This is the UK Human Rights Act; this is the stuff that matters. These are the very basic things one can expect.
Our new government want to abolish it. As in they have actually said they want to repeal it.
If this happens we will have no rights, and no one can help us because it is the government which is doing it. Why would they want to do it? Well it gives them the right to discriminate based on gender, sexuality, race, class or hair colour if they want to. This would give them a legal basis on which to establish a capitalist dictatorship if they want to.
People aren’t being made aware and they need to be aware. This is not just ‘dull politics’ this is actually terrifying. If you are in the UK, join the fightback, if you aren’t then stay aware of what is happening here, please, because we might need you to help us.
this terrifies me
under EU law it will have to be replaced with something very similar (I’m not sure how similar) so this isn’t as totally scary as it sounds
Of course if we pull out of the EU (and there will be a referendum, it was a Tory manifesto promise), they can replace it with the All Poor People Must Die Act and nobody will be able to stop them.
David Cameron, our re-elected darling prime minister, spent his youth as a member of the “Bullingdon Club” at Oxford University. For those of you who don’t know, it is an unofficial boy’s only club whose activities consisted of destroying private properties and paying its owners in cash on the spot for the damage for funsies. They also held events in which women would be paid to dress like foxes for the boys to “hunt”. Mayor of London, and conservative MP, Boris Johnson was also in the club.
and if you think i’m lying, this is the 1987 Bullingdon Club photo
(David Cameron is second from the left top row and Boris Johnson is third on the right sat down)
imagine being so white and so rich that laws stopped mattering decades ago
Let’s not forget that Chancellor of the Exchequer and newly appointed First Minister of State, George Osborne, was also a member of the Bullingdon Club. Here he is on the far left…
The only context in which George Osborne will ever be described as being on the left.
Also, thing that’s worth remembering: the initiation for the Bullingdon club involves finding a homeless person and setting fire to a fifty pound note in front of them.
literally Boris Johnson, conservative MP and Mayor of London, is a MESS
he as a lovechild and has had multiple affairs
racist as HELL, uses “piccaninny” and the phrase “watermelon smile” in reference to Black people in his articles
possibly the most classist elitist snob in the whole world (thinks rich people are heroes for paying taxes)
thinks the government should focus only on helping people with high IQs
had a literal tantrum for being made to pay his taxes
called his annual salary of £250,000 for his weekly column in the Daily Telegraph ‘chicken feed’ despite the fact that the majority of the UK’s population can’t even dream of earning that much
publicly said women only go to university to get married
does nOT KNOW how much a pint of MILK costs although he plays an integral role in creating laws addressing the cost of living
admitted to doing drugs in his youth, primarily cannabis and cocaine, said weed was “jolly nice” but won’t lift a finger to relax drug laws that disproportionately incriminate minority youths in the UK for drugs charges
gave his approval to “Illegal Immigrant Go Home” vans positioned around areas in London with large minority populations which created unnecessary tension and caused minorities to be harassed.
despite all this - no BECAUSE of all this, he’s revered by the UK public as a friendly loveable buffoon with silly hair. female politicians can’t even look angry in photos without being torn apart by the media as high-strung and too emotional for public office. yet here we have an actually ridiculous politician, who only got his position bc he’s David Cameron’s old Bullingdon buddy, who is problematic and gross in every way and people lap it up as part of his charm.
what makes this all the more infuriating is that boris johnson gets away with all of this without a single scratch to his popularity or reputation whilst Ed Miliband (leader of the Tories main opponent the Labour Party) is scorned and ripped apart by the Conservative owned media for eating a sandwich.
but nah, keep telling me democracy prevailed on the 8th.
#ToriesOutNow
#ukpol#this is a great post#can i just say that something completely baffled me though#he has a lovechild?#multiple affairs?#how the fuck?#who looks at boris johnson and says#‘ah yeah i’ve always wanted to fuck a man that looks like a confused albino orangutan’#?????????????
This may sound incredibly stupid but what exactly is austerity?
Not stupid in the slightest, especially if you aren’t from the UK.
Austerity is the fancy name given to David Cameron’s policy of cutting funding from the most vulnerable in British society in an attempt to fix the deficit that the rich created.
Austerity entails cutting disability benefits, job seeker’s allowance, child benefits, pensions and mental health funding amongst many other things. It also includes a new bizarre set of requirements for you to even be considered for these now greatly reduces benefits. For example, if the government decides you aren’t looking hard enough for a job your benefits will be cut entirely, people have starved to death because of this.
Austerity accompanies the Bedroom Tax in which people with “too many” bedrooms in their council houses have to pay extra tax, this has made disabled people homeless.
Another aspect of austerity is the closing down of GP offices and the implementation of a scandalous ‘10 minute’ limit to doctor’s appointments. Whereby if you go over 10 minutes when talking to your doctor they have to cut you off and send you on your way, even if you were about to tell them something that could help them diagnose and treat you for something serious. Doctor’s have protested this legislation and have said that the new system is failing patients.
Austerity also includes selling council houses cheaply to tenants so that the government doesn’t have to pay for their upkeep, this sounds good in practice (my own mother benefitted from this scheme by buying our council house) but in the longterm it has created a shortage of council houses. Leaving many in hostels or on the street. (My best friend had to declare herself homeless to be given a council house for her and her baby and it included a compulsory week stay at a hostel, my heavily pregnant best friend asked me to stay with her and trust me you would rather be on the street than in a government hostel in the UK. The sheets were blood and shit stained, there were used needles on the floor, the plumbing did not work. Those places are inhumane.) Having to put people in this kind temporary housing is costing taxpayers £2bn a year.
As a result of Austerity thousands of rape crisis shelters, women’s shelters, homeless shelters and community areas have been closed down. 3.5 million children now live below the poverty line and an expected 1 million people will join those currently relying on food banks to survive. The Royal Mail was sold to a private company but the Conservatives botched it so it ended up costing taxpayers 1 billion pounds. Some areas of the NHS have also been sold leaving people in poor care in hospitals and depriving some of treatment.
Meanwhile, the middle and upper middle classes continue to get tax breaks, banker’s continue receiving their bonuses and tax evasion is left ignored despite it being one of the largest strains to the public purse.
+When David Cameron was first elected in 2010, there were 44 foodbanks operating the UK. There are now 421. +A friend of a friend is a social worker. She recently mentioned to me that because of funding cuts to local councils, some are having to redefine their legal definition of child abuse because they can’t afford to investigate, prosecute and remove children from all abusive situations. This government is literally forcing local councils to leave children in danger because saving them isn’t cost-effective.

Thank god tumblr’s stopping being so American-centric. Please support us, just overnight we’re being confronted with some nasty shit. I wasn’t too worried about them to begin with despite the homing troubles I’ve been having since I was a kid but now the threat of the privatisation of the NHS will kill us, it’s literally a homicide with he amount of people who rely on medical support and otherwise cannot afford to pay for it. I know you guys in America deal with this stuff already but please listen to us, we are not ready for this. Britain hasn’t faced this much danger since Thatcher. Not to mention homelessness and child poverty is predicted to rise by at least 30%.
Also people have been beaten by police during this protest. There was a livestream earlier, you can probably google to find the footage. There was a young woman being pulled to the ground, hit in the face and then restrained. The police were plucking random people from the crowd and taking them down. My father told me when he attended a festival in Windsor during Thatcher’s reign the police grabbed and beat children. Our rights to protest are being revoked please support us. As for myself, my words aren’t hollow - I’m joining my local Green or Labour party and am standing for election as an equality officer in the Student’s Union. Steps need to be taken to preserve a future for us as the young people of Britain, and the best people to take action is ourselves. There’s been a moving and beautiful amount of international support for the American protests, please hold our hands too. Because we’re fucking scared. Myself, my friends, my dad, all his laddish pub-going friends are all scared.
I honestly hoped things wouldn’t be so bad. That maybe the Conservatives could have changed and started working for the people, but they are not helping us. Everything that they have pledged will damage everyone under a middle class status. I live on the poverty line. I’m a nineteen year old transgender and I don’t want to be homeless again. And I don’t want to die because I can’t pay for keeping my lungs working.
There’s also talk of the removal of the Human Rights Act which includes laws against inhumane treatment and slavery.
I’m glad that this has hit off like this.
But yes, you heard it - they plan on scrapping the HUMAN RIGHTS ACT
This is the Act that gives us
Right to life
Freedom from torture
Right to liberty and security
Freedom from slavery
Right to a fair trial
No punishmenet without law
Respect for private life
Protection from discrimination
Right to education
Amongst other rights which you can find here
basically, we’re screwed.
Yo we're fucked
The Ant Man movies starts. Ant Man is tiny. He is on screen for five seconds. Natasha steps on Ant Man. The camera pans up to Black Widow, ready for battle. It was a Black Widow movie all along.
And I am bored to death with it. Bored to death with this place, bored to death with my life, bored to death with myself.
