Bug my character about their past! Ask them about the things you wonder about! Give them scenarios to get their brain going! Today is all about bringing out the growth hiding within my character.
kitsunenoire:
Amidst the startled cries of the attendees, another sound could be heard, albeit barely. A scratching, shuffling sound, as though several people were moving around in the darkness.
It was so black that it was completely impossible to see anything. Kit reached for Kineta’s hand in the dark, intending to ask her to light the room, but her hand hit nothing where Kineta had been before the lights went out. Instead, she felt her other hand be taken by somebody, who quietly whispered for her to not move and stay quiet, as they did the same beside her.

If the elderly man's own outrage hadn't been proof enough, the outcries of the other trainers in the building certainly did; people dislike being stolen from.
As it happened, the theives were not the sort of people who cared, and so when the various trainers started sending out their Pokémon in an attempt to battle the would-be Pokénappers, several of the less experienced among them found that their other Poké Balls were now in the hands of the various Salandit that were scattered around the floor, suggesting that the reason there were so many was simply because they were able to learn Thief to swipe the objects from them completely unnoticed.
Punched anyone recently?
Is that really what I’m going to be known for?
I’m not in the habit of attacking people for no reason. I do what I have to do to protect myself and my family, and nothing more.
With that said, I don’t really want to get into who I’ve had to fight.
None of you are helping!
We don’t eat our parents, dumbass.
...I guess I don’t actually remember anything about my parents. I suppose it’s entirely possible I did eat them, however unlikely.
For most people, an hour of continuous losses would be a deterrent. At the very least they may leave and do more training elsewhere.
Despite losing repeatedly for far beyond that, Kineta never seemed to stop trying, and she and her trio of Pokémon seemed to continue enjoying themselves.
“Are you sure you’re okay with this?” Kit asked the girl more than once, but each time she was met with an insistence of yes, and after the third time asking, she gave up repeating it again. Clearly Kineta wasn’t much of a battler, but she seemed o be having fun regardless, for now.
In another part of the building, meanwhile, Forest was doing a significantly better job than her. Unlike Kineta, Forest was actually winning most of her battles, and accumulating quite the prize as a result. With a little luck, she'd be free of her 'debt' to the Carvanhas very shortly, and would be able to head back around to Shalour.
She wasn't too fond of the audience that seemed to be gathering around her, however. If nothing else, it was incredibly distracting, but more than that it was making her feel uncomfortable. She could feel the negative emotions around her; they were what her type thrived on, after all. Annoyance, jealousy, they weren't too unusual to feel after a successful battle. Some people were more capable of taking a loss well than others. But among those common feelings, there was something else. It was vague, hard to pinpoint exactly what the emotion was; she only recognized the way those other emotions felt from experience and association, while this one was a feeling she hadn't felt for an incredibly long time.
The strangeness of the emotion was distracting, for sure. Enough that her next battle resulted in a loss, forcing her to hand over a fraction of the winnings she had gathered so far; not an outcome that she was too upset about, as it caused some of her crowd to dissipate, allowing her a little respite from the discomfort their emotions were causing her. Maybe now she would have some time to herself again.
This doesn’t even make sense anymore. My punishment for turning around and coming back early, which I did so I could find another way around and keep progressing, is to go back the way I came and take part in some weird battle event for rich people. Which I’m not.
Why am I even allowed here. This is stupid. We’re going to get set back so far if I lose.
What's so bad about caves, Forest?
Bad experience. Too many weird assholes hang out in caves. And even the big ones feel claustrophobic. I’m not into the idea of any place where the ceiling could collapse and crush me at any time.
I’m being punished for coming back to Lumiose already, this is bullshit. I didn’t even give up. I just... decided to take a different route. One that doesn’t involve a cave.
...another cave. Nobody told me the way to Shalour from here was a cave.
Welp I’ve done all I can, time to go back to Lumiose.
Cyllage is a pretty nice place. For like ten minutes. Any longer than that an’ it’s a pretty boring place. Anyway, badge earned, I’m moving on. Next looks like... Shalour. Seems like a long hike there.
You've definitely had some... interesting experiences since starting your journey. Well, how about before then? What's something really weird that happened to you earlier in life?
Well there was that time I was kidnapped and experimented on for seven years because of my DNA, that was pretty fuckin’ weird.
Uh… I guess meeting and forming the Carvanhas was pretty weird, in retrospect. But I’m guessin’ you mean more minor stuff?
Have I mentioned Azur before on here? He’s a Carvanha too. Few years ago he couldn’t keep his pants above his ankles to save his life. Seemed like he’d tear them every time he went outside one way or another. So one day he decides he’s got this smart idea, buys a pair of super-strong dungarees from a back alley store with the little money he has, and throws them on over his wrecked pants.
So you’re probably wondering what this has to do with me specifically. Well kid decides since he’s got these super denim pants now he can do anything without danger. So he climbs trees and tries to catch a Fletchling with his bare hands, ‘cause he figures if he can catch a Pokémon he can battle for money.
Only the Fletchling gets away as he lunges for it, and he snaps the branch, falls down, yells out ‘cause he thinks he’s done for, only he doesn’t hit the ground. He just slides down the rest of the branch on the straps and he’s totally fucking stuck there.
Guess who had to climb up there, in front of pretty much the entire population of Lumiose City, and get him down? And when he does land on the ground? Pants tear immediately. So now he’s in front of the biggest crowd you ever saw with no pants because he’s an idiot.
And that’s why Azur isn’t allowed to wear anything with straps anymore.
Note to self; Don’t go into weird caves with weird people anymore. At least I got a decent amount of money from it all...
“If it wasn’t for your Helioptile guiding me, I wouldn’t have found you at all. You definitely got off lucky, this time.”
"Helioptile?" Forest asked, confused. "I don't have a Helioptile...?" "Well then, you seem to have accidentally found quite the friend." she replied, indicating the little golden lizard that sat between them. "This little one went out of her way to make sure that you were found. She lit up the path directly to you."
She looked down at the Pokémon, who looked back up at her with concern in her eyes. Had something so small really done that? Moreover; had a wild Pokémon really done such a thing out of the goodness of its heart? "I see... then thank you." she quitely said to the Pokémon, which responded with a happy chirp and instantly shot up her arm, onto her shoulder.
There was no telling how long she had been out. The first thing she was aware of was the sensation of being moved around. Then, just as before, nothing.
Something touched her face. It was sudden, cold. And then again.
Steadily, her body began to feel again. Her eyes opened, still feeling heavy, as she tried to take in her surroundings. "Hail, trainer." a feminine voice said to her, softly. "Or, well, rain actually, but that's probably preferable."
Rain? Of course, that made sense. Only, it didn't. Because the last she could remember, she was in a cave. And now- She jolted upright, eyes wide.
“Sleep Powder, Tangrowth.” he said, cutting her off before she had even gotten the words out.
Hearing a rustling sound from behind her, Forest turned to see the great mass of vines that was apparently the man's Pokémon, which had somehow evaded her sight until now, hidden in the unlit corners of the chamber. It had already begun to release green spores into the air around her, and the instant a single one touched her she could feel her body growing heavier.
"Sh-shit-" she managed, as her legs gave way, leaving her stomach-down on the rocky ground.
"I'm almost certain you're nothing more than a rookie trainer passing through, worried you just came across the new Team Flare." the man said, crouching over her, as her eyes began to shut on their own. "I assure you, you haven't. I do hope that's enough for you."
Before she was even able to register another word, Forest blacked out.
“Is something wrong, miss?” he asked her, noticing her hesitation. “I assure you, taking them is no inconvenience to me.”
"Why?" "Hm? What is it you're asking, exactly?" "Why isn't it an inconvenience?" she said, taking a subtle step backwards. "You're going to all this trouble. But what is it exactly you're looking for, if not fossils?"
