anyway hi! my name's kili (yes like the dwarf in the hobbit) and uh here's some stuff about me that's not in my blog description

I like comics! I like them a lot. I'm actually a way bigger marvel fan than dc fan (just because dc's continuity mess is a lot for my stickler-for-cohesiveness brain to handle) but I do love a good dc comic it has to be said.

I also like superheroes! one of these first two points may be a side effect of the other.

I read comics! I know a lot of marvel and dc fans don't (which is fine) but yeah I do so generally speaking I tend to be talking about those more. also it's been my special interest for like nineplus years so I know a lot. sorry in advance.

I am a proud member of the "charles xavier sucks" club. the man should not be trusted with anyone's children. ever. or adults. or even like plants. just put him in a little cardboard box with a plastic cactus. he'll be fine.

I really enjoy storytelling, both doing it myself and analyzing how other people do it. the second thing is much easier to do than the first but I try my best! (I'm black_banners_raised on ao3, by the way)

if you're ever confused by my tone please ask! I am sometimes confusing and I don't mind clarifying.

I also really really like music and I probably won't post about it much but I have playlists for a lot of stories/characters and I love thinking about sound and lyrics and all of that. it's just another form of storytelling! and it's such a fun form too.

Wait what did you like about the Brand New Day Jean?

great question! I did a much longer ramble earlier to some friends so here's the tl;dr:

I love a lot of the original x-men stuff, but like a lot of early comics, its women have SHITTY WRITING. jean is The GirlTM. not that there is a ton of sensible and sober characterization in early x-men comics but it's especially bad with jean. everyone is in love with her. and then it just keeps going. there's this wonderful panel from the (modern!) dennis hopeless run where she's like "none of these little boys can decide whether I should be a damsel in distress, sex kitten, house keeper, or mascot!" and that's so correct! and even as the x-men expand and other women are added and do Not fall into the pitfall, jean stays The GirlTM. she gets madonna/whored with Madelyne and later Emma, she becomes a team mom and then a real mom when she's not being the dead kind of girlfriend you name a school after, a whole bunch of things. obviously some writers are better than others but that's the gist. and so this is the version of jean that gets put into the screen adaptations! I like x-men evolution's jean more than most (she actively pushes against the perfect golden student image) but like. in the movies she's hot and then she gets the phoenix force and dies.

and then time displaced x-men! and by no means do I want to credit the overhaul of jean's personality solely to brian michael bendis because a lot of foundations were laid in earlier comics. but he did a lot. his jean is nosy and stubborn. she loves her friends but she sometimes feels alienated as the only girl. she's determined and a little pragmatic and kind of ferocious. all this personality that was really only on display in her worst moments or because of the phoenix force just becomes. character. she gets a lot more focus. and then she gets her own run and it slaps! she has such a personality and so much love and drive and curiosity and ugh it makes past stuff with jean feel kinda flat.

anyway. I think this is where a lot of the movie is pulling from. I've seen a lot of people say this is pre-xavier jean which I definitely think is true, jean learned a lot of her principles and higher ideals and all that from him for sure. but I think also it's a result of her being on her own. we get to see all of her! and bnd's jean is determined, stubborn, curious, and turns all the best parts of the perfect jean grey of the past into a terrifying antagonist. she loves her sister (so much that she's wreaking absolute havoc to find her). she's understanding and empathetic (which she uses to manipulate and threaten peter). she believes in justice (and if it's not happening she is going to make it happen). when she comes into her power completely, she just locks everyone in her radius the fuck down. she'll kill a bitch. and I think it's really key that she's the bad guy! because this is a look into what makes jean grey jean grey. love and understanding and curiosity, for sure, but also an absolutely lethal combination of impossible power and unstoppable drive. I'm actually really happy that they chose to use her as the mcu's villain AND as the bad guy (especially in a "the real bad guys were the cops we helped along the way" kind of story) because that got us a version of jean that we haven't really seen onscreen before and it is a version that I love deeply and I don't care that her backstory isn't 1:1. this isn't like them turning joaquin torres from a daca-er to an air force intel officer. it made her More accurate and not less. which I'm realizing might have been your actual question. um thanks for coming to my ted talk

go up to any comics fan and ask them which writers house they would mail pipe bombs to and they’ll list of at the bare minimum 5 different people. ask them their favorite character and you’ll be greeted with an answer followed by why every comic ever featuring that character has been literally the worst and they refuse to read it again. truly i don’t think there’s another group of people so invested in something that they truly despise to such a great degree.
