Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018)

pacific rim uprising was a Bad movie but its kinda crazy that newt was textually in love with hermann in it. what do you mean you had a comphet fake-out followed by "im sorry hermann, theyre in my head". this coming from the same guys that killed off mako mori in a fucking helicopter crash?

when pacific rim is brought up around me in a "the jaegars are so epic" way and i have to pretend to be Super Normal about raleigh having felt his brother die mid-drift and having to pull himself and their jaegar singlehandedly back to shore and losing all faith in the world and the existing system and mako losing her family to the kaiju and so she grows up training to be a jaegar pilot even though the man who protected and raised her doesn't want to lose her to the kaiju along with the countless others he sent to their deaths and raleigh and mako having that instant connection (and it's debatable whether they want to kiss crazy styles but there's no time to unpack bc they need to save humanity first) and nothing can break it not pentecost or the asshole australian pilot who won't give them a break or even the fucker aliens that live behind the breach and also the two eccentric (gay) scientists who constantly bicker and butt heads coming to an enthusiastic understanding that they have to drift together with a kaiju brain because if geiszler is gonna do it again who but gottlieb is crazy enough to do it with him and the overall act of drifting itself being so intimate and personal because This is the person that knows Everything about you and now you're gonna go out there and murder some kaijus but you're doing it together because you Need each other and and and

you wanna know one of the reasons why i love newt and hermann so goddamn much? they’re not likable. they are genuinely dislikable people.

most of the characters seem like they tolerate newt, and hermann because he’s the more socially adept of the two. and like… i get it. newt’s hyperactive and arrogant and has no filter. hermann’s awkward and arrogant and pissy. they’re not people you’d wanna hang out with!! this might be an unpopular opinion, but i truly think they are each other’s only friends, and most of the time they don’t even act like it!

and that is SO FUCKING REFRESHING.

where else do we get to have heroes with such noticeable flaws? where else do we get people who are so undeniably lovable but aren’t put on a pedestal? their flaws aren’t the typical Hero Flaws of caring too much or extreme loyalty or recklessness. they’re not palatable in the way most protagonists are. it’s an extreme contrast from the characters shown in most mainstream movies and it’s fucking fantastic

#thisss like they are canonically Not Fun To Be Around #separately they might be generally palatable (moreso hermann bc he obviously cares more abt his perception than newt does)#but even separate or together they are Annoyinggg and i love that for them i rlly do #not smth you see in characters the audience is meant to root for and be part of the main cast
