Henry Fox has a side hustle at his job as a host in an upscale restaurant. He loves setting up romantic moments for guests who want a little something extra for their night out to dinner. A bouquet of flowers and a bottle of champagne for the couple celebrating their 50th anniversary? Easy. A special table with candles and a dessert with a surprise for the woman about to propose? Child’s play. But despite playing Cupid for the restaurant’s guests, Henry has never been on the receiving end of a grand romantic gesture. So imagine his surprised delight when anonymous gifts begin appearing just for him.

WIP Wednesday

Oooooof, the universe is really on one with me lately. I don't want to get into it right now because I reallllllly don't feel like weeping over my keyboard, but here's a snippet of 'living' that I've been tinkering on. Because when IRL is shit, at least I can guarantee a happy ending for my boys...

“Your roots are starting to come in, Hen.”

Henry felt his sister’s fingers in his hair. After the hell of the past month, he craved the creature comfort of her attention. He shifted from his side onto his back, his head still in her lap, and said, “I know. It’s getting too long as well. I’ve been meaning to go to a hairdresser but…”

He let the sentence trail off. Let the memories of the soap opera his life had been for the past few weeks fill the silence. Bea nodded in understanding and tugged a swooping forelock, replying, “Remember when I first got out of rehab? I looked like that Rochester fellow’s mad wife in the attic.”

Henry chuckled. This was one of the many things he loved about his sister: her capacity to understand. For others, a stint in rehab would have been something to hide. Finish the program, get the chip, and move on with one’s life. Not Bea. She used it in her music or to get a laugh out of a sibling who needed it.

They made quite the pair. The addict sister and the mad brother. No wonder Phillip did his best to be as aggressively normal as possible. Bea pushed the hair back from his forehead and said, “I could give you a trim if you like?”

“And end up with some bastardized mullet?” Henry scoffed. “No, thank you. I remember the last time I let you near my head with shears and a trimmer.”

“That wasn’t my fault! Pez frightened me!”

“I looked ready to do a tour in the Army. The answer is no!”

If I could only share one (1) thing that I have (re)learned about creative writing this year, it's that sometimes it's easy to get into a rut with writing because you're too fixated on one specific idea/version of a story. There might be another way to tell it that works even better – if you just give yourself permission to fuck around with it a bit and remember how fun the "finding out" can be in the creative process.
