar with and well inoculated to.
But Nguyen was going after Donald Trump, who rivals only pal Peter Thiel and wife, Melinda Trump, when it comes to passionate hatred for journalists. While Thiel and Melinda like to sue their enemies into oblivion, taking out anyone one who stands in their way and wrecking legal precedent in the US in the process, Trump likes to sic his followers on journalists.
So good guy Carter and friends actually went out of their way to protect Nguyen. They screened calls to her office line and set the whole VF PR team on a mission to find and stop any attempts to dox Nguyen.
And this is so so so vital. Generally speaking writers are expected to deal with the hate themselves unless it’s life threatening. They’ve had the luxury of decades of dealing with US Presidents who’s nastiest response would be to kick someone out of their press pool or deny access.
Trump AGGRESSIVELY pursues journalists who personally insult him or his “policies.” He won’t necessarily send police to their homes (we hope), but he will mobilize his few million followers, and as we’ve seen with Gamergate–a bully movement that absolutely fed into Trump–that’s a VERY DANGEROUS THING.
A Language Family Tree (by Minna Sundberg)
Minna Sundberg’s illustration maps the relationships between Indo-European and Uralic languages. (On Tumblr) The creator of the webcomic Stand Still. Stay Silent, put the illustration together to show why some of the characters in her comic were able to understand each other despite speaking different languages. She wanted to show how closely related Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic were to each other, and how Finnish came from distinct linguistic roots.

Every time this is on my dash, it’s an automatic reblog.
Look at me. Look me in the eye. On November the 8th, 2016, one of two things will happen: Hillary Clinton will become president, or Donald Trump will become president. These are the only two possibilities. The superdelegates aren’t going to switch. An indictment isn’t coming. There is no third possibility. There is no space between the spaces where you can hide. Every vote for Donald Trump requires two Hilary Clinton votes to overcome. A Hillary Clinton vote can only be overcome by two Donald Trump votes. If you stay home, a Donald Trump vote doubles its power. This is the real, actual reality of the situation. There is not one other option.
And there’s no ctrl-alt-del for the election. Read up on 2000 if you doubt this.
And to those of us who supported Bernie, he WANTS you to vote for Hillary. If you believe in him and his mission you will follow his advice. He knows that writing his name in, or voting for anyone else besides Clinton, is effectively voting for Trump.
Refusing to vote for Hillary is a vote for Trump, no matter how much you scream and say how it’s not. And if you’re standing by to do nothing in regards to taking down Trump, then you ARE grouped along with the rest of the people in this country that ruin things for everybody else.
No, seriously, go read about the presidential election in 2000.
If you weren’t old enough to remember and/or understand the ramifications of the 2000 election, I WILL TELL YOU.
Do not let Trump win. Please. I beg you. I went to grad school with people who voted for Nader in 2000 and my FB feed is full of them begging others not to make the same mistake they did. Bernie has his priorities straight, and the priority is stopping Trump.
And if that doesn’t do it for you, this is the Republican platform 2016. It calls for:
Conversion therapy for queer kids. Let me repeat that. CONVERSION THERAPY FOR QUEER KIDS. Some members of the RNC even wanted to endorse it more explicitly than they did.
Zealous opposition to same-sex marriage. Here’s the quote: “Our laws and our government’s regulations should recognize marriage as the union of one man and one woman and actively promote married family life as the basis of a stable and prosperous society. For that reason, as explained elsewhere In this platform, we do not accept the Supreme Court’s redefinition of marriage and we urge its reversal, whether through judicial reconsideration or a constitutional amendment returning control over marriage to the States.”
Reversing the Obama administration’s order to grant trans students access to restrooms, locker rooms, etc. The Republicans feel that such things should be based on biological gender, not gender identity.
Treating internet porn as “a public health crisis.” Quote: “Pornography, with his harmful effects, especially on children, has become a public health crisis that is destroying the life of millions. We encourage states to continue to fight this public menace and pledge our commitment to children’s safety and wellbeing[.]”
Gender discrimination. To quote Time magazine: “[T]he platform committee voted against including the word “gender” in a list of types of discrimination that should be opposed. On Tuesday, one member described the attempt to add that word to a list including qualities like race, sex and creed as a “sneak attack.”
Repeal of the Johnson Amendment. The Johnson Amendment currently prevents churches and other tax-exempt organizations from organizing politically, endorsing political candidates, etc. Repealing it would throw separation of church and state out the window…not to mention that it would give evangelical churches and televangelist organizations much more power, driving the country further to the right.
If you vote for Trump, these are some of the planks of the platform you’re voting for.
Please, PLEASE, register and make sure to keep track of where you can go to cast your vote as well.
Also make sure you register Well in advance. Deadline where I live is October 11th for new voters. If you don’t want to wait at the polls call your local elections office and ask them to send you a vote by mail/absentee ballot. It makes voting simple. You just fill out your ballot and send or take it in to the elections office.
wtf??
me every 2 seconds while watching Wayward Pines (via randomwithoutcoffee)
when we first got married i had to psych myself up every time to say “my wife” to a new person. it was awkward because with “girlfriend” a lot of people would just assume i meant “friend,” and of course “fianceé” is gender-neutral when spoken, so we’d always had plausible deniability. but the meaning of “wife” is pretty unavoidable. still, i made myself do it on principle, and slowly but surely it became natural.
now i love saying “my wife,” to everyone all the time. i love saying it to the old woman distributing the strawberries at the farm share, asking if she knows where i can still get rhubarb because every summer i make my wife a pie. i love saying it to the gay employee helping me at crate and barrel, telling him i’m buying these glasses because my wife and i both had them growing up, and seeing his eyes light up. i love saying it to friends of friends and to new acquaintances and to potential coworkers and to the women at the laundromat. i love being aggressively out, and i love having such an easy way to be aggressively out. i love being the first woman with a wife someone has ever met, making our existence part of their reality. i love being visible for other lgbt people who might feel a little less alone knowing i’m there, which helps me push past the fear when it comes. most of all, i love not hiding. i love saying “my wife” and i love my wife.
after one year away from tumblr I accidentally find out WAYWARD PINES IS BACK WITH A SEASON TWO WTF

Jenny Beavan has spoken about that jacket and she’s officially a fashion hero
Beavan demonstrated grade-A badassery at the 2016 Oscars by accepting her award for Mad Max: Fury Road wearing a custom leather biker jacket. There might have been some raised eyebrows at the unconventional Oscars outfit, but it was all part of her fashion philosophy, the one we plan on reciting every day. She didn’t even give two shits when a bunch of old dudes didn’t clap as she strode down the aisle.

I cannot really say that Master of None is a masterpiece, but I can say it moves me. Makes me smile, makes me cry. It embodies the struggles, the issues and opportunities of my generation. It is one of the few (if not the only) series I see my reflection in, and this makes it something so very precious.
